Since on another post about yellowing plastic I decided to use my Aerus Lux Guardian Ultra so while vacuuming I noticed quite a bit of air coming out of the cord winder. Now I know this isn't one of the newer ones because of the gray cord but isn't this supposed to a sealed system? The pleated hepa filter is still clean along with the charcoal disk inside it, but I did notice when I ran it without it installed air was still coming out. Thank you for any help.

It wouldn’t be the first time for air leakage.

I used to notice air leakage by the cord on my 1205, Renaissance and Epic 9000 canisters.

No, there are no seals on the cordwinders.
No sealants, rubber, and the plastic enclosures have lots of gaps on the edges.

I still love them terribly.

If I’m hearing you right, this is the one Guardian model that takes the C bags? Correct? I think there is supposed to be a seal between the motor exhaust and the exhaust port, that could be bad. Also, if it has the automatic control system to stop the cleaner upon the bag filling with dirt, the system circulates it’s own air throughout various parts of the vacuum including through the cordwinder so that could be it too.

Yes it takes "C" bags

And I took it apart because I thought the same thing that the seal could be off or wasn't seated right but it isn't, the entire motor is sealed good. The back part that covers the cord winder is clean and doesn't have carbon dust on it either just like the rest of the inside. I had never noticed it before and the only reason I did is because I was cleaning out my car, had no shoes on & felt air on my feets, put my hand by the cord opening and was surprised.

It might be the air that is used by the automatic shutoff system is all I can think of. I know it pulls in some air to monitor the suction before and after the bag...that air has to be exhausted somewhere. On the older models such as 1205-Ultralux series I know there is an air tube connected to the system that connects and goes right into the closed cordwinder assembly! Never quite understood why this is...but tracking the tube, it clearly goes to the automatic control system.

I have a Lux Legacy...I’ll check mine and see if I get that air at the cordwinder too. I had a Lux Classic which doesn’t have the automatic control system but my Brother has it now across the country, otherwise I would be able to compare to see if it doesn’t occur on the Classic and does on the Legacy, then that would tell me that it’s likely from the automatic control monitoring system for sure. These models are closest to yours as they use the same plastic body.

Which leads me to ask...does your indeed have the automatic control system. I’ve often wondered since I don’t see an adjustment knob for it on that model? Never seen one in person, just on line in pictures. Is it under a cover somewhere? I always liked that particular version of the Guardian, because it is the only one that uses the C bags and has a sleek design to it.

I took it apart again

And found out the black case has only one tab holding it instead of all three. I taped it back together and tried it, that was the problem. Now when I get more time I will see if I can get a new case or just find a better way to keep things tight in there.

Now there is a clear tube which is connected to a red tub that connects to a round piece on the motherboard. There are three lights on it and the Aerus sign that lights up, well it used to and also I did something to it because now the middle temp light stays on all the time when it's running even though there is nothing blocking anything. Oh well it works and the closest Aerus dealer is 2hrs away with a time change. Again if I get extra time I might go and see what's wrong with it but it's not a top priority right now.

Interesting

A different model indeed. Perhaps the automatic control system in this one is not mechanical with the diaphragm sensing device but rather electronic. Me...I prefer the mechanicals, circuit boards get pricey to fix and when something goes awry all sorts of weird things can start to happen. I’ve had this problem with fridges and at this point when something goes wrong, usually I just replace the board and everything works right again, but the appliance repair people want to replace the circuit board and all the devices that aren’t working correctly too, figuring it could be one or the other. Unfortunately the boards aren’t cheap. I try to stay away from stuff that has circuit boards as much as possible.

I wonder why the black case wasn’t properly fastened. I assume you got the machine second hand and perhaps someone who didn’t know what they were doing tinkered with it and didn’t put it back together again right.

Yes it was owned by someone else

and was taken care of but I think it was dropped @ some point and where the Aerus emblem is there's a gash in there so that no longer lights up but everything else works good, the suction is strong with a 10.0 w/out power nozzle, 11.5 amp motor w/power nozzle. Funny how each model has different amperage, my Ultralux Classic has 9 amps w/out & 11 amps with, and the Ultralux 2000 has 7.5 amps w/out & 9.5 amps with. I would have thought the Classic had more suction then the 2000 but not really and it has a newer OEM hose.

I remember when I bought a brand new Ultralux Classic in 1993 from the Electrolux dealer.

I paid about $600 for it.  When I was buying I asked about the horse power, which at that time was the way most vacuums were rated, especially at Sears.  I was used to the idea of 4.1 h.p. which is what I had on my 1983  top of the line Kenmore canister.

I asked the sales person why the vacuum seemed so under powered compared to the Kenmore and he quickly stated "it simply doesn't need anymore than that".  That was  a reasonable response.   There is a point of too little and also Too much suction.

The Kenmore was nice but the motor really was a bit too much.  It had so much suction that it would suck in the top of the cleaner.  Also, if the suction is causing bag breaks or blowing around excess exhaust and dust; it's kind of contradictory to the vacuums job.

The Ultralux

has such a nice "purr" when it's running. It's not loud like the newer ones are after this model, it reminds me of the 1205 when I'd hear it being used on my neighbors back porch.
