This Thursday marks Hoover's (spelled correctly), birthday.111yrs ago, on this date, The Hoover Suction Sweeper Company was born. I'll once more sit on that porch with my "good friend Tom". Tom who? Why, Tom Anderson.
We'll revisit our old familiar stomping grounds, see Dick Pike, Miss Jane (Turner, not Hathaway). Pics will abound. We always have a superior time.
Stay tuned.

You don't want to see what wacky costume Miss Hathaway has in store this time?

And, I'll be taking home some wonderful treasures, some from the "Dick Pike Collection".
Getting excited.......

my late aunt's 1076! The 1st one I ever saw... new. It's been abused, etc. . I'm also bringing her 87 Constellation. Tom and I (helper) will bring them back to life.

I hope you have a fantastic time! Take lots of pictures. I would be curious to know if there are any final reminders of where the Hoover vault used to be?

I have some bricks, too.

gottahaveahoove's profile picture
I'm going to have a local monument shop emboss; "The HOOVER Company" on them.
As far as the vault, it has been ripped up. I took the signage right outside of the room that reads,"Modles and Samples", commonly known as the "vault". I don't think much progress (if any) has been made at the place since my last trip. This is my 12th visit ti North Canton. Imagine that.

We took a family trip to that region of Ohio many moons ago. Of course I went to the museum. Still have my "Hoover 100th" shirt that Tom have me when I toured the museum. I have pictures somewhere...

I am here on Hoover's birthday.

gottahaveahoove's profile picture
I got here at a decent hour. Weather is great. Great to see everybody. We got to work right away restoring my aunt's 1076 upright. The poor thing sat in an unheated house for six years. Needless to say the base paint is blistered. However, Tom took it apart, scrubbed, greased, etc. and put it all back together. I was even able to obtain an original bag which Tom installed. When I go home, I will replace the lens with an authentic 1076 lens. Tom mentioned it was saved just in the nick of time. We plugged it in and it hums like it did 46 years ago when my uncle brought it home new. Next on the list is her poor, sad, aged 86 Constellation. Pics of before, during and after tomorrow. The fun has begun. Stay tuned.

Before photos

gottahaveahoove's profile picture
Here is the before and the during. The 69 only needed the wires changed as it was on high speed all of the time. I have a new lens. This one was special because it belonged to the late Glenn Dienst. The 1076 brush roll was completely shot. The motor on this machine had been replaced at some time.

After a complete overhaul

gottahaveahoove's profile picture
It runs like new. I will install a new lens when I return home. Even though the base finish is rough from being in an inclement house, it has been brought back from the dead and not a moment too soon. Thanks Tom for saving a family machine that led me to purchase my own still perfect 1076.

Today was a whirlwind

gottahaveahoove's profile picture
We attended numerous estate sales and tag sales and thrift stores oh my! I spy these with my little eye. A Penncrest upright with tools and a Floor a Matic with a headlight. You know my favorite words "Put them in the car!". Spa treatments await.

In another store in Canton

In a corner, we saw numerous foreign species. Behind them was a Hoover stick vac. Out in front it goes. "Nobody puts baby in a corner!".

We also saw this little cleaner

We had to leave this behind. There was not room for me to take it home to give to someone who would really want and appreciate it. See ma, no gloves!

Then our last stop was at the home of Dick and JoEllen Pike

gottahaveahoove's profile picture
I left with wonderful things. For example: Hoover cuff links, a tie, a Hoover baseball, a photo album, shoelaces, Hoover rugs, framed photos of all the Hoover facilities, hats, appliances, seasonal ad posters, mugs, etc. It was wonderful to see the family. Thank god I am driving an SUV! There is not room in the car for a cookie. Some of these wonderful things might be available at mini meets, conventions, who knows? Looking forward to tomorrow!

Then we went onto the Hoover Historical Center

The real live museum on the grounds of Walsh University. Tom and I met two new tour guides, Kathy and Christine. It was great to roam through the whole place once more. I always feel welcome there.

Time to leave

gottahaveahoove's profile picture
Seems like we just get started, and before you know it... The SUV is filled to the brim. Do SUVs have brims? All sorts of treasures will be leaving North Canton for the first time. Weather was perfect. Hosts were wonderful. All is well in the world. Hope you enjoyed my trip as much as I did. Talk more when I return home and have to unload this vehicle before I return it on Monday. Back to reality! To take that one photo, I had to hold the items in place so that they would not fall out. Suffice to say, I have acquired a few items on this trip.

Thanks for the Trip!

John,
Thanks for taking the time to share the pictures of your trip with everyone.
It is wonderful to see someone have such PURE JOY with their hobby and your
enthusiasm reaches each who reads and views your trip posts.
It is almost like being in Ohio with you.
You are one happy guy when close to Hoover, and it comes through.

And I THOUGHT I really liked my 47 year old Dial-A-Matic!!!!

That Hoover district looks epic. You brought the convertible back from the dead. The pictures were quite nice as old machine or before the restore was old and now it's brand new.

annual visits to north canton

bnsd60m9200's profile picture
for me, late may seems to be me goto for visting Tom, Heather, and "hooverland" as i call it. i go there after going to "the happiest place on earth" Cedar Point in Sandusky.

i knew tom about 4 years before i met him in person last year, and him and heather treat me like family. its always fun seeing all the internal coporate stuff he's amassed over the years, enjoying and playing with his collection, and seeing the hoover plant and junking in town.

it feels "right" there to me. people are so friendly and warm in ohio a stark contrast to dfw. so much so im moving to ohio in a couple of years. itll be nice visit Tom regularly and even say hello to you John and get some more of that great pittston hospital iced tea and visit your nice home too.

Some love it, some hate it, others just make fun of it/me. It's quite OK. There will be loads of it here when the convention "comes East".

I now have wonderful framed photos of: the main plant, the international building, the Industrial Park, AND all of the factories around the world! Simply AMAZING. well, for those who like Hoover. (Genuinely like Hoover. not saying so publicly, but honestly having no use for the brand).
These will proudly be on display in my home during the convention in Scranton.

They do like three big canvas pics or prints that are all the same print.
Hoover land would be pretty epic on a big 3 piece canvas print.

"--factories around the world--"

There is a wonderful architecture book of 1992 from Phaidon Press on the art deco Perivale factory that should be with every Hoover collection.
