Hello, Vacuum community, I am so happy to be able to use a website like this one. I have been interested in 80's-90's vacs on and off for years, and am back in the vacuum cleaner groove. Today I went all the way down to San Diego to get a Dirt Devil Toughmate, because the only article I can find on this vac is on this website, and the user didn't have much info on it. I am here to answer all questions on it. It uses type 4 belts, and d style bags. Very loud, like other cleaners from its time, and half good build quality. The cord hook's clips all snapped off so I just glued it in place and wont be able to turn it to release whole cord at once. It's fine though, because I am used to this from my DD Broom Vac. I am very happy to have a rare hard body cleaner, and love to look at it and use its amazing power. Also, is a Bissell Plus lift off from about the same time rare? Not many people have one, but I assume that is because they all broke and nobody wanted to fix it. It's the Bad kind of rare I guess...

I like the DD they look nice.
The Bissell liftoff vacuum is bad.
I got one from parents motor was shot. My wife's co-worker sent 2 for me to look at seen if I could fix them. The motors we're toast.
Here's how I told my wife to tell her co-worker about the vacuums. It's like driving a huge pickup truck that is powered by a 3 cylinder Geo metro motor. It's a 12 amp motor my 8 amp compact/ ametek motor is 3 times if not 4x.
I have a can vac and a triangle head straight suction royal. The name eludes me now. I also have a number of there handvscs.
Les

I have a Bissell Lift Off, the maroon and gray one. It runs ok. I still need to clean it up and restore it, just never got around to it.

I love that hard bodied Dirt Devil. I have a red version of that vacuum without the headlight.

Your black DD

has the reinforced shell or bag compartment cover. I've got the first year black with red lettering DD Deluxe. They were up to 10 amp. by then and that was too much suction when you put your hand over the hose end the front would suck in quite a bit and after a while they developed hairline cracks and weakened it severely. Realizing this I stopped putting my hand over the hose, lol. For the money,149.00 back then, I really liked these vacuums especially the way they made contact with the carpet. The first red DD's were 7 amp. I like them as well. Nice !Extremely popular they were everywhere back then.
