Greetings folks,
I have a Sanitaire S-485 that has a bad motor. I was vacuuming last week and suddenly I smelled an acrid smell and the breaker tripped. I reset the breaker and started the vacuum again and inside the exhaust it appeared the motor was arcing. This vacuum is a 1992 model, however, it looks like a 1700, 3700 Eureka Powerteam vacuum; it even uses the Style B bags. The motor is an 11.5 amp unit with 4.0 peak horsepower, and it operates quite well. Where can I find a motor? Thanks for your replies, Craig.

Nope

If it trips the power it points to two things. The field coil which controls the distribution of power. If it was arcing it could be carbon brushes. I'm not sure a motor is what you need.
Check coil and carbon brushes. Then if there good replace the motor.

If the breaker tripped, that leads me to believe it either has a shorted winding in the motor or perhaps the bearings are seizing up, either way causing the motor to draw too much current to operate. I suppose if the brushes are worn down to literally nothing, it might also trip the breaker.

First thing I would do is get access to the motor and turn it by hand to see if it turns easily.
