So there is a Heritage, then heritage 84, Heritage II, Heritage Legend, and Heritage II Legend II? Does anyone have the differences nailed down?

Blaze,

Yes, you guessed right, there were a total of five.

Heritage - original, 1981 to 1983
Heritage 84 - same as original, but from January to September 1984 (coincides with Kirby's 70th anniversary)
Heritage II - September 1984 to October 1987
Heritage II Legend - November 1987 to February 1989
Legend II - March 1989 to 1991

Differences

Do you know what differences are between each?

Blaze,

Heritage 84 = differences from Heritage 1HD
hubcaps, handle grip say "KK84"
labels on nozzle and bag top say "Kirby Heritage 84"
bag cloth has tag on back that says "Genuine Kirby 1984"

Heritage II
early models carry over old-style nozzle casting, and cloth bags on this early run also have the "Genuine Kirby 1984" tag (carried over from the Heritage 84)
spring 1985: nozzle shaved (loses its "wings") to reduce weight
spring 1986: nozzle adds a BPI light, which senses if the brush roll is working properly or not

Heritage II Legend
new internal motor wiring
stronger disposable bags
improved brush roll assembly
improved hose (no more aluminum)

Legend II
maroon color instead of black
later production changed attachments to Generation 3 style, and Renovation Group casting changed color from black to maroon to match rest of trim

HERITAGE 84

I have seen a couple heritage 84's without the nozzle label, which means I guess they don't have the original nozzle. Thank you so much for the info

Top Handle grip assembly.

The Heritage and Heritage 84 didn't have many changes between them although some early Heritage's had a suction relief vent on the front nozzle (underneath headlight) From the Heritage 11 on wards some changes included the top handle grip assembly, Earlier Heritage's and some early Heritage two's had a mushroom shaped nut on the bag side of the handle which you then screwed (assembled) the handle together through the cord holder, During the Heritage 11 production they did away with that and added the thread into the handle casting itself. Also the power (safety) light was added, The earlier Heritage and H-84 didn't have this, The Heritage 11 rear motor cover had a couple of changes, The air intake was moved from bag side to the opposite side along with a slightly different casting around the rear wheels, The Heritage 11 also saw a new smaller Mini emtor on the bag assembly although some first Heritage 11 did have the larger semi emtor until it was phased out, The H2 models that had the mini emtor also had a extended rear wheel axle.

Craig,

The reusable (shake out) bag option was available all the way up to the Legend II, but the very last printing of the instruction book for that model made no mention of it.

Ben yes it was, but over here in the UK they weren't really a common option on the L2 (I don't know about over there in the states) My father was a Kirby salesman. The Heritage and Heritage 2-L were sold with the options of having the 13' nozzle and sani emtor/shake out but these became less popular as the Heritage series went on so when Kirby released the Legend 2 they didn't really promote the options when selling the L2 to customers, although I believe if customers asked for either of the options it would be available but hardly any were sold in these configurations apparently.

Craig,

They were never common, even here in the US. Most sales of the Heritage/Legend series, with the shake out bag, were to businesses.

Shake out with 13

So if it was a shake out, it had a 13 inch nozzle? or could they be mismatched? 13 inch nozzle and mini-emptor and vice versa?

Blaze,

Sometimes, but not always, will you find a Heritage/Legend series with both a shake-out bag and a 13" nozzle. Examples containing both features will be extremely rare, especially the Heritage 84 and the Legend II.

Any cleaner with a 13" nozzle, from the factory, will have the suffix "-13" in its model number (i.e., 1HD-13), regardless of if the bag type is disposable (Mini Emtor) or with shake out bag. Any of those without the suffix will be a mix-and-match.
