This was my great grandmothers cleaner. Its a friction powered cleaner. I cant remember anyone ever using it, no one in the family knew what happened to it, but i clearly remembered it standing behind the open kitchen door when i was a small boy and my parents packing up the house. It was difficult to explain what i was looking for after thinking about it, but after a visit to my grandfather i found it hidden beneath a pile of things in the garage roof.

I'm not positive but I believe Fuller brush company who recently was bought by simplicity and now owned by different company.
It's a cool piece.

Made in Northampton UK by Burrage and Boyd Ltd. There were various incarnations of The Newmaid. This is one of the last versions.

Thanks for all the comments and feedback. @Hoovermatic do you perhaps know where i can look for further info? It doesnt work really good. The vacuum chamber has got too many places where it looses suction and the fan is very lightweight it doesnt spin for a very long time.

They were never very powerful machines, however here should be enough airflow to inflate the bag. After a good fast push across the carpet the fan should take about 20 seconds to slow down and stop. If you can get it apart I would drop some oil on the fan bearings. Can you show us any photos of the underneath. I have one of the much earlier models.

@Hoovermatic...

Can you upload a pic of yours? I like the look of the older metal ones. I will take a picture when i get home tonight. I think the vacuum chamber of my model is not sealed good enough, too many places where it looses suction, it barely pics up dry grass. The brushroll is slipping on the big wheels, so theres no agitating function really.

I will also upload a pic of the red top taken off.

The idea is brilliant

I just think they should redesign the suction fan, maybe with one or two more blades on the fan and they should gear the brushroll to the wheels.

Will take a photo this evening so you can see. They do collect a fair bit of dust and fluff

This is the one I have, the bag support is slightly different and the bag print design is different

It works ok yeah. Picks up things quite quickly and does give the carpet a brushed look. The fan outlet is quite large so there is plenty of room for air flow. As you can see in the photo the bag is inflated when pushing to and fro.

The design of the one you have does mean that if that red cover plate is not air tight then you will lose any precious suction. Is there a gasket on the red cover? Its very clean inside too. I would have expected the paint to be a bit chipped inside from all the dust and dirt.

@Hoovermatic...

My great grandmother didnt clean very often, i dont think it was used much, there is some fluff in the bag. They used a broom to sweep the rugs and fridays they threw it over the washing line to beat the dust out. Come to think of it, there was nothing in the house that used electricity, i worked through my finger with the singer sewing machine, the stove was a coalstove, there was also a non electric carpet washer. I also have the non electric ORB Polisher they used to polish the wooden floors. Theres no gasket on the red cover. I also think its there where all the precious suction is lost. I wish i can find a model like yours! I like the all metal design.

I had one like the New Maid once upon a time. Stan Kann gave it to me. It had a canary yellow base and a blue bag with pink lettering and stars all over it. But the brand name was different and I can't for the life of me remember what it was -- Coronet, or something like that.

i wish i had taken a pic. i got mine about 10+ years ago. i went to the antique shop on the corner of main street the day after the car show. nothing special during the show where all the stores were swamped. the very next day they'd already had new arrivals-it was still in the middle of the room leaning up against a very old dresser. price tag was $50 but i got away with $25. i wonder if this is the same one you had?
