I visited collector Fred Nelson in Rancho Mirage, California last week. We had a very fine time catching up and talking about vacuum cleaners.

He gave me quite a few beautiful machines, including the near-mint Electrolux Model L seen here. (In order to preserve the perfect original hose, I'll use the white hose in the last photo when not using the power nozzle.)

He also gave me Electrolux Models R, S, Thrift, E-A, F and Silverado; a Lewyt Big-Wheel (blue model), and Hoover Models 28 and 700 (both complete with attachments and cartons).

I was thrilled to have these incredibly fine machines, as well as enjoying Fred's gracious hospitality.

Charles and I go back over 20 years to my beginnings as a collector. I had plenty of machines before but never kept more than a few. He started off my collection with the Lewyt Big Wheels (with the rare hose hanger to match the machine and toolbox!) when I still lived in LA. So, it’s fitting as I downsize the collection to size appropriate for my new digs that that machine go back to him. He was the webmaster of the VCCC website that was the predecessor to this one and was instrumental in the transition to the new site and me being webmaster. We had a blast visiting and having one last go-through of the storage unit to make sure I wasn’t letting any treasures go. Glad those machines are going to a good home and to someone who will appreciate them. The rest (detritus of over 20 years of collecting (hoses, cords, parts, etc.)) is getting hauled away Monday and I will finally be rid of the storage unit. So, thanks again Charles. BTW Charles likes to take pictures and he took a few but I appreciate the fact that he didn’t post any pictures of me per my request. I will return the favor by not posting a picture of him enjoying my spa in the backyard.  cool

A beautiful model L

That’s a beautiful condition model L. So nice to see some that have been well preserved and will continue to be to live on in history for some time. And nice you all had a great visit. Looks like It has the rare early blue hose handle with the first version of the automatic wire connection which seemed to be scrapped (until redeveloped for the Golden Jubilee) and went with the telescopic power nozzle wand but interestingly enough this one doesn’t have the telescopic wand I see which facilitated the female end of the automatic power nozzle wire connection. I know those telescopic wands weren’t metal wand reinforced in the upper plastic section so we’re delicate. I remember my Grandmother having one with her L but it was set up with the combination rug and floor tool and she had the newer version set up for the power nozzle. She traded Electrolux’s frequently so may have been leftover from her 1205 when she replaced it with the Golden Jubilee. Seems she upgraded every time a new model came out from my recollection. I think the salesman did a good job of always convincing her she should replace her older of her two machines when a new one came out.

Compactelectra: If you come across a pigtail electric hose in rubber that is ok for Electrolux Model AF, G,L ‘s since you mention you have a lot of hoses you are getting rid of among the other stuff, I’d gladly pay you for it and the shipping. I really would like to complete my beautiful rarely used model G and I have an L shaped lighted Ultralux era power nozzle I would like to use with it. Even if the handle end is no good, I have plenty of those in good shape to replace that end, I just mostly need the main hose with the pigtail end and would prefer the full electric hose as opposed to the non electric hose with external wires which I currently have which is cumbersome and annoying to connect and use with the power nozzle wand.

Have a great day! Jon

Sorry, all the Lux hoses are spoken for. I have been working on putting complete machines together and have pretty much used up the Lux parts. That was my machine but Charles put the hose on from his own collection. Quite honestly if I had that hose I’m pretty sure I would have hidden it away for myself. It is beautiful and unusual. I sigh as I look at the machine as it is pristine. I can’t seem to remember where I got it but it was from a woman who took exceptionally good care of it. I remember being in awe of its condition. The good news is that it is going to a good home and to someone who will appreciate it and take good care of it. And I know where to visit it.

Speaking of hidden away, I do have a PN 1 with the telescoping wand. Those integrated electrical hose connections are the only way to go. Here are some pictures of It.

I love that "dark sky blue" colour of the main body of this Electrolux. Did the company have a specific name for that colour? It seems very similar to the "Lagoon Blue" that Eureka Williams used in the early 1960's when I was just a toddler.

Understandable on the hose, they are becoming rare but I think I can pay full price and order one from Aerus as an option, just not crazy about the current black color so might wait until whatever color is next if I don’t find one sooner on eBay. I should have looked years ago when I first acquired the G in 2007...there were more used ones to be had on eBay then as I remember occasionally seeing one.

Nice power nozzle and wands. Those telescopic wands are delicate though. No wonder they were only out a short time. I have a PN-1 with the matching neck with the slot locking mechanism rather than the friction clamp fit. It may have been my Aunt’s as she gave me hers when we bought and brought her a new L shaped PN in the 80s and I know hers had that neck. She lived in rural Ohio and our local Electrolux guy was closing his store in NJ and selling his supply discounted so we got her a hose and new power nozzle for her 1205 since we were heading to Ohio for our annual visit to her in the next few weeks via car. I had never seen the slot locking mechanism much until then and it was reintroduced in the mid 80s I think late Silverado era on the upper PN wands and I do like it and Aerus still uses it today on the Lux Classic. But interestingly enough the bare floor tool uses the friction clamp lock still...probably because the plastic wands for it don’t have the locking slot. Before the mid 80s I always wondered what those two slots on Moms Electrolux hose handle were for. Her model L was all friction clamp parts and the electric hose handle was curved metal but with the slots. I think she bought hers in 1973. That would put me at age 4 which sounds about right. I still remember the day my Mother bought her L, I was told to not be a pest and that I had to be good and sit on the stairs and watch while the man came out. Was the same guy we bought the parts from for my Aunt in the mid 80s when he closed his store.

It is funny to see how different people use the same vacuum. My aunt never used the flip over rug and floor tool for floors, she used the round dusting brush for the floors and it took her a while to vacuum them. She used the rug and floor tool for her furniture and drapes instead on the end of the hose handle only. She also never had accessory wands with her 1205 either which I thought was odd but I got her a set from something we acquired along the way but she never really got into using them. We always used the power nozzle with its wand and left that assembled and the combination rug and floor tool assembled to the two aluminum wands. This way you never had to bother bending down to change heads. Perhaps most Electrolux salesman were instructed to set buyers up this way as it would have been a selling feature that you don’t have to bend down to change floor attachments. I dint know...I still use my Electrolux this way myself as it just seems logical. I rarely if ever take the power nozzle off the end of its electric wand set, unless I have stairs to do and dove a sidekick available.

I do wish I could find a nice L like that myself someday and perhaps in the last rendition Gold. For now My nicest old machines are my Grandmothers XXX with no dents or scratches and a complete set of the original attachments including the sprayer. A model G with one small ding, a Marquise with virtually no scrapes or dents even on the bottom! And an Aerus Lux Classic from mid 2000s with virtually no scuffs and virtually no use on the PN, flip over rug and floor tool, or sidekick, crevice tool and combination dusting brush appear to have rarely been used ...only the single sided floor tool appears to have been the primarily used tool and for a machine that is 10 to 15 years old this is quite good. The wands do have some odd wear on them, the back side bottom edges appear to have been dragged as if they were used a lot with no attachment to clean carpet along the wall. As if for edge cleaning. It has literally worn down the plastic.
