I was poking around in my workshop today and I came across my Model R Electrolux. I hadn't used it in a while so I brought it upstairs and gave it a whirl around the apartment. It's a lovely machine; nearly as quiet as the Model G.

My Model R isn't in mint condition -- it is obviously well used. There's a small dent in one side and a few scratches and scuffs here and there. And the electric cord for the power nozzle is missing the attaching cuff at the handle end of the hose. But I like it just fine, since I recall seeing quite a few of them back in the day.

The last photo shows the Model R and the turquoise Model L together.

Nice Model R

Interesting the box calls it the “Special” Model R. I’ve never seen a box from an S which seems to have been the predecessor to the model R and the R the predecessor to the L.

I remember the ads for the E and the box from Mom’s L all saying “the world’s lightest weight heavy duty vacuum cleaner”. A now proven true statement since these machines are still around shows they are heavy duty.

My Aunt had, and may still have a model R with a PN2. I never did get to use it though.

I notice the models (AF, R, L) with the added on optional air flow through cordwinders all benefit from this style of cordwinder seeming to act as a “muffler” too making the machines so quiet.

Does your Model R have a cloth bag or the paper ones? Apparently at that time, both were options. Our model S has the cloth bag but the bag cover has the gasket for the paper bags, but at don’t think we’ve ever used paper bags in it.

I hope Aerus still sells the power switches, they tend to wear out.

Charles, have you also noticed the difference in early combination rug and floor tools? The ones through the AF had a different airflow channel design on the rug side. I suspect the later design, which is still in use today by Aerus, was an improvement for better suction across the full length of the tool. Our S had the new design. I have one with the old design which came with my AF.

I don't know the reason for that -- the Model R box is different than the Model S box (see below).

It has paper bags. I have two Model Ss, and they both came with cloth bags but I don't use those.

The improved rug-side of the combination floor tool was made with the later Model F -- the one with the donut cord reel, bumpers on the front cover and the first Electrolux power nozzle. However, I've also seen two versions of the Model S tool, one early-style and one late-style. I've also seen two versions of the Model S hose -- early style with chevron patterons like the LX, E and E-A in powder blue with light gray weaving, and one in the same color combination but with pairs of light gray stripes.

Interesting....I would love to also see full pictures of your model S’s including the hoses! If you feel like digging them out! While so,e people don’t like them because they have no cord halo...I f8md the small compact size of the machine quite unique for an Electrolux and wrapping the cord around the unit on the back end just behind the cord clip and before the switch is always the way we did it with ours. I love the stainless steel ring on the back end...protects the back from paint wear when standing or storing it on its end. Sorry though to divert from the model R subject!

I think I did have one occasion when my Aunt used her R while I was there cleaning up after a big family gathering and I remember it being very quiet. She did not have the cord winder on hers.

Perhaps the S stood for “special”

Seeing the box now makes me think this is why they called it the s for special.
