Hi Folks

Sorry to post this here, but I havent posted on the site for years. And despite "logging in" it wont let me "create a thread" on either the "vintage" or "contempory" sections ???

I have an unrefurbed Hoover Senior U652A which I got some time ago. It has worked great until recently. The belt is now slipping off its beater bar and leaving horrid black marks on my nice carpet. I have repositioned it time after time but it still slips off. I have even replaced it with what I believe to be the correct new belt, but it still slips off at the beater bar end.

Can anyone help me find what is going wrong please ??

Thanks
Derek

Possible

lesinutah's profile picture
The bearings in the brush rslip.
oll or bearings behind the fan could cause this.
If you put the belt on and the brush roll is catching it would cause the belt to slip.
If you have any a height adjustment it could be an issue.
I hope this helps.

then the belt is too large. you need a 49258 or 44783 AG commercial belt.

there is no reason a belt should slip off when the brushroll has a groove for the belt. even if you put it on backwards and the brushroll is turning the wrong way.

Well

lesinutah's profile picture
Okay
The bearings on the brush roll go out. That makes the brush roll stop spinning. If the brush roll stops and the belt in the grooves would slip. It would slip or possibly cut the belt.
It doesn't matter if the belt has grooves. If you have a geared belt and bearings go out on the brush roll it would slip.
If you got it wet it would slip too.
If you have say a wagon. If the wheels stop spinning what happens.

Try this, flip the machine over, remove the metal guard plate(s),the belt and roller.Switch the machine on and observe the fan pulley.Does it wobble or vibrate excessively? does the pulley appear to be worn down where the belt rides. With the machine unplugged, pull up and down on the fan pulley. Is there a lot of play? Bearings? Check the roller ends for hair, string etc. does the roller spin easily or hard to spin at all.You can remove the ends on most rollers to clean and grease or replace the bearings if needed.Your belt should require a bit of a tug when stretching it on to the pulley.Stay away from generic belts, use genuine "sticky" fresh rubber belts in the sizes recommended above by bnsd60m9200. Have you tried running it on it's back to observe anything unusual?Does the belt come off right away or after you have been vacuuming for a while? Also try spinning the roller in place with the belt removed, does it wobble, might be warped.

youve clearly never owned a convertible. when bearings seize on a convertible, belts break, they dont slip off. ive serviced dozens of these machines.

the way a convertible brushroll is, its impossible for the belt to slip off if its the right size. only worn out belts or too big of belts might do this.

I have a Hoover 913 that pre dates the convertible. Its bearings were shot. It didn't snap the belt it came with. It left black marks in the center.
I did install a new correct belt and it snapped.
I'm not saying you are wrong but the belt slips or stops moving first. It doesn't always break but they slip or stop before they break.
I'm not saying your wrong at all.
My Hoover has went through 3 belts. The original cracked and I chuckled it. The second bearings gone snapped and its current belt and it runs great.
My sanitaire I think I went through 5 belts in two days. I replaced the brush roll, fan bearings, and correct belts. I snapped two more pretty quick. I've learned height adjustment while turned off is key to my sanitaire.
I know Hoover all metal snaps easily. There's many reasons it could be I gave a few.
I didn't think of your idea until you posted it.
I'm throwing out ideas it could be. Trying to help him out. New correct belts on the machines and bearings spinning freely are key. If anything is off the belts snap.

Hi Folks

Wow...thanks for all the replies !

I am afraid I am not techy minded, and the discusssion and differences of opinion as to the cause of the belt slipping out of its groove at the beater bar end ONLY, are all a little confusing.

Its late here in the UK now, (too late to make any noise). But I will try taking the belt off and seeing if there is any noise vibration or play in the motor pulley tomorrow and report back.

Note that the belt ONLY comes off at the beater bar end and not at the motor pulley end.

Will get back to you all

Cheers

Ok

lesinutah's profile picture
Just by hand with the machine off and the vacuum housing face up. Spin the belt or spin the brush roll exactly like it would if the vacuum was turned on.
If you tell us what happens when you do this reply with your response.

Hi Les

OK. Well I cant switch it on right now as its midnight here. But I took the belt off and tugged and pushed at the motor pulley and it seems tight and ok..no free play there at all.

However, I have found a MUCH smaller belt which I have fitted to it (with herculean force I might add !). So I will see if that works in the morning, although I suspect its too small and will snap off. The problem is that I have several different vac belts and none of them have the model number applicable written on them !

The beater bar rotates ok by hand with any belt attached.

I will update you tomorrow when I switch it on.

Thanks Les

Derek

Derek,

Try flipping it over and watch while it runs. See if you can hear any rubbing or see anything that doesn't look right. Let it run a couple minutes, the belt may come off, maybe not. If you see it coming off, hopefully you can pin point the cause. I wouldn't use a belt that is too tight or small for long as it can be rough on the bearings. I'd get the proper belt using the numbers listed a few replies back. Once you know you have the right belt on you can rule that out as cause for slipping off.Good luck and cheers! Billy

Hi Billy, Les and Others

Well, as stated I fitted a belt last night which on the face of it seemed ridiculously small for a Senior U652A. With some considerable effort I managed to fit it but it is very tight.

Today I tried the hoover and actually hoovered normally with it on some test carpet, and it worked fine. But I will take your advice and try to source (from the UK ), the absolute defintive CORRECT Hoover Genuine Belt. That is the only way I am going to know if the belt is the correct model. Any others I have tried fitting to it, are just guess work.

Can anyone UK BASED point me to where I can source the correct belt from in the UK please ?

Thanks again guys !

Derek

Typed it in and it brought these numbers up.
Package of (2) Hoover 38528027 belts, which is now part number 38528040.
I looked on Amazon UK has belts but I'm not sure.

Before you go putting belts in, just spin the brushroll by hand while it's in the machine. If it turns freely, you're fine, if it's stiff, either oil the bearings or replace them. The old ones used a retaining clip whereas the new ones do not require it.

Caution using overly tight belts, strains your bearings

Hi Again Guys

Well the beater bar rotates freely by hand when not attached to the belt, so thats positive anyway !

If anyone in the UK can lead me to the correct Hoover brand belts on Amazon thats great. I wont be sending to the USA for them.

Cheers Again Everyone

Hi Derek,

You're up against the Marketing Depts.
Sharp practice rules.
They want you to buy a new vac for the want of a replacement belt.

They change the width and length for every belt, on every device they ever manufactured.
Belt lengths are never publicised.
Part Numbers are rewritten for the same item.
Model Nos. and Names differ by Country.
'Genuine' means genuine spare. Not genuine 'Hoover'.
And so the game continues...

I've just scrolled through 115 pages of Hoover Model Numbers for you, at Ransom Spares. Still not reached the end! (apt name - Ransom).

BTW: VAX don't issue spares at all for some new carpet-washers. Not even belts. This was supposed to have been outlawed practice, but they sidestep this by replacing the whole machine under warranty, because there are no spares. It can never be repaired. Then they discontinue the entire model as soon as regulations allow, and never use the same design elements again. Way to go VAX!

--------
You can call Hoover Spares direct:

"If you cannot find the part you are looking for or wish to speak to our spares team directly, please call 0333 0062961"
--------

Good luck.

Idea

lesinutah's profile picture
I had a belt on my old ram charger that got cut. It was too tight or too loose I don't remember. I got a shoelace wrapped it where the belt went made is nice and tight. I took the shoelace into parts store said I need a water belt as long as this shoelace. He tried to ask more questions. I said I just want the belt that is that long. It worked perfectly for it.
I have alot of belts slot. I'll either tonight or tommorow put them on and see what size of the belt.
Before I finish my post I'm pretty sure the belt Mr. Hemb mentioned is the correct belt.
Les
