I have removed the vacuum end, small bar held in place with 2 screws, flat retaining ring, bearing cover and bearings. I don’t see an apparent way to go any further. The cord needs to be replaced and the rewinder spring isn’t working. Is it time to take to someone who knows how to repair it?

Unfortunately, I don't think you can disassemble the Model G cord winder. Your best bet is to try to find a replacement cord winder. I'm sure someone on here has a spare one. DO NOT throw it away.

Yes the cord winder can be dismantled and repaired.

I found an old post from 2007 on how to do it:

You just have to watch it so the spring doesn't go 'sproing'.

Tis is what I have. I believe it from a model G.
I do not own any of the older ones before the 1205.
weight is about 4-/2 pounds.

Your local Aerus dealer can do it

Likely your local Aerus dealer can do it for you. Or....I have spliced the cord right before where it goes into the spool with wire nuts then cover with black tape. Note that Electrolux loops all of the cords once in the beginning step of tying shoelaces. This is important to prevent yanking the cord out of the spool if pulled on too hard so reinstall this step.

And yes, when you remove the spool and spring on the little spool they should come off together, you need to hold them together so the spring steel spring doesn’t unwind and end up a mess everywhere, it can cut your fingers as well if it starts spinning and you try to catch it. I learned from trial and error. Even if the spring comes unwound, it can, with some patience, be rewound. Also reassembling you can’t over do it or it will pull off at the end of the cord. Your replacement cord should be the same length as the original, do not try to go longer, it will create all sorts of issues.

It can be opened and repaired

You have to unscrew the two screws under the rubber bumper near where the silver metal part meets the painted back end of the vacuum cleaner. No need to remove the back end of the vacuum.

To remove the bumpers, you have to pull them hard the unhook carefully from the keyhole slots in the picture above otherwise the knobs will tear off and the bumper won’t tightly refasten to the back of the cleaner. The G’s integrated cord winder is very similar to the cord winders inside on the L’s and later AF’s for anyone who has worked on those.

Most all parts of an Electrolux were designed to be serviceable except the main motor shaft bearing which was supposed to never need replacing, though machines whose main motor bearing that wears out after 20 plus years could in theory just be replaced if they were made replaceable, but usually those machines have so much wear on them all over, hose, attachments, etc, that by the time it would need a main motor bearing one is better off upgrading to a new entire machine I think was Electrolux’s philosophy on this, or the whole motor could be replaced.

Cordwinders on models pre 1205 are better in my opinion, and the really old ones on XXX,LX, And E’s and early AFs were the best and most still perform very well today. They are the smallest ones, in chrome, blue, or cream with a chrome strip. The newer ones on 1205 and forward seem to always have some sort of spool dragging issue once the plastic cover is installed and closed. You can hear it as the cord travels in and out and it slows down the speed of the cord and causes the cord to slow enough to engage the stop sometimes one or more times when recoiling. Not sure if there is a fix for this issue.

All Electrolux bearings are replaceable if you try hard enough! Just remove the rivets, change the bearing, and replace the rivets with small screws. Works like a charm.
