After restoring my turquoise Model G from collected parts, I set about to refurb. my Bronze model.

Started with the standard wiping down to see what I was looking at, I figured out it had at some point had gotten wet. I forget what the bag looked like, but my first clue was the inner bag cage. Looked like some bag particles were stuck to the cage. With a flashlight, I could see rust through the bag cage onto the steel inner body.

First, I removed and stored the beautiful brown wheels for safe keeping.

This started a journey to say the least. I pulled the front pin clip, tapped out the pin removing the front "door". Next I removed the top and bottom screw holding the front onto the body. After much coaxing, I got it. What followed was sanding and sealing. I ended up using an extra bag cage that was in better shape and did not smell.

With everything put back including a very thin bead of silicone sealing to help the existing gasket between the front and the body, I turned the vacuum on.
There was still some sort of smell.

Then, I removed the back end including the motor (which sounded wonderful to begin with). More cleaning, sanding, sealing, I finally got it back together. There was a thin coat of dried mud inside the middle section before you get to the motor.

All that is left with the motor unit is to replace the wheels and polisher her up.

Neither vacuum will have the correct hose nor wand, but I really enjoyed this project.

Thanks.

Model G odor

My experience with every model G I have run across is that they all have this distinct odor that no other model Electrolux has and it won’t go away. On mine I was thinking it was the aluminum of the back end of the main unit but now I’ve realized it is the metal they used to make the bag compartment cage as the cage is made of a different silvery metal than previous models such as the AF and E which have a different color to them. Models alongside the G such as the R and Early L had steel painted cages. The odor in my model G is strongest when I open the bag door and remove the bag telling me it must be this metal and whatever they used mixed in with it. My bag cage is very silvery almost light bluish compared to the pinkish tint on my model AF.

I’ve experienced at least 5 model G’s over the years and all of them had this weird same odor specific to only the model G so it’s got to be something that was used on this model exclusively and at this point I’m pretty sure I’ve narrowed it to the bag cage material.

One of the model G’s we had at one time was a bronze one. My Father had it stored in the basement standing on its back end and something leaked into it from a pipe above and it wouldn’t run anymore so I took some parts off and we threw it away. I can’t remember what the bronze models bag cage was made of and the coloring of it, it was may years ago, back in the late 80s that we probably deleted it.

Hey Jon,

I like your posts, keep them coming.

Thanks for your observations about the bag cage, I think I need to check that out. I stopped work temporarily working on my Bronze G in favor of another project, but plan to be back on it this coming week.

I found another cache of Elux. parts including beige straps to hole the cord to the hose of my choice. What I don't have is the cord. I hate to use a turquoise one.

I also will try my hand at sealing a woven hose with Plasticote maybe this weekend.

Take care.
