I bought and put together, after some help from someone here, made my Hoover model 61 work nicely . Then the cord took a dive into 'aged oblivion'.....I haven't been able to find a replacement yet, but have some ideas for a newer replacement. My question now is, I saw a Hoover 28 for sale....and have been trying to understand the differences between the two. I take it that the 28 is a little older....is the 61 a better performer though since it is newer? Was there a big leap in performance between the two? Is there noticeable tone change for better or for worse as Hoover progressed to the 60/61? Considering this model, but deep down , want the 61 working correctly just the same.

thanks

I can help you with those questions. The Hoover 28 and the Hoover 61 were out at exactly the same time. The model 61 was top-of-the-line. It featured an inner paper bag. The motor was stronger by 100 W. The fan on the model 61 was larger with more blades. There is a noticeable difference in sound between the two. The model 61 is also somewhat heavier.

AFAIK, the model 28 and 61 were sold at the same time (1946-1950). The 28 sold more units because it was the lower cost upright. The 28 derived from the prewar 305 and the 61 derived from the prewar model 60. I always liked the flat top profile and headlight better on the 61, most 61's I've encountered over the years were in pretty bad shape. One feature that I wish carried over from the 60 to the 61 was the handle release built into the handle (which I've heard had problems). I've noticed some 61's had GLASS headlight lenses, other plastic. Does anyone know when Hoover made the changeover? Also, some 28's had metal hoods, others bakelite.

This is the post World War II Hoover line-up. From the left, the "Jr." model 115, the model 28, the tank-type model 50, and the model 61 on the right. Lucile Ball was the spokeswoman for Hoover's brand new to the market tank type cleaner.

You can see ads from Hoover calling it

"The Finest Hoover Ever Built".
The 28 became know and used as a commercial cleaner. There were both metal hoods as well as the famous 'bakelite'.
