I thought "Why not post a thread of my favorite vacuum brands?" so here it is...
Lets start off with my favorite brands
Brand: REASON:
Eureka / Had one since my childhood
Hoover / Probably the best vacuum brand on earth
Dirt Devil / Same as eureka
Dyson / The Apple of vacuum cleaners
ORECK / Old Orecks to be exact
Now it's time for the ones I hate...
Brand: Reason:
Shark / The crapiest designs ive' ever seen/Made In China
TTI / Buying out hoover and dirt devil/ Making Dirt Devil, Hoover,Oreck and Vax trash. and that's it for now.

As for TTI making their brands trash, that's not entirely true. There are still some commercial models available that hasn't much changed like the Hoover Guardsman or the Conquest for example. TTI has also made some big splashes like the Hoover Hushtone line. And TTI is trying to keep and grow jobs in the states. You can find the Oreck Elevate line are still assembled here. Though they have gotten rid of the Dirt Devil and Royal brands because their sales have gone downhill. The website for Royal is now gone forever. They probably would've still kept those brands alive if the market was there.

That being said. Since you have listed about the ones that were mainly sold in department stores, here is a list in order of my favorites that I grew up with.

Kenmore/Panasonic
Eureka/Electrolux
Hoover/Maytag
Dirt Devil/Royal
Bissell/Ryobi

I would've added Black & Decker to the list but they've never really made full sized vacuums back then. Well, they did made a bagless canister vac back then but I never used one before so I'm not going to count that.

Royal has really gone downhill these days, it's really sad.
