Eric (right) and Austin. Austin is a documentary film maker who filmed the entire thing, the loading of the van, the unloading of the van, and the five hour interview with both of us. Apparently it’s going to be submitted to Sundance.

We wouldn’t have been able to do it without any help. A huge thank you to Eric for donating his collection to the museum so the world could enjoy it. We have visitors every day, and tour buses at least monthly. Another huge thank you to my husband Donnie and my great friend Adam (adambomb on vacuumland) for all your time and help.

Hi Tom,

What a great man Eric is to have been thoughtful enough to donate this incredible collection to the one man who can amplify its significance!

And on top of that.. to document and market the whole process!  I can't wait to see that film!

Completely unprecedented in our vacuum enthusiast world!

Congratulations... and I'm heading out to visit you and see it all in a few weeks!!

All the best,

Bill

Thank you Bill. We’ve still got about 30 boxes left to unpack. It should all be done by the time of the vacuum cleaner collector’s annual Thanksgiving party on November 9, which we are holding here at the Vacuum museum for all the vacuum collectors that are our friends. Now if I can just get Hans Craig to make his buttermilk biscuits.

Most of these Hoover small appliances I had only seen in the back of the instruction manuals. I’m so grateful to Eric for sharing his collection with me so that I could show these machines to everyone. I’m going to build a section of shelves in the museum just for the Hoover appliances. I am always learning from my fellow collectors. Filming this whole thing was a very long process, and I was only there for the second half of it. They started filming in New York.

TOM!! Oh my God!!!! All of the HOOVER!

Perhaps you should publish a “Holiday Newsletter”!!! LOL!
You NOW have enough HOOVER in your museum to make any self-proclaimed “Hoovrah-phile” overdose on “sanitarium iced tea”, but....”I’m not one to bash”.......
BWAAAHHAAHAA!!!

This is stellar and I’m definitely planning a visit!

Over 2000 ft.² of my store is dedicated to displaying the vintage vacuums. We have a special shrine to the machines from the original vacuum cleaner collector, Stan Kann. I feel humbled and blessed that Eric took so much time, effort, and expense to pack and transport his amazing collection halfway across this country, to donate to the new vacuum museum. We are going to honor his collection by displaying them in a way that will make him proud. As I’ve said before, we have visitors almost every day, who just want to see the old vacuums. Donnie has learned how to give a tour. While he only comes in to bring me lunch, he does stay long enough that he gets to talk to visitors as well. I truly enjoy sharing the history of vacuums with the average person. People always leave knowing much more about vacuums then when they came in. How many average people have ever seen a general electric roll easy?

Tom,

What a very generous gift. I have never seen 2 Hoovers Canisters with the electric hose.
I think Mike Hayes was the only collector that I knew who had one.
Thanks for sharing the pictures. Wonderful Hoover treasures for sure!

Hoover Lark

Just noticed the Hoover Lark. What a example of 1950's Hoover quality.
What a beautiful shade of red and the bag even looks like it is in excellent shape. I have never seen a Lark in that condition. WOW!

Hans, I remember Mike had that Hoover canister right in his bed room in front of the windows. He was very proud of that machine.

Tom,

Great donation, wonderful vacs.If you made a list of greatest vacs from 50s-70s this would be most of them!
-Is red/chrome commercial vac a Clarke?
-My vote for rarest item is the original Elux upright. With the early clogging problems(later corrected)there were recalls, trades(both to Elux & other dealers)and many trashed by unhappy owners. The upright is hard to find and the box near impossible.
-I have had the Hoover upholstery shampooer and shoe polisher. You will see they are closely related.
Just as you did for Tacony and can now do for you the museum is looking better and better!
Jimmy

Hey Jimmy:

dysonman1's profile picture
I too was blown away when Eric gave me that Electrolux upright. Not only to have the box, but the machine inside is near new. IF it ran 3 or 4 times, that would be a lot. All the seals are still good under the bag door. As a lover of Electrolux products, that one will sit next to my mint model G, on display in the "Wall of Fame" section of the New Museum.

The red/chrome machine is a Pullman-Holt. The kind that would be used in Sinclair or Sunoco full service gas stations from the 50's and 60's. Where the attendant would quickly vacuum your car mats while the family was enjoying a Coke, inside the service station.

Thanks for the kind words on all the effort to make something nice that the public can enjoy without cost to them.

The commercial automatic was the first commercial Electrolux (other than the Hospital G), and was definitely the first with wet pick-up capabilities. It has a fiberglass hepa filter and is very quiet. The disposable bags are HUGE. I'm so thankful to Eric. There was some VCCC member who was looking for one (10 years ago, so he might not even be with us any longer - I don't remember who exactly it was) like it was his Holy Grail. And now I have two of them. One has the 10 foot hose and commercial straight suction attachments, the other has the power nozzle. I have two owners manuals for the commercial automatic as well. Will display them at the Convention in May.

Thank you Tom and everyone! This was a very difficult decision. I have already downsized from a 3,000 sq ft home to a high ranch. The next move is to a one bedroom condo in Florida for the winter and a trailer in the Endless Mountains in PA
in the summer where I am Grounds Manager at Hillside Campgrounds.
I have to say that i went through every emotion. I truly felt that I wanted my collection in a museum instead of selling it all. KUDOS to Austin Bunn who is a screen writer and has produced and won awards for his documentaries. Austin was a great supporter as is my spouse and one of my best friends Joe who made the trip with me. Check out Lavender Hill, one of Austin's documentaries.
Thank you again and I sincerely hope that everyone can enjoy the museum!
