I work for a national auto parts retailer, and recently the vacuum at our store crapped out (made in China).  So, yesterday I took my Hoover Model 68 along to vacuum the rugs we have in front of of our counter area, and in the entry way.  My co-worker laughed when he saw it, and remarked "does that ancient thing even work"?

After I finished doing the rugs, I took the hose with the nozzle attachment and sucked up a bunch of dust bunnies under the edge of the counter, and under some of the display racks.

Needless to say, he was more than impressed with the final results.

P.S., the original converter and hose were gifted to me by Robert Seger & Fred Stachnik.  wink

Great job! I bet it got the rugs cleaner than they have been in years. True beater bar agitation can't be replaced.

Sounds like when you took your Hoover to work, you also took your co-worker to school! It's amazing how thoroughly today's vacuum cleaner industry has gotten the general public to forget what real vacuum cleaners were like.

After I was finished he commented that he really liked how the converter slides in at the back of the machine.  And, he was impressed by the weight of it as well.  I got a blank stare from him when I told him that the vacuum and all of the attachments were US made.

P.S., he also told me he liked the color, a lot.

It doesn't hurt

to expose them to a little class every now and then I suppose, and they didn't have to wear earplugs either!

That's a great story. Its funny how people think an old vacuum is a bad vacuum.
The rugs probably have never been so clean.
It would be great for a business to use. I wouldn't dare use it in commercial setting as they would abuse it.
I tell people I have 50-100 year old vacuums. I show them a video clip of it and they are stupified.

National Take-your-vacuum-to-work day should be a thing.

Marilyn Monroe had a brand new Hoover 68 when she passed away. She had just recently purchased it for her new home on Helena Drive. Wonder if any of RFK's back hair was in it? LOL

I love the 68. So glad you were able to show it to a coworker and have him appreciate it for what it is, a fine piece of engineering.

I have heard the story and the rumor from the guru that she had a gay housekeeper and a gay gardener who were a couple. But on the down low. Edger and Eldin. Eldin used to drive Marilyn around but he would talk incessantly and bore her to death. Stuck up, and not particularly attractive, Eldin was always jealous of Edger Edger was a particularly irritating old queen. Every time she opened her mouth the chiffon fell out. She was very pulled, dried out, and drawn. While Marilyn’s new Hoover was listed on the evidence list filed with the LAPD, it disappeared from the house. I understand that her “help” fought over it, beating each other to death with a Hoover handle and the other one had an agitator Sad. North Canton will never be the same.

I see you tool set was the 'original', with the separate converter.
Proudly made in The U.S.A.

I took the Model 68 to work again this past Sunday, and the guy who normally deals with our professional customers worked up front because of staffing needs.  He said seeing that vacuum was a trip down memory lane for him.  It reminded him of the machine his parents had when he was a kid.  He loved watching and hearing it.

It's like "comfort food" for the ears

You're exposing people to a wonderful, AMERICAN made product.
They'll want a regular playdate.
I used to bring various vacs to a friend for play dates. But, I've learned, the hard way, that indeed, I HAVE been discussed, dissed, etc to others. Sadly, I learned. So, no play dates.
But, that's a great cleaner. It was the last Convertible to have the handle match the hood, etc. Model 69 would bring the standard, white handles.
