When I was younger my grandmother had a Hoover Concept One Powerdrive in beige and a yellow and green Singer Silverglide canister. When she was getting ready to move, the Self Propelled part of the Powerdrive burned out, so she had a vacuum shop disable it. After she bought her next house, she got a hunter green Hoover Elite Supreme and gave the Powerdrive to my mom. She told me at one time she had a Regina Electrikbroom but it almost caught on fire so she threw it out in the yard!
Around 2008 she sold the house and moved in with my aunt. My aunt had a black Sears Best Kenmore Whispertone canister from the early 90s and my grandma would vacuum with it sometimes but she didn't like having to pull it around. I think my aunt may still have that Kenmore, but I'm not sure. My other grandparents had quite a few too. First my grandmother had a GE swivel top canister she bought with green stamps at the grocery store she worked at. I never saw it but she still had the attachments from it. Then she replaced that in the 80s with a Rainbow D4. They also had a Montgomery Ward wet dry vac that was white and red with a metal tank. There is a picture of me using that vacuum as a kid. The hose on that ended up falling apart, so they replaced it with a Sears Craftsman Clean and Carry 2 gallon shop vac, mostly to clean the cars with. But the last few years my grandpa wasn't able to do it anymore and he passed away early this year. At one point my grandma got tired of setting up the Rainbow so she got a Bissell Pet bagless upright, and a Bissell carpet cleaner. When she had her carpets replaced with wood floors about 5 years ago, she gave us the carpet cleaner. But she still has the Bissell upright and the Rainbow. I think she mostly uses the Rainbow since like I said she doesn't have carpet anymore. She also used to have a 80s Regina Electrikbroom 3 speed in an orange color, that her sister gave her. When I stayed at her house, I'd use it to clean the kitchen floor after dinner. That burned up and she replaced it with a 2000s Eureka stick vac of some kind but not sure what became of that. She also had a metal Eureka F&G of some kind she had gotten from a neighbor because she wanted something quick to vacuum the carpets with, but I think that was replaced with the Bissell. Now for my parents. My mom's first vacuum was a Kenmore canister Powermate from the 70s in yellow and green. I never saw it, since she had replaced it with an newer Kenmore canister in 1982. Later we also had a mid 1980s Kenmore Powermate canister that a relative was getting rid of and gave us. Then for a while she used the Hoover Concept One from my grandma but then she sold that, and got rid of the other Kenmores and bought a new hunter green Kenmore Whispertone canister around 2000. She still has that, but around 2005 she got a Kenmore bagless Quick Clean upright with cord winder. That lasted about 10 years but somehow she cracked it so got rid of it. Then she got a Hoover Windtunnel 2 Whole House Rewind around 2016. I think at one time she also had a Hoover Quik Broom in blue, the bagged early 80s version like I have, but I don't recall ever seeing it. | ||

Now this is a post I can get behind... Both of my grandmothers had Hoover Constellation #82’s. Just a strange coincidence, I suppose, because one grandmother had a Eureka Model M and the other grandmother had a Singer 2 speed. None of it makes any sense now. | ||

About my family and vacuums. 
My great grandma and great grandpa. They moved into their house in 1954 with an Electrolux XXX. In 1959 they got a Kirby 519. Those were their two machines for a while. In the early or mid 60s, they got a Eureka Model 2010. So those three machines were their vacuums. In the late 60s, the Electrolux was traded in for a Dual Sanitronic 80. In the early 70s, they got a Classic 1CR. The Eureka & 519 were stored in their separate triple garage (and wouldn't be uncovered until 2014 when I took them home). The D80 & 1CR was their two vacuums until the early 90s. They sold the Kirbys and got a Hoover Elite 6.0 and a Dirt Devil Plus Upright. {My great grandpa passed in 1999}. Around 2000 or 2001 my great grandma got two used Kirby Heritage II Legends. The Hoover was used until around 2005 then stored away. The dirt devil was stored around 2003. She used the two Kirby Legends until the very end. She got Alzheimer's, was later sent to a nursing home. Then passed away in 2018. The two Kirby's are still there and I hope I can get those. I really hope so because I can have something my great grandma had. Another thing to remember her by.

When my mom got married in 1954, she got a Bell Tower vacuum similiar to the one in the pic (courtesy of Doug Smith's vac site). She then got a Filter Queen a couple years later and gave the Bell Tower to her mom. In the mid to late 60s my mom bought her mom a Hoover Constellation and a Hoover Electric broom. My mom bought a Regina V480 (pic against from Doug Smith's website) around 1970 and then another Filter Queen with power nozzle around 1972. She used that same vacuum until she died in 2001. My sister has that FQ now.

 ~ The earliest vacuum I remember in our household was an Electrolux E-Automatic that my parents got a few months before I was born. My mom told me they got a Royal tank machine as a wedding present when they were married (1947) but she didn't remember anything about it except that it was gray.
In 1962 they got an Electrolux B-7 polisher. Until then, Mama did the floors of the entire (fairly large two-story) house with the E-A's polisher attachment. I remember when the salesman came to the house. He had a big white station wagon that was stuffed full of various Electroluxes and paraphernalia. He demonstrated the Model G but my parents didn't buy it. Instead, the man took their E-A to fix up and convinced them on the B-7.
In 1968 they traded in the E-A for a bronze Model G which they had for 12-15 years.
I moved to California in 1980. When I came home for my first visit they had a dark green Hoover canister vacuum that, to me, was ugly. And as loud as a jet plane.
They had that Hoover for a while, then around 2000 I arranged to get them an Electrolux Model L and a later Hoover upright (like the Convertible but all plastic). They used the Electrolux downstairs and the Hoover upstairs.
The last machine they had was the Model L which had gotten a bad motor. I had the L repaired for them as a surprise one Christmas. They didn't know I was going to be home. My oldest brother went to pick me up at the airport under the pretext of going to the store for batteries. He had the Model L with him.
I rang the doorbell and when Daddy answered I said, "Hello, your Friendly Electrolux Man here with your fixed-up vacuum cleaner!" My astonished dad started tearing up and when Mama saw me she burst into happy tears.
They had the Model L until they sold their home and moved to a retirement community. The sister-in-law of my second oldest brother (R.I.P.) now has the Model L and the B-7 polisher that she keeps downstairs in the family room. Her main upstairs cleaner is a red Miele canister that she is crazy about. | ||

 Premier Upright in the early 50's, then a door to door salesman sold my mom a tank style Electro Hygiene which lasted a very long time. When my mom and dad built a new house she bought a Westinghouse canister as they had hard wood floors and area rugs. When mom put in shag carpet, I bought her a new Hoover Mode 70 upright from a hardware store. After that whenever I bought myself a new vacuum, my mom got my old one (still like brand new).......

My mom’s mother - Grandma Molly - had a lovely brown/copper Lewyt tub vac that her brothers brought to Montreal for her directly from Brooklyn, NY. Montreal is only a day’s drive north from NYC, and we used to go a lot when I was a toddler in the 1960’s. Whenever I visited Grandma Molly, she would let me play with the tools. The Lewyt had a nice little tool box, and the two aluminum wands were always connected and standing in the closet. I remember the carpet nozzle had a teeny little button on its front and I was always mystified as to what it actually did!!!
My father’s mother - Grandma Rose - had a little compact Canadian made Regina Sanitron canister that looked like half an egg sitting on its side. These were made by Switson Industries in Welland, Ontario. Brown vinyl hose, brown and cream coloured canister body, cream coloured metal carpet nozzle. All other attachments were grey which really bothered me as they really did not match the ensemble. But all the attachments stored on a “Eureka-like” cardboard tool caddy - including the cool felt “shoe” that attached to the bottom of the carpet nozzle to dust delicate polished floors! | ||

My grandparents on my mother's side had a Hoover Convertible 1010. I used to push it all around the living room starting at the age of 3. Something happened to the snap vinyl bag and it got replaced with a vinyl zipper bag that was beige with a floral print. In the garage they had a G.E. swivel top canister (AVC-815) to vacuum out my grandfather's '75 Dodge DartSport. They must've brought it with them from New York (they lived in Florida). I was so sad when they put it at the curb, but my grandmother said the motor went kaput.
My grandmother on my father's side had a Kirby 560 (which I still have). She bought it new and according to my father traded in a G.E. Airflo tank to buy it. I have fond memories of using that Kirby as a child as well. | ||

When I was little, my parents had a Lewyt canister with a charcoal gray tank and a bubblegum pink motor housing. At some point, that was supplemented with a Bissell Sweepmaster electric broom and eventually replaced by a tan and lime green Hoover Convertible.
My dad's parents had an Electrolux, either an XXX or LX, that was in service until my grandfather wnt into assisted living, My maternal grandmother had a yellow Hoover Constellation when I was little. Not sure after that, other than she had the Bissell Sweepmaster at her apartment later on. | ||

 My grandparents had a Kenmore Duo Power that I remember using to vacuum their house when I was a kid. From looking at a post here on Sears Kenmore it appears it was a model 3997 from 1979. They would give me five dollars to vacuum their house which to a kid was plenty. Of course I would have done it free.
The first vacuum I remember in our own house was a green Hoover Convertible that I hated! The only reason for not liking it was our neighbors had a Kirby Classic Omega and for some reason young impressionable me fell in love with it. I kept after my mom to upgrade to a Kirby and finally I remember us visiting a used vacuum store and her allowing me to pick out what I wanted. I'm sure the people working there got a good laugh out of the parents letting their kid pick out what he wanted. That's how we ended up with the Classic III that I never liked as much as the neighbor's Omega. We only had it for a few years before they bought a new Heritage II and when I was in high school that was replaced with a G4. Today they have a Sentria. | ||

My paternal grandmother had a Kirby Legend 2, a blue Hoover Concept, a green Hoover Powermax, a Dirt Devil Swivel Glide, Dirt Devil Deluxe Upright and lastly a Hoover Windtunnel bagless.
My maternal grandmother had a 1987 Kenmore Upright Self-Propelled, a Regina Housekeeper, and lastly two Panasonic uprights. I remember my aunt having a Kirby Tradition and my other aunt having a Hoover Concept Two in beige/orange with the handvac built in. That's about the extent of my vacuum memories with family. | ||

When I was born in 1981, the vacuum my parents had was the Kirby Classic III that started my fascination with all things Kirby and all things vacuum cleaners. My Dad bought the cleaner -- to the chagrin of my Mom -- on November 7, 1978. My Mom hated it because of the fact it had a shake-out bag, and that you had to take the nozzle off the machine if you wanted to change to using the hose, and back.
My maternal grandparents (Mom's parents), meanwhile, had a Montgomery Ward (Eureka) Multi-Beat (Vibra-Groomer) upright, that they purchased used, which also dates to about 1978. My paternal grandparents (Dad's parents), also had a Kirby Classic III. Theirs was a year older (1977), and at the time they were in Utah. They bought it in 1987 (just before moving to the St. Johns neighborhood in North Portland, OR) from the original owner who had struggled to pay his debts. That Classic III is the one presently in my collection. In 1994, my Mom finally gave up her Kirby and bought a Hoover Elite U4617-930. This lasted for over 20 years, before it gave up the ghost in the form of dry-sounding motor bearings. Since then, I have been doing all of the vacuuming in my house. ~Ben

The memories…I could go on but I’ll start with this…
Parents: • 1972 – Hoover 1030 Convertible and Hoover 2017 Slim Line Canister. I was not born yet…I came in 1973, haha. • 1975 – TOL Kenmore Powermate Canister – Think it was 2599 from my Sears Catalogs. This was the vacuum was my entire childhood, I played with this vacuum all the time…got in trouble for it too! But had a long run with many hose replacements and neck repairs at the PowerMate, parents had the Sears Service Contract back in the day, so I remember my parents taking this vacuum into Sears Service for annual maintenance and those hoses did not last long, always cracked at the handle and the PowerMate neck cracked a lot, my mom was very rough with vacuums, not sure why…probably the drudgery of keeping house with 3 kids…along with me playing with the vacuum all the time, when I could… hahaha • 1987 – Hoover Concept One, don’t know the model number but it was blue with cord rewind and self-propelled mechanism and a Hoover Spirit Canister, don’t know the model number but it was orange and tan, straight suction for above floor cleaning and the stairs. My mom realized the Concept One had very poor suction and the configuration with the adapter plate to clean stairs was something she wasn’t going to do. I used to say she was spoiled with the TOL Kenmore but she’d given up on canister vacuums; unfortunately. • 1991 – Hoover Spectrum 850 Canister – Convinced them to purchase in Sears Brand Central at the time, I was primarily doing the vacuuming in the house and disliked the current set up with the Concept and Spirit. I loved this vacuum! • 1994 – Hoover Elite Supreme Hard Case with onboard tools, she didn’t like using a canister vacuum again and she had given away the Concept One to my brother. • 2002 – Hoover Windtunnel Upright, no self-propelled, it was a blue jewel color from Sears Brand Central. She liked the set up and tools, she ditched the Elite Supreme, don’t recall who she gave it away too or what happened to it. • 2006 – Bissell Powerforce Upright – don’t ask, not sure what they were thinking on this one…probably an impulse buy at WalMart/Target, don’t recall which store but I was disappointed when I went to their house and they were using this monstrosity LOL. Think they had said they wanted to try a bagless vacuum. That didn’t last, the next vacuum was purchased less than a year later. • 2007 – Hoover Windtunnel Upright, no self-propelled, it was a gray color from BJ’s Wholesale Club, they tossed the Bissell and not sure what happened to the Blue Windtunnel from 2002. • 2011 – Hoover Self-Propelled Windtunnel – another BJ’s Wholesale Club purchase, said it would be easier to use with the self-propelled feature. • 2014 – Dirt Devil Tattoo Canister and Dirt Devil Stick Vacuum – Currently still using, my dad has passed and mom is aging (72) and she finds these two lightweight vacuums easier to use. She still has the Self-Propelled Windtunnel from 2011 but doesn’t get used, too heavy and bulky for her. Maternal Grandparents: • Airway 66 Canister – Always remember this in the hall closet, my grandmother assembling it to clean, I remember it was very quiet. I know they purchased new in Queens NY when my mom was very young, maybe around 1951/1952? I’d have to ask my mom. • Hoover Convertible U4047 – My dad had bought this for her for Mother’s Day 1974. This is the vacuum I remember the most and played with. She even used to let me vacuum for her on the weekends, but she rarely used it. It was an upstairs vacuum for the area rugs and runners in the bedrooms and halls, she stuck with her Airway lol. She was so thankful for the vacuum though, she would point to it and say “kids, see that vacuum over there (was in a spare bedroom) your father bought me that” hahaha she loved my dad like he was her own son (isn’t that the way it’s supposed to be?). What I know now from vacuum collectors on here was it was a promotional model and relatively inexpensive; maybe $50.00 in 1974?? It’s the thought that counts and since she hardly ran it and stuck with the airway, happy my parents didn’t spend a ton of money for vacuum she never used. • Hoover Handivac – It was brown/beige and in their family room off the garage, it was rarely used, not sure where that came from, again she always used the airway as most of the house was hardwood and just carpet runners, so the airway I’m sure was sufficient. • That was all the vacuums I’m aware of, shows how different that generation was, they were happy with what they had, given my parents had so many vacuums over the years, my grandparents only had those 3 mentioned above along with an all metal shop-vac in the garage, don’t recall the brand but it was blue, all metal and loud! Paternal Grandparents: • All I recall seeing in there house was a GE Canister Straight suction vacuum, they died when I was really young, so never got to know them well. Godmother: • Kenmore Straight Suction Canister from the late 1960’s, don’t know the model, she had that up until 1990. • 1990 – Hoover Innovation, the soft bag pink one. She asked me to help her buy a vacuum, so I went vacuum shopping with her. She wanted an upright this time, as she installed new carpeting in her house; but I kept insisting she buy a canister! She kept saying NO…hahaha, we went to Sears Brand Central, she looked at the Convertibles and a Concept One, didn’t like those, showed her the Hoover canisters there, but she said NO…we ended up at Macy’s with a BIG sale. I showed her the Hoover Spirit Canister on sale for $199.99 but she was not budging, so we kept looking and we saw the Hoover Innovation, it was on sale for $224.99 with attachment set in the price, she liked the color, the weight, the look, etc. So she purchased that vacuum. She had that for a while until she vacuumed up a screw or bobby pin and blew the motor. She called me all upset and said we have to go vacuum shopping again. Then she bought a navy blue Hoover Caddy-Vac at Sears Brand Central, I told her if she “accidentally” sucks up a screw or bobby pin again, the same thing will happen, she didn’t listen and said she wasn’t spending a ton of money on a vacuum again. Think the Caddy-Vac was on sale for $79.99. She’s still using the Caddy-Vac today in 2020; she’s 81. Crazy! Lol Paternal Aunt (One of many Aunts; but closest to her) • Electrolux Model 1205, loved seeing this vacuum when would visit, it was the blue/turquoise model with matching turquoise power nozzle. I always thought it was odd she stored the canister by itself in a coat closet and then the hose and power nozzle were hanging on hooks in the stairwell to the finished basement off the family room stairs, there was a door you could close; but still; found it odd they pieces were separate. In the downstairs “play room” she had the separate wand with the straight suction flip-floor tool and carpet shampooer attachment. There was a shelf in the stairwell as well with the dusting brush, crevice tool and packages of filter bags. She had a split level so the shelf was under the stairs going up to the next level. 4 level split level house she had, it was very nice. • 1988, maybe 1989, don’t recall exact year but she purchased a Heavy Duty Kenmore Plus Upright from QVC. It was mostly black the vacuum, red lettering on the fabric bag and it came with grey plastic tools that connected to the top of the vacuum, not a bottom plate converter. She was telling my parents that the Electrolux wasn’t picking up and her carpets looked terrible. When this vacuum came from QVC she was amazed on how clean the carpeting was after the first use. Knowing what I know now, I’m sure it was the hose on the Electrolux that was the issue, it was a blue cloth woven hose, so I’m sure the seals were shot in the hose. A new hose would have done wonders. She let me vacuum with the Kenmore, I wasn’t that impressed as my parents had a Concept One, sort of reminded me of that but the Kenmore didn’t have self-propelled or cord rewind. The tools were much easier to use on the Kenmore and suction was a lot better on the Kenmore vs the Concept One. She held onto the Electrolux, she passed in 2008 and my cousin (her daughter) got rid of the Electrolux without asking any of the family about it…she had a no clue about quality vacuums. I would have grabbed that 1205 in a heartbeat as it was like new, my aunt was so clean and spotless, so aside from the hose needing a replacement the 1205 was in great condition. Knowing my cousin she put $5.00 on it at a yard sale. I could go on, as most can, we all have special gift when it comes to vacuums. | ||

My paternal great-grandmother, Grandmother, and my mom all had the same vac for a short time, a Kirby 514. I really wanted to restore it as kind of an heirloom, but it would basically been made of new parts. The handle catch and hook were broken, the armature was bad, seals were bad, bumper and roller were bad, wheels were shot, and the cord and bag were replacements. I took the fan, switch, fan case, head, and stator out, in case I need them for parts.
We also had a yellow Sp DAM when I was young that belonged to my paternal grandmother and then my mom, but it was thrown away when we moved. My paternal grandmother also had a turquoise Compact C9 back in the 70s, not sure what happened to it. I heard that she got a rainbow in the 80s or 90s though. My maternal grandmother had as far as I know: 70s: Electrikbroom, Eureka F&G, Hoover Convertible, not in that order 80s: white Kenmore canister, died when someone sucked up a sock 90s: Unknown for early 90s, Either DD Vision or Swivel Glide for late 90s, found an attachment for one in her home after she passed 2000s: DD Ultra, Caddy vac (Inherited them) 2010s very cheap black DD upright, and green Bissell quicksteamer (have them too) Counting Shop vacs, the only one that has been owned more than me or parents was my paternal grandfather's flat top 80s Craftsman. | ||

Paternal grandmother:
The only vacuum I ever knew her to have was an Electrolux. The only thing I remember about it was that it had the runners or whatever they're called. As a child, I always thought it was odd that it didn't have wheels. When she passed away, most of her other grandchildren descended on her apartment like vultures. I never saw the Electrolux again. I don't even know which one grabbed it, or what ever became of it. Maternal grandmother: The only vacuum I remember seeing at her place was a Regina Electric broom. Maybe that's all she used. Parents: The first one I remember was a Hoover Portable in a gold color. When they got a deeper pile carpet installed, some time in the '70s, they added a light blue Eureka upright. I don't know the model, but I remember the Dial A Nap, and no headlight. At some point, probably still in the '70s, they got a Eureka canister; orange, with a power nozzle. The Eureka was replaced by their first Electrolux, and they owned a few different ones over the years. The sales rep used to talk them into upgrading every couple/few years. The last one they bought was an Aerus Lux Legacy. The extremely light blue, almost white, with blue trim. Mom still has that one today, although she's not able to do her own housecleaning any more. I caught my appreciation for Electrolux/Aerus from Mom. Except, she wasn't crazy, like myself. She was able to own one at a time. I now have, I believe five, at last count. I know. Several members here have way more than that. I think that's great! I'd buy more, if it wouldn't get me thrown out of my home...which it would. I was really pushing it with the Aerus that I bought a few weeks ago. One more, and I'm definitely out. Barry | ||

BrianNC, were you on here before? I remember someone talking about their parents having a lime Convertible and Slimline and then a green Kenmore canister. IF it was you I recall you had some Kenmores, a green Convertible and Slimline and also a green SP Windtunnel. Maybe I'm thinking of someone else.
Anyway I always wanted a green Kenmore canister and I do have a lime Slimline so that's why I remember it so well. LOL | ||

Paternal Grandmother had: Air-Way 66 later replaced with a Mark II 88, (later came to me), both were straight suction. She had hardwood floors with oriental rugs and was told that beater bars or a revolving brush harmed the rugs. She had in her basement a twin motored Air-Way Chief that had been retired after she thought she was harming the rugs.
Maternal Grandmother had: Hoover 63 with all attachments. She had this until she went to a retirement center. Maternal Great-Aunt had: Hoover 634 with all attachments. She too, had this until she went to a retirement center. Paternal Great-Grandmother had: Hoover 28 with all attachments. This later came to me. Mother had: Electrolux 30, 60, AE, AF, G, Hospital G, 1205, a Kirby Dual 80 and a GE electric carpet sweeper. The Luxes all had power nozzles. In later years there was a Panasonic canister and at least one Oreck. My parents had two homes and the older machines always went to the second home. | ||

Maternal grandmother had a Electrolux 1205. She broke the PN1 and used the upholstery nozzle to clean her house (all carpet) which to me seemed rather silly. When I was about six she purchased a used Kirby classic Omega. I do most of the vacuuming for them now.
Maternal great grandmother had the red U4387 plastic based Hoover convertible. Her sister who lives in Overland Park, KS had the U4003 and the 69. Maternal grandfather and his wife had a Kirby classic III which my step grandmother purchased new. Paternal grandparents had both a Hoover convertible (butterscotch color, ranger style hood, non headlight model) which they gave me. They kept their Eureka Vanguard after their new home was built. They now own an Oreck XL 21 and an Electrolux model L which I gave them for their basement. My mother had a Hoover convertible that she received as a wedding gift (Fawn color with dark and light brown stripes on the bag, had a headlight) When the bag became disconnected in a move. My mother and I went to Sears and bought a blue high performance model. This was around 1990 or 91. I had a pretty big succession of vacuum cleaners after that. | ||

My grandparents had all passed before I was born, so I only know what my mother owned and my two aunts (dad's sisters).
My mother was married for ten years before they got me. When she first got married, she and my father went to Sears (like everyone else in the early 50's) and bought an 'on sale' round Kenmore canister that used 5011 bags and had the top opening hatch to change the disposable bag. In '58, my parents had a friend who got a job selling Compact, and he sold one to my parents. It was a C-4 with the hassock, polishaire, and magic disc. Right before I came along, my mother and father bought a model D Rainbow. The Rainbow was the one I remember being so in love with. I learned to read from the instruction manual. The Compact stayed in its hassock in the living room and really didn't get used. The Kenmore was already the 'basement' vacuum when I came along. I did play with it a lot down there, keeping myself busy for hours using the attachments, cleaning the furnace filter, vacuuming the garage floor, etc. One of my father's sisters was married to a lawyer. They built their house in '57 and bought a new Electrolux Automatic F for the cleaning lady (Miss Thorberg) to use. It replaced a model 12 Electrolux. She had her AF until she passed away. She kept it in the box, which is where it is right now, but with me. My other aunt lived with us until I was six. When she bought her condo, she bought the bottom of the line Sunbeam - It was blue with a single fan Lamb motor. She had that until she passed away. I didn't care for it, and didn't keep it when she died. My parents have both passed, and yes, I do still have the Compact and the Rainbow. The Kenmore I have is the same model my mother bought but not that exact machine, which went to a church rummage sale when I was about 12 years old. | ||

Fun! Well, then, my father's family were Electrolux people, as a rule. They were from N Carolina.
An occasional Hoover would be found. On my mother's side, EVERYONE had Hoover cleaners: models 28, 67, 69 (several members had these), 70, 1070, 1076, newer plastic Convertibles, too, a few Connies, etc.... Almost everyone had and used attachments, too. I have a few of their original machines to this day. If the cleaners could talk........................... | ||

A variety, mostly Electrolux I grew up with an Electrolux XXX, my maternal grandmother had one too. Somewhere in the family there was an Electrolux salesman so.........Grandma had a XXX which came to my Mom when Grandma died. Aunt Janie had an LX, Aunt Rita had an LX too. Aunt Jo had an LX as well. When Mom's XXX wore out she bought a Kenmore with power nozzle in the 60's, that didn't last very long and she bought a Hoover Convertible. Then back to Lux. Aunt Lorraine had a Eureka Gold Crown. Aunt Bobbie had a Constellation and then a Lux 1205. A few relatives had Compacts. My paternal grandmother had a Kenmore "bomb" with the pointed nose. I was scared silly of it. When I was a toddler and they wanted me to be still, they put me on the couch with the Kenmore in front of the couch! When that died, Grandma got another Kenmore straight suction. I have most of these models/brands in my collection and use them often. They bring so many wonderful memories flooding back.

it's great that we all are so AWARE of what our families
had and used. There was an "array", right in front of us. like a vacuum buffet! I remember being in these homes when someone might say,"Would you run the vacuum cleaner for me"? SURE !
It's comforting, now, to either have the VERY MACHINES, or......... the same model. Even a few years back, when someone would die, after cleaning up OR out, I'd get a call. "There are a few things on the closed in porch at... When you have time, stop by and get them". There would be dishes, Christmas decorations... and a great Hoover Convertible, model 69. That's how I started to obtain "multiples" of a particular cleaner.They all knew to only give me the Hoovers. RARELY did a family member even own a different make. | ||

Well, as for vacuums of aunts and uncles here's what I know:
At one aunt and uncle's house, they had a tan Hoover "Sprint" Elite-style hard bagged upright with the non-stretch hose that sort of just looped over the handle instead of having a side storage. Honestly I thought it was strange she'd have that machine as the house had very little if any carpeting. At their beach house they have a central vacuum of some kind, which may be a NuTone. I don't know what she has now or what she had prior to the Hoover. My other aunt told me once what vacuums she had, when I asked once. But I now cannot remember exactly as that was 20 years ago! I think when she got married it was some kind of round metal canister, either a Sunbeam or Singer. Then I THINK she had a metal Eureka canister after that, and then in the early 90s she bought a TOL Kenmore Whispertone canister, black I think. As far as I know she still has that now, but maybe not. She was pretty proud of those vacuums to remember them all! | ||

Forgot one...
I can't believe I forgot one family vacuum in my previous post (no. 12) and it was one that I actually ended up owning. My mom's mother had a red/orange Eureka Princess with power nozzle that ended up at my parents' house after she died in 1996 and they gave it to me when they moved the following year. That machine solidified my appreciation for a canister vacuum with a power nozzle as an alternative to an upright. I wish I still had that machine.

Lets see if I remember how this goes... 
My Grandmother on my moms side only had Electrolux. She had Electrolux Model G with Power Nozzle. She then had an Ultra Lux and then a Discover III upright with attachements. She did have a Dirt Devil Hand vac with attachments. A couple of different times she tried different models. She had a Oreck, Fantom Thunder Regina Housekeeper and Bissell Cleanview. All of which she got rid of at quick as she got them.
My mom Mother In Law... She had Eureka Rotovac that looked like the canned ham. Eureka upright ESP bagged with rug dial. Singer Upright. Dirt Devil Breeze. My mom. Oh good grief where do I start. GE Swivel top gold. That was when we lived in the house before she got married. Regina Electric Broom and then the Electrolux Model G that was my Grandma's. She finally killed Grandma's model G and bought a Kenmore bottom of line canister power nozzle. Green Singer Upright vacuum, Green Regina Housekeeper. Grandma's Fantom Thunder. Baby Blue Dirt Devil Feather light. Bissell Power Force. Getting into current times. Dirt Devil Express Compact, Eureka green thing. Bissell Power Force bagged. | ||

Hey, I forgot at least one too!
My mom had two Hoover Lark stick vacuums. I don't know how she came to have two of them at the same time. I'm pretty sure she eventually gave one of them to someone. I didn't get to own either of them, although I would have liked to. I enjoyed playing with that one when I was small. She owned them at the same time as the Hoover Portable. The Lark must have been for small clean-ups where you didn't need to pull the big vacuum out. Barry | ||

Comes to the Rescue!
I found a Kirby rug renovator in their attic one day and asked about it. They had a Kirby (knowing what I do now I assume it was probably a 516) that had been lost when their house burned years earlier, so I took the rug renovator and tried to fit it on my mom's Classic III which of course wouldn't work . When my great grandmother died my grandmother inherited her Electrolux Golden J which I thought was a huge upgrade from the Kenmore. ;){kind=link}
