Hi there, so today I vacuumed my house with my Empower and Dynamite plus. After I got done vacuuming the floor, I decided to vacuum the stairs using my Royal Dirt Devil 500 (My Red one, not my yellow one). After I did 2 steps, I started smelling something burning from the vacuum. I immediately, unplugged it and let my dad know about it. Me and My dad are gonna inspect the motor tommorow. What could be going on with the motor?

The belt slipping is the first thing I would suspect. It is very common for hairs and stuff to build up under the belt on the motor shaft and cause it to slip. Lose threads from carpet backing also can stall the brushroll on these.
Next thing I would check is the carbon brushes, to make sure they are not excessively worn and causing arcing. Hot oily kind of smell is likely just needing some new grease on the bearing locations. These vacuums are really robust and nearly bulletproof, it's hard to kill them. The one I have has lasted over 25 years or more, but I need to find it again. I think it got mixed in with other ones I got at Goodwill. I used to have the Ultra with the hose on the side but my dog ripped apart the cord into confetti and destroyed the hose on it when he was a puppy. |
