I'm starting a thread to see who has Kirby commercial vacuums. You see past posts of owners and none are too recent.
I have a 1984 American Lincoln super sweep 180. I think Chris has 1 or 2 comvac 1300s.
I was wondering if people would share if they have them still.
I got email from dj Taylor about 6 months ago he said he lost his American Lincoln in a storage unit he didn't pay on. I imagine he lost his janitronic too.
Thanks attach pics too please.

Les,

I am sorry to hear about Justin's Super-Sweep. I know his is the army green one that was produced from 1972-1979.

Les,

I do have 2 ComVac 1300s. Both are (were) new in box. Here is a photo of one of them. The other is still in its box all wrapped up. If you would like more photos, let me know!

What are the differences between Kirby commercial vacuums and residential models? They look like regular Kirby vacs that have been spray painted.

Brandon,

Unlike your typical household Kirby, this breed of vacuums with their non-removable heads were sold to businesses. All of these had 18" wide nozzles.

The first in this lineup was the Kirby Janitronic, produced from 1967 to 1968. It was a metallic copper on the external parts, with coppertone trim pieces. Unlike what followed, the head on this machine was actually removable.

Then came the rebranding to Super-Sweep, following Scott & Fetzer's purchase of American-Lincoln. The first entry in this newly-named series of 18" wide cleaners had a "St. Patrick's Day" color scheme, with emerald green external parts and white and emerald green trim pieces (white handle grip, emerald green cord, white nozzle and headlight trim). This version was produced from 1968 to 1972.

Next up was a brand new color scheme of army green throughout (same as the Kirby Dual Sanitronic 80's trim pieces). This version was also the first to have a 3-wire cord, instead of the 2-wire one like the Janitronic and the 1st-gen Super-Sweep. This 2nd-gen version was produced from 1972 to 1979.

And then, we come to the 3rd-gen Super-Sweep 180 with blue external housing parts and white trim pieces (white bag assembly, and white handle grip, headlight and nozzle bumpers, and white belt cover), produced from 1979 to 1982. Unlike what came before, this had a much-improved motor assembly, with a new-style field and carbon brush assembly. The handle fork and grip were changed to what we saw on the Classic III as part of that model's mid-1978 changes: the grip now had a new-style cord hook, and the fork had the hooks relocated to the toe-touch control side. In late 1980, the 10-blade metal fan was replaced by the 11-blade Lexan plastic fan. This 3rd-gen Super-Sweep would continue into 1982-85 as the Super-Vac 180, which had the Heritage-style wide wheels on all fours.

I was just wondering who has the commercial vacuums. I know dj Taylor had a green super sweep and a red white and blue one like mine but he had a tradition bag on it. He lost both in storage unit. So in Utah in last 2 years a green super sweep is owned by someone. If I could get it.
The comvac is cool hammer tone black. My super sweep and Chris's comvac are exact same under the hood. Mine has a 18" brush his is 13" brush.
I believe a fellow Utah collector may have a commercial vacuum. I'm just seeing who has. Like the army green or saint Patrick's green. The sanitronic copper is rare but not into copper vacuum. The super sweep 560 prototype a fellow member has with 518 belt lifter is cool.
I'd want the d80 super sweep.
I'm tempted to make my own. I'd have to buy a royal 18" brush roll and housing. I could paint everything to match and get a custom sticker made fairly cheap. It may be the only way I can get one.
I think Chris oem bags are rare and worth just as much as his vacuum is. I need to take off white cap and put a belt lifter cap on it.
The super sweep seriously has power. It seems alot more powerful than it states. It has a d80 coil but as a single speed.
The led light I put on and amodel fan are nice upgrades.
If anyone has commercial Kirby's please post or if you know who does please post. I'd just like to know where the machines are.
PS I do have 3 505s I'd trade one for a green janitronic in good condition. If anyone is interested.
Les

You could also send your tired 18" brush roll to Don O'Connor of Youngstown, OH.

I've often wondered why the Kirby commercial vacs are rarer than hen's teeth and why the Kirby company practically denies their existence. Did they not sell well? I recall even years ago seeing maybe one or two SuperVac 180's in a vacuum store but that's it. The Janitronic I've only seen pictures of, and not even a complete vacuum.

Hershel,

The Janitronic and the COMVAC series were sold only through Kirby's own dealerships, while the American-Lincoln Super-Sweeps could be purchased at other janitorial supply houses.

Hey

They are the hardest vacuum to ever see
I had a person in New York flake out on a 1973 janitronic. The siroco janitronic and 560 janitronic you will never see. One member has 519 or 560 janitronic only of it's kind. Ben has a pic of sirocco one.
Like I said I have 3 505s and one super sweep.

As far as them being rare...

They might not have sold well is my guess. Usually commercial equipment costs more than its domestic equivalent, and Kirby vacuums are/were already expensive as it is. The commercial versions of the Kirby probably followed this trend and commanded
a price premium over the domestic units, when Hoover/Sanitaire/etc are/were cheaper.

Otherwise, I'm pretty sure that they were sturdy machines with the potential for a really long lifespan, just like the domestic version, though something minor like a broken fan or a bad switch may have doomed many of those units as it's easier for a lot of people (and businesses) to toss certain things like vacuums rather than replace.

Kirby F&G bags

Les...

The bags came pre-installed, but I’ve removed them and keep them protected. But I figured you might want a picture. It’d be neat to find more of these, though I’m doubtful I ever will.

Les,

I would think they were made like any other Kirby brush roll, out of hard rock maplewood and with nylon bristles. That is what it says in the COMVAC 1300 and 1600 brochures.

Hey

lesinutah's profile picture
I called and talked to Don at eureka store in Illinois. He asked if they were glued or stapled. It's just like 16" brush which is wood spray painted grey. Non removable end caps.
Would They be glued or not? I'm thinking glued but idk.

Les,

They are removable, but very hard to do so. These would have sleeve bearings, too.

I could move them but it's a super rare brush roll I'll probably just ship to him and not ruin anything.
