I found this in a dumpster a couple months ago.It works fine, but it needed height adjuster wheels and a new plug. It is, from what I can tell, a year 2000 model going by the filter configuration and powerhead style. It still has the attachment door and 3 of the 4 attachments. It is one of my best performing vacuums!

Your looks like

the one I pulled from a dumpster. Mine is a red Progressive model 22812200 and serial#D20911134. 9amp without pn 12 with. They are a good cleaner. I think mine needs new bearings as it's way louder than my other Kenmore 4.5 canister. Nice find!

If it is from 2000, then yours was assembled in the Danville Kentucky plant.

They used that style for a few years, so probably 2000-2004 era. The second gen Progressives with the wider lens headlight came out in 2005.

If there's still a Sears in your area, they still sell the attachments for these. Or can get online.

Thanks!

That is pretty cool as I am close to there. There is a sears a few miles away, but I am unsure if they even sell vacuum parts as I have never gone in. I will check online though.

Be careful when ordering online. Their database is never updated, and the parts they say are in stock usually aren't. You have to call them to cancel an order too. I have a part for a Hoover Z700 I ordered in October 2018 that was supposed to be in stock and available placed on backorder and it's still on backorder 8 months later. All the Sears outlets in my area have all been demolished as well.

My local Sears department store has the 4 attachments for these, in current logo packaging. You could also order them on eBay if you didn't want to order from Sears.

Kieran, that is a really good trash find! Amazing what people will throw away instead of keeping or selling eh?

From the dark blue color of your Kenmore, I think that is from when they first started producing them about 1998-1999. If that's the case, it will have the Ametek single stage motor, before they switched to Panasonic motors. Given the age of the vacuum, if you like it & want it to last a long time, I would strongly suggest opening it up, seeing what motor it has, & replace the carbon brushes & use a armature seating stone. If it was used regularly, the carbon brushes are probably worn down to nearly nothing by now. The carbon brushes are available for the Ametek motor, & easy to find....the Panasonic motor, yes they are available, but you're gonna have to hunt a bit for them thru various vac shop distributors & websites, a little harder to find.

A few other hints to ensure long life:

- Use a second set of wands for the floor brush, DO NOT use the quick release pedal on the powerhead neck. The hole that the buttonlocker goes into eventually becomes slightly bigger over time - that allows the buttonlocker to wiggle a little bit, & also allows a little play to develop between the plug on the neck & the receptacle on the wand. That results in arcing between the 2 parts & burns out the plug on the neck & the receptacle on the wand in time. Go to your local vac shop & pick up a cheap set of plastic wands to use with your floor brush, that prevents the damage from ever happening.

- Open up the hose handle & use some krazy glue to hold the powerhead receptacle in place. It is a rubber piece with 2 clips that hold onto a plastic holder, over time the rubber clips start to give & allow the receptacle to move up a bit & not make full contact with the plug on the wand. That causes arcing between the 2 parts & burns out the plug & receptacle. Gluing the receptacle directly onto the plastic holder inside the handle ensures it stays put & never causes a issue.

- Make sure when you store the vacuum, ALWAYS take the hose off the wand & leave it on the ground when storing it. Allowing the hose to hang off the wand constantly causes the hose material to crack over time & require a new hose carcass or duct taping it. That one simple measure will ensure your hose lasts the life of the vacuum.

- When you install a bag, make sure you use some clear packer's tape & tape the cardboard collar onto the bag holder. Doing this ensures the collar can't slide up & allow some of the dirt to get into the bag compartment & cause a mess.

Best of luck & enjoy your new-to-you Kenmore.

Rob

Did some of the earliest Progressive models use a 2 stage Ametek or were they all single? I know some of the Whispertones in the 90s had a two stage on the TOL versions.

In addition to the tips, if you haven't I recommend you wash the foam filter inside after the motor if it has one. I did this on a Whispertone and was amazed how much carbon dust had built up. The vacuum also seemed to run stronger and cooler after too.

Thanks! The part that has worn down is actually the middle wand. It has been used so many times it is no longer a hole, it is a 2" groove! Once it is all serviced and has new wands it will probably end up being my daily driver!

Congratulations Kieran!!

What great finds! What a shame that someone threw away such nice Kenmore Vacuum Cleaners! But awesome for you!

I LOVE hearing about saved dumpster vacuums as it infuriates me how many great vacuums get thrown away by so many! Discarded vacuums are like abandoned pets to me.. I always stop and check out discarded vacuums, being thrown out and sometimes knock on doors to ask if I may take vacuums from peoples trash and then I refurbish them, and donate them back to local shops.

Congratulations on your finds and thank you for sharing with us!

Patrick

Thank you for all those tips as I have a similar vac to Kieran. Just yesterday as I was vacuuming with the powermate, it would cut out when I pulled back on wand then start up again on the push forward. After reading your suggestions I know where to look for probable cause. I actually have three powermates that work with this Kewnmore. One of them started doing the same thing about six months ago so I just put in away for now, but I'm seeing a pattern here now, so thanks again. Kieran does your Kenmore seem a little louder than other Kenmores, if you have any others? Mine was a dumpster grab and it's louder than all four other Kenmore vacs, thinking bearings. Still one of the best I use on the daily. Billy

I live in a large apartment complex next door to another complex. I am shocked at the amount of vacuums I have found in the dumpsters in the past few months. For one, the reason it was thrown out was because the dirt cup was full! So wasteful.

I don't own any others but mine does seem quieter compared to some of my other machines. It does have a bit of a whine, but it is not too bad.
