Well, you'll just have to deal with the oil smell. If the armature is oily, it's not a problem. If the commutator is oily, it needs to be cleaned, and you will also have to clean the brushes. Remove the brushes, wet a paper towel with any alcohol and wipe the commutator all the way around. Wipe down the brushes and make sure there is no oil residue on them before reinstalling.
That's it. |

use oil. go to the automotive store and grab some blue brake and bearing grease. oiling the bearing will destroy it. Ball Bearings-Grease Sleeve Bearings- oil |

its a ball bearing, those motors have 2 ball bearings. The canisters usually use an upper sleeve bearing and a lower ball bearing, i have serviced quite a few of these and have quite a few of them as well. |

It's really not the end of the world. If oiling the ball bearing silenced it, it was likely dry already. In other words, at the end of its service life already. If the bearing is not open on the sides, I'd just leave it alone until it quits, then get a new one. If it's an open frame bearing, pack it with some general purpose automotive grease from the parts store.
In fact, if the ball bearing is a sealed bearing, likely the oil you put on it barely penetrated it, and it's probably fine. |
