I just bought an Oreck XL on eBay. I have a Kirby Ultimate G Diamond Edition and a Rainbow E Series that I really love, but I've had some severe health issues the past few years, and the Kirby is just too heavy for me to carry anymore. The Rainbow is just such a pain to drag out and assemble for quick pickups, so the plan is to use the Oreck for light cleaning, and the Kirby or Rainbow for heavy deep cleaning. Does anyone else have a light vacuum you use for day to day quick pickups and other machines for deep cleaning?

The Oreck is not a bad choice....

For daily cleaning it works fine on medium to low pile carpeting. Just make sure the brush roller is in good shape, that's really the heart of the cleaning action on the Oreck. I myself like the Oreck, I was sorry the company fell victim to TTI's ownership. Newer models like the Halo, Axis and Magnesium are made very cheaply.

I already ordered

a new brushroll, belts and bags to have on hand for spares. I have low pile carpets and tile floors in my apartment, so hopefully it'll fit the bill for light in between pickups between heavy cleanings. This is what I ordered for the Oreck.

Seems like you got everything you need. The Orecks are a little on the loud side, but if you like their performance, you WILL be impressed with the XL-21. I have one and it BLOWS AWAY their classic line. It's quieter, has more suction, lower profile cleaning head and the brushroll actually glides the vacuum forward. When Oreck was around (pre-TTI) the machine had a 21 year warranty with 21 free tune-ups. Personally, I think the XL-21 was Oreck's best work.

I looked at an Oreck like that last fall. I don't know if it was the same model as yours but it did have the same black and white color scheme. They had it for $10 at a nearby Habitat ReStore. Ironically, given your story, I was looking specifically for a Kirby Heritage at the time to replace one I'd lost, so after considering the Oreck for a few minutes, I walked away from it. Of course, when I went back the next day, it was gone; however, that $10 did end up buying me a Sanitaire commercial upright a few days later. And yeah, I did eventually find that Kirby I was looking for.

Orecks

I use my friends Oreck XL upright when ever I house sit for him. He's had it close to 20 yrs. It is loud! He has a strip of carpet in the garage in front of the washer/dryer that gets vacuumed when needed. Larry has been known to venture off the rug in pursuit of a leaf or two that blew in, and that's what I've found at the front of the clot both times he's called me,ready to throw it down the canyon side. The handle is where all the dust and debris travel before blowing into the bag. The pipe can hold quite a bit of debris before you realize there's a problem and when you finally do, there's about a 3ft. backup in the pipe. Messy to clean up,. but that's all that's ever been a problem. Four belt changes and one light bulb in 20 yrs. is pretty good. Did I mention they are loud?

My grandmother had a mobile home and it had new-ish medium pile carpet. She had an Oreck XL as well and it seemed to do a pretty good job. I like the way they groom the carpet pile.

My lil sister gave us a XL and I was pleasantly surprised how well it worked on our medium pile carpet. My Mom spotted it and claimed it and I think she really likes it seeing how it's light and easy to push around.

I helped my friend clean out her uncle's home,

preparing it for a realtor. Afterwards, she GAVE me one of those.
I GAVE it to another friend. He used it as a 2nd vacuum, a partner to his Electrolux canister (vintageJ, maybe)

I have a shark freestyle navigator. Its the cordless shark you can get it for $60-$100. I received it and love it. Its good suction and it doesn't eat rugs. I'll use it a couple minutes a day and it's perfect for quick pick up. You don't have to worry about the cord. I have a sentria, sanitaire, compact and silver rainbow. Imo it would be perfect for you. If the orreck doesn't work out.
Good luck.
Les

Suggestion you may like...since you asked

A friend bought a Shark rocket stick vac some years ago, she passed away shortly after and she was renting my house at the time...Her son let me have the rocket! I grew to love it. Recommended to my Sister and she loves it too. Also gave one to my partner’s Mother and she too loves it.

They are lightweight and easy to use but are expandable and convertible via attachments that can be purchased to expand it. So, it serves the purpose of a lightweight carpet upright, a hard floor vacuum, a canister vacuum all in one, but with no canister to drag around! The motor and dust bin is right by the handle so the only thing you tote around after you is the cord. I even added a dog leash to mine to make a shoulder strap and when using the flex hose with attachments I can wear it over my shoulder as an option. It’s also convenient for cleaning the Carr’s. The power nozzle for carpets works great and is multi speed and there is even a mini power nozzle available on some models or as an accessory for heavy cleaning of furniture especially if you have pets. Consider the large range of models they have on sharkclean.com.

I love mine, and I’m a die hard Electrolux canister user.

The suction from such a little machine is great and when I got mine I thought it was just going to be a stick vac for quick clean ups but it’s so versatile and easy to use and powerful that I use it for entire house deep cleaning because it works so well.

Jon

The Oreck XL came in

and I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised. Granted, it isn't as good as my Kirby or Rainbow, but it does much better than I thought it would. It's light and convenient for quick cleanups between deep cleanings, and does do a great job grooming my medium pile carpet as well as cleaning bare floors. Even though I ordered a new brushroll for it before I received the vacuum, it really didn't need it because the one in it is still in pretty good shape. Needless to say, I think I made a pretty good choice on this vacuum.
