Even though DDs are not my thing, it is extremely kind of you, and people like you, who draw our attention to things we'd otherwise never see.
There might be some prized machine, etc, that we'll find and add to our collections.
Very kind, indeed.

Thank you for the kind words! I actually got kind of nervous afterwards cause I didnt want others who were trying to get it to feel I had spread the word about it, these are a much more uncommon vac. To see two at once on eBay of all places was wild!!!

Is this a rare vacuum?

I didn’t think this was rare, but maybe so. I cleaned for a guy for a year or two who had one of these. I got real tired of how heavy it was and the brush roll motor was kinda weak, it would stop easily and didn’t spin very fast on the carpet. It was pretty quiet though. I finally decided to bring my Electrolux Silverado instead. He also ended up with a Kirby as his Mother passed away and he took her Kirby and brought it to her house. I don’t remember using the Kirby more than a few times as I also felt it was hard to push and exhausted me as his whole house was carpet so I stuck with using my Silverado.

I can’t remember if the MVP had a cordwinder on his.

Jon

Hey Jon!!!

These are without a doubt one of Dirt Devil's most illusive machines. These only ever appear once in a blue moon on sites like eBay. Other sites like Craigslist have them much more often. Many people including myself have been after these for quite some time. Though I kind of lost interest in it afte awhile. Looking much more now for a decent 90's Broom vac. These were probably Dirt Devil's best cleaning upright of all of them going by things I have heard. The one the guy had probably had seen better days. I think they started selling them in 96 and 97 and probably ended aroun 99 or 00. Does anyone here know what year they stopped selling them? I want to say 1999 but IDK.

I had no idea they were collectible. We see old Dirt Devils in the Kirby dealer's trade-in piles all the time. I'm going to have to stop throwing them away and start selling them on eBay. Who knew? I remember them when they were new, I remember fixing them, and then I remember people trading in the broken ones (handle release lever problems). We don't rebuild Dirt Devils for sale, so I would have never thought people would actually pay good money for them. Thanks for letting me know they are valuable.

No prob! The 90s Dirt Devils are getting harder to find! Seeing them go up is a real treat, especially an Ultra MVP which is an all around good cleaner.

Those Dirt Devils!

For the money, I thought the first models, dirt devil and deluxe were really a good buy. They were. I got a brand new Ultra MVP freshly thrown away because the handle release snapped, and the owners were moving, didn't want to deal with it. So I retrieve it and it's great. I didn't replace the handle release in due time and now can't get it. It is a heavy vacuum cleaner to lean against the wall! Thanks for posting this. I hope anyone who buys will check to see if the handle release is working.

I actually have 2 of these, one came from a very good collector friend which it isn’t in the best of shape but it’s restorable, the other is damn near new. The “new” one was bought be a lady who used it for about a week to clean her deceased fathers house. I paid about $50 for it and find it to be a fantastic vacuum cleaner. As a matter of fact these machines are pretty comparable to a Kirby at the base due to the 2” diameter hose and the airflow being measured at around 125 CFM (someone on here “tested” it). The motor for the nozzle is a typical PN motor by GS electric. Now someone mentioned the brushroll motor being weak... these are by no means a weak PN motor at all, the reason for the brush constantly stopping is because of the belts continuously stretching due to the powerful suction of the vacuum. Well, that and dirt devil belts aren’t known for being the most durable belts. In my experience they actually tend to stretch quicker than many others. There are a few flaws on these machines, Brittle plastic being one thing and the other being the handle release. There is also a diverter flap “under the hood” so when the handle is raised it diverts the suction to the hose and if it has debris lodged in it, it can break with the force of putting the handle up. Another weakness is hose suction, as powerful as the machine is at the base there are a lot of areas that leak on it and also the wire reinforced stretch hose cuts a lot off as well. Otherwise it is a phenomenal vacuum and if it weren’t so brittle and a few slight changes were made, it would be a very successful cleaner.

Could've sworn I saw this in an office YEARS ago with what was either a Hoover Futura or the similar looking Dimension II. Though it could've also been the EXTREMELY rare Swivel Glide Vision in bright red, which I always thought had a similar handle shape to the Ultra MVP. This was back in like 2001.

Yeah a lot of people collect Dirt Devil and within the past 5+ years people have been wanting them more and more. I used to have the base model MVP but the bag door was broken and would not latch. I have a bunch of Dirt Devil's hand vacs but none of their uprights. I just have a rare teal variant of one of their bagless vacs.

No vacuum should ever be thrown away. My neighbor just threw out a Bissell Cleanview that is a $100 vacuum. The brushroll looked like a shag carpet and the belt snapped, that was all that was wrong with it.

I have quite a few dirt devil machines. I’ll gather them tomorrow and snap a pic of what I have, I’ll even throw the royals in a pic too considering that dirt devil was made by Royal. I’m sure there are a few members here that have quite a few dirt devils too. I do have a brand new used once at a mini meet, Vision featherlite that was a childhood machine from 2001 and also have a soft bag direct air “lite plus” that was a childhood machine as well. The soft spot for dirt devils lies with the soft bag elite style machines, although loud, they were powerful deep cleaners that actually performed very well and as flimsy feeling as they were, they were pretty durable.

For a 20 year old Dirt Devil. Hell Yes! I've got lots of 'devils' that we just tossed into the storage shed years ago. They are all laying on top of hoovers and other junk. I'll be sure to dig them out this weekend, take pics, and put them up on eBay. Who knew they were so valuable?

I think it's not unimportant to note the fact that these machines are so rare because they were not the best build quality out of the starting gate. Most were in the garbage dumps by the early 2000's but now they've taken on a cult following because of the rarity. I think the same can be said (to a lesser degree) for the Regina Housekeeper.

And, yes, collectable, much like those "Regina Housekeepers". They were popular, disappeared. Son IF there are any around, it seems to be a big deal.

Well, we all like what we like, collect what we like. And... should not be irritating about the others.

Oh, what a person collects does not irritate me in the least. We're all here for a common goal - collecting vacuum cleaners. I myself have a small collection of Hoover Elites which are also somewhat rare nowadays because they were used and sometimes abused and many were put at the curb with broken fans and fan housings. Do I think they were the same build quality as the venerable Convertible, no, do I think they're better quality than the current crop of TTI Hoovers? Without a doubt.

I agree.... with all of that

gottahaveahoove's profile picture
And, if I worried about what others say about Me.... I'd have been institutionalized by now. Some want to "punch him in the face"... been called everything under the sun. "Mother...." was another. YEP !!!!!!!!!!
Sadly, the TTI vacs will never reflect that glorious history which began in N Canton.
But, I remember Dick pike, himself, telling me that they never 'planned' to 'replace Convertible'. But, when the Elites came out, they couldn't make them fast enough.
We've seen people abuse vacs. Even the good metal ones (many survived). So, there's no chance the "plastic" stuff could endure.................

Yes it is! The bagless on the end was NIB, and all but 2 (excluding the NIB vision) have been serviced or rebuilt with some NOS parts. The 2 awaiting service are the plus (soft bag) and lite plus (black bag). I did have a can Vac, both power team and straight suction, also the pro series maroon version and I found them to be lousy machines as they lost suction rather fast, they were loud and somewhat flimsy in construction. I have also had the MVP deluxe as well in 7, 10 and 12 amp and found those to be excellent performers for what they were in a clean air design. They seemed to hold power rather well, were durable, quiet, and managed to last quite a long time and let’s not forget that LARGE bag capacity! I could only wish they would make them like this again. At least these machines were well worth their value and you definitely got what you paid for.

If anyone wants to sell some of their dirt devils, like a lite, broom vac, ultra mvp, mvp, upright, deluxe, classic, alternate hand vac models, and any variants of those models, I'm happy to buy. If you want to list them on ebay, I'm still happy to buy. Just PLEASE let people place offers, list a buy it now price, and use the one up from the cheapest shipping, these vacs are delicate. I need an absolute empire of dirt devils (laugh). Grandmas hand vac handy parts mailer inspired this obsession...

Thanks, Rett

And back on the topic of the thread, I will try my best to win the Ultra MVP on eBay, and if I do, I'll send pictures and videos on here so you guys know what it might be like with the cord rewinder. I am a bit confused on where the VCCC is, the issues, and what costs are. Also where any vacuum conventions are just to show vacs and talk all day about them... Can somebody point me in the right direction? I'm just looking to show some of my recent finds whenever the next event is, and to possibly try others' vacuums.

Why don't you bring a few of them to the Vacuum Cleaner Collectors Convention in September. I'm sure there are many younger members who would want to see them. The Theme this year is Central Vacs (won't Greg Palmer be impressed) but as you know we have three days of festivities. A couple of your pristine Dirt Devils would be welcome (as you always are - you have a standing invitation). Will be great seeing you again, and a new photo op. Loved our last one. That's a nice collection. Until today I didn't know so many soft bag models existed.I have six models and only two of those I see in your collection. It would be great to see a list of the entire DD line from the first. Do you have a favorite in the full size upright category? I still like my 7amp red and 10amp black deluxe, both still work after almost 30 years. The model that Kloveland is sporting above lists for 169.95 in a '90-'91 Best Merchandise catalog, which puts it in their upper mid price range. Thanks for sharing!

Soooooo the Ultra Mvp has risen to over $100, and well over that. It is at $145 for the vacuum price, and $45 for shipping no matter where you are, so it's going to be a $200 vacuum pretty soon! I'm fine with it because I just found a broom vac with the original box! Never seen one! Never used!

Impressive collection of Dirt Devils!
And, some beautiful Maytags back there too!
I don't collect DDs, but I picked this one up because it was something you don't see every day.
There was a discussion in a different thread about how stores cut the cords off of some vacuums to use them for display. This one came that way right from the manufacturer. Made specifically for display. A little Vac & Dust. I guess they included everything that the functional version would have. It appears to have a bag in it, and there's a microfiber pad for the floor nozzle.
I've never taken it out of the box and assembled it. I just bought it as a novelty.

Barry

Retail stores when you get returns the manufacturer pays for retailer to dispose of the product. This means they have to cut the cord. It was called 1506 at Walgreens. The number is referring to the number for the balance sheet of the business.
They don't want defective items in circulation of the public.

I haven't seen this thread in the top for a while, so figured it was done. The Broom Vac is on offerup, and I'm about to have the seller ship it to me pretty soon. Les, I would definetley buy your MVP, but I just got the older Upright Deluxe, and just ran out of room in the collection.

Thanks, Garrett

Glad you have had luck on OfferUp. I deleted my account there. I probably tried to buy 20 vacuums off of there in a 2 month period in 2018 and each time I did, the seller expected me to pick it up (even when im 7 states away) when they had the listing stated they would ship it, or never shipped the order at all.

I have a newer version of the 3n1 you linked I bought from Amazon on a dirt cheap sale to use to clean up after my parrot and small touch ups. I probably got it 10?
Years ago when I was living in the old long term rental. It started smelling hot so I stopped using it and then all the cordless vacs started getting cheap so I got one. After a while I found it again and cleaned it out and it still worked after all so I used it around the birds area because it has way better suction than my early cordless. It's mostly retired now but I just fired it up and sucked up some bird garbage with it.
I have a Shark Ion duo clean x2 cordless I got that works really well as a touch up machine and can pick up all the bigger crumbs he throws around but that Dirt Devil is still great and cheap and they still sell updated versions. As long as you have a plug close by it does a nice job.

Its not my dirt devil. The brush roll wouldn't engage. If it's a bypass vacuum it means the clutch is an issue.
I figured it probably had issues I could remedy.

That machine just takes a belt. It doesn’t have a crazy set up (luckily)

I wasn't sure. I worked at Walgreens and in 2009 every store got a 1030z. In 2016 they bought all the stores the orange hard plastic royal. I imagine it's probably pretty similar to that model.
I did get the 1030z and fixed it up. I sold it to a member on here.
I wasn't super impressed with the royal hard plastic version.

Maybe I can buy that one. I hope the price doesn't get too bad on it. I have the original instructions, vacuum raffle sheets, and the sticker that goes on the bag door that says "Ultra Reach, Ultra Power, Ultra Satisfaction, Ultra Versatility, Ultra Quiet, Ultra Filtration, and Ultra Power Path". The power path is a term used by dirt devil that is only for the ultra mvp, and is the "dirt passage that is 4 times bigger than other leading brands". Very cool to have the instructions!

Thanks, Garrett
