After taking apart, cleaning, and lubricating this Hoover 541, I thought I'd make the final test at my location of employment! I've always enjoyed bringing my own cleaners in here (sneak peak of what I'd be using otherwise in the back), and the 541 seemed like a great candidate, mostly because I'm still testing the F&G under-the-original bag conversion for these old Hoovers!

Slightly less related, but would anybody recommend repainting the handle? If so, what paint should I use to bring it to a glossy finish like it originally seemed to have been?

Very nice! Personally, I would keep the handle the way it is. It proves its age and authenticity.

i have a 541 i'm going to be starting on. fun part- the rewiring(sarcasm). i've had it for a long time and plugged it in the first and only time about 20 years ago and strange is, after it ran for about 30seconds it shorted out and blew all the breakers in the garage. yours looks nice tho.

Here's a shot of mine with the original bag

I think they used lacquer paint on the handle as well as the motor. I don't think enamel was in wide use in the early 20's.
