Today begins a new chapter. The NEW Vac Museum is opening May 1st in Rolla, Missouri. I got tired of the horrible experience at Tacony with the new management and I hated being forced to sell Chinese-made Simplicity vacuums, I decided to open my own Vacuum Cleaner shop. Since I have 3500 ft.², I am also opening the new museum of vacuums. Oh, did I mention, it is 500 feet from the entrance to Walmart. ChicagoMike has already made the T-shirts and the entrance mats. Everyone for a 50 mile radius around the store, has to pass directly in front of my new store in order to go to Walmart. It is the only Walmart around.

This what it looks like? It sure looks small from the outside! Or did you mean the museum is another building separate from the repair shop?

This building would be a cool fit for the museum, eh? Even plumbed for public restrooms. Looks like it was an old Sears Essentials store. www.loopnet.com/Listing/1...

The store actually goes from the “S” on the left hand side all the way over to the store on the right hand side. 3500 ft.² huge show room. I also have room for my “hall of fame”. We put the shelves up last weekend and are going to stain them tomorrow. We put the shelves up last weekend and are going to stain them tomorrow. I’m going to sue Tacony for keeping about 300 vacuums which make up the rest of my collection. This is how a major corporation treats a 10 year employee.

So that supposed rumor about the museum closing may not be a rumor afterall. Well I'm glad to see it's more just moving, and changing ownership, rather than just straight up closing. It's a shame though, I don't really know the details, but I was hoping to one day visit Tacony's HQ, but now I'm kinda iffy.

Regardless it's looking good and I wish you well in your new path. I am curious though what brands will you be selling? Aerus? Sebo? Maybe even something like Royal?

The space is huge.

More than enough room for a retail store, with both the new and reconditioned Vacuums, a Hall of Fame, and a huge vacuum museum. We even have T-shirts for sale. A lot of work To get it ready by May 1. But it will be done. And now I get to start making the money for myself. The hell with making money for someone else.

Wow, that is bigger inside than it looks! I didn't know it had an extension on the back, that's cool. I like the dated decor of the building, it suits the vacuum collection well, and I love wood clad walls.

Are you going to have divided "theme rooms" like the old museum, or is it just going to be a cascading timeline along the floor?

I never knew Tacony owned the entire museum, maybe they think because they own it, they own it as the enterprise and everything in it including the vacuums?

Hey, maybe people will stop in and find a vintage vacuum is better and cheaper than Walmart!

New Store

Congratulations on your new store. I will be buying parts and bags from you as out here in wyming there are not any good vacuum stores. I have one of your Tom Gasko signature series Airways. It is #3 of 100. I love it because it is purple my favorite color. So hopefully I might get to use it some day and get the bags from you....

Oh, I am going to sell brand new Aerus Electrolux. As well as Titan Canisters, which are really Kenmore’s, because our Sears store in town has closed. I have 10 years experience with this market. The one thing I am not going to sell is Simplicity nor Riccar. They will never give me an account. That’s OK. There are thousands of people who have bought vacuum cleaners for me in the last 10 years at the outlet store, that will buy a new Electrolux from me.

Congratulations Tom on your new venture, I am sure you will do well. I see nothing but bad coming from Tacony, it sounds like they are in trouble, and I think their last ditch effort to resect their company is to now sell Simplicity products in "big box" stores which is something that was promised to us dealers many years ago when I signed up as a Simplicity dealer. The quality of their vacuums has turned to shit, and the misleading fact that they are built here in USA is a lot of garbage, you can see China all over them. Well, good luck with the new store, I hope someday I can get out there to see it.

When one door closes, another opens

Sorry to hear how poorly you were treated by Tacony. I have heard about the Museum before (like on blogs, travel articles, etc) so it seems like it has gotten a lot of exposure from tourists in the area, and not just vacuum/appliance fanatics like us. Hopefully the swarms of tourists find their way to your shop, and possibly leave with a new or reconditioned vac (or a souvenir at the very least, like mugs, T-shirts, etc.). I never knew that you owned the machines on display at Tacony. Hopefully you'll get them back. Maybe there's a vacuum-loving attorney lurking on here (or an attorney on AW.org who's got a washer collection going) who can help you out, maybe pro bono, lol!

I've never been to the Vacuum Cleaner Museum but since I have family and ties to MO, I will definitely have to check it out the next time I'm out that way. I know which machines I'll beeline to, it'll be the Vacuettes (and if you have one, the Bison!).

Sell, sell, sell to your heart's desire! Just about anything in a good vacuum shop is better than anything Walmart carries.

Thanks everybody for the well wishes. Tacony has gone to hell with the change in management. They have fired so many people at the factory it’s not even funny. There is no plant manager, no quality control engineer, not even a secretary for when people come in the door wanting to fill out an application. They are down to 70 people making vacuums. Most of their new models are made in China and shipped over here. I’m glad to be gone. I sure do like the fact that I’m going to be selling Electrolux. They have been around for more than 90 years. They’re still made in Bristol Virginia, including the motors. None of this hogwash about being made in the USA, and all of the parts being made in China. The only thing American made about a simplicity vacuum is the plastic.

On a very positive note, I have more than enough room to host a vacuum conventions again. Tacony Corporation hates vacuum collectors. They banned me from ever hosting another convention. They can’t stand vacuum collectors. That fact is actually in writing.

The new Museum of vacuums is open to every vacuum collector. Please consider stopping by at some point in the future and taking a look at 100+ years of vacuum cleaner history.

I was completely unaware of all of the drama going on at Tacony and it's great that you won't have to deal with it anymore. I hope one day you'll get your collection back, and even if you don't, starting over fresh is never a bad thing.

Here's to a new beginning and wishing you good days and big success ahead!
Cheers!!!

Best wishes with the new museum! I really enjoyed the time you gave to me, Tania and Duane in the past at the former location. Tania and I recently talked about making a trip to see you sometime this year. We will definitely look forward to seeing YOUR museum that you solely own and operate.  Goodbye Tacony and hello Lux.

After seeing you Lux Guardian Platinum, you may remember that I bought a NIB one and it is now one of my favorite vacuums.  It will be great to see the Lux lineup of products at your vacuum store.

I'm hoping there might still be a few things you will sell  smile.  There was a certain MW upright that I still remember and pine for!

So, how can we order shirts from you?  Will you have a website?  At some point, I've been wanting to get an Aerus upright (I already have an Olympia and an XXX).  I would be happy to go to you first, if you can ship.

Since Aerus owns Tristar, would it be possible for you to offer them as well, or are they restricted to door-to-door only?

So sorry Tacony kept so much of your collection. But why? If they hated vac collectors, what did they want with your collection of vintage cleaners? Was it just spite? What will they do with them? Just wondering?

Perhaps I'll get up there this summer. Would like to.

Thank you everyone for the words of encouragement. Things had really taken a turn for the worse in the past year. Tacony has part of my collection, but I’m trying to get it back this Saturday. They are being hateful out of spite. I resigned as curator of the museum, and have opened my own shop, not because I was unhappy with the museum part, but because at least 20 people per day asked me if I could fix there Kirby, or rainbow, or filter queen, or Dyson, and I had to say no. Then the company cut my pay and I knew that I could make money for myself. The quality controls were going downhill, and I found myself having to repair machines that I sold, that should not have failed. You only have to be embarrassed a couple of times for having sold a product that did not live up to what you said. No more. Anything that goes wrong with an Electrolux I can fix. You can’t get the bags in wrong. Everyone’s grandmother had one for a reason.

I have a newspaper interview this afternoon, and I am an invited guest on a radio program next Wednesday. Things are really looking up now. And I can actually, for the first time in a long time, be proud of the vacuum cleaners that I am selling. The new museum of Vacuums will be ready within a few months, and it will be bigger and better than before. I was already proud of it then, but I’ve got 10 years under my belt now. The new museum of Vacuums is going to be Fabulous.

can't wait to see the new store

I can't wait to see the new store, hopefully later this year. One thing is for sure, I will never suggest that anyone buy a Simplicity or Riccar machine again, it sounds like Tacony is sealing their own doom. Hopefully you will get your collection back, if you have some way to prove that they are yours, Tacony won't have a leg to stand on. Kind of a shame since the Prima is a really nice canister but I'm sure the quality of that will go down now as well. I know Tacony used to take quality very seriously, it sounds like now they are just interested in cutting costs. I can't wait to see the new place.

Sometimes the better choice is to strike out on your own. I was an FTE (full time employee) until the end of 2006. I've been an IT contractor ever since. My pay-rate jumped through the roof and I choose my own contracts. I don't see myself ever going back to a FTE status anytime soon.

Have you thought about a YouTube channel promoting your new business? It would be wonderful to see all your machines under one roof again.

just wanted to wish you the very best of everything. I must say that you're doing a fantastic job of moving forward with things. Not only with your own business and the museum, but also in ignoring the snarky and negative elements that pervade this forum.

Even more so, it's great to see that you're now free to be yourself again and deal with all of the vacuum brands.

selling Rainbow

I'm guessing any rainbows that are sold in that store would be used or refurbished since they insist on selling them new through in home demonstration. Although I think selling vacuums that way is a dying breed, it looks like companies like Rexair and Kirby are going to continue it for as long as they can. It sounds like Aerus is starting to realize that selling in a store or on line is a better way to go.

We finally got MY stuff back from being held hostage at Tacony. I am D I V O R C E D from that company. There is a story there. But I want only to go forward. Thank you to my many friends for coming by to help move over 600 vacuums. Now the easy part. Creating the new Museum of Vacuums.

Glad you got everything back. As you say, that door to the past is now closed for good and all, so the only direction in which to move is forward into a brighter future. Best of luck in your new venture.

Onward & Upward!

They knew better than to keep your machines. The negative publicity would’ve been a big hit to their customer base.
The worst part is that their dissolution of the museum destroyed sales opportunities that was working for them. Think of all the sales revenue generated just because someone came to see the museum and then stopped to look at the vacuums in the factory store. Incidentally, their so-called close out pricing is not as low as when the factory store was in full swing. Guess it’s all about the money, from now on.

Tom, you gave them some incredible ideas for product development. I hope you still feel good about that.

To build the New Museum is so much work. But as the Beatles so aptly put it “I get by with a little help from my friends.“ I could never have moved so many machines in 45 minutes. You are all Loved! And of course, the vacuum collectors convention in June of next year. Can’t wait.

moving vacuums

Glad you got everything back. If I could have driven, I would have definitely been there to help, but if I tried to drive, well, that would be dangerous. Hopefully we will be able to have a convention later this year as well once everything is in place, it sounds like Tacony's only goal now is to spend as little money as possible and that will be their downfall, it takes money to make money.

New Rug? No! It’s an old Hoover

dysonman1's profile picture
Our first day as an Independent vacuum cleaner dealer - Sales and Repair. I had to get this old rug clean, so of course, I used a Hoover model 70. It beats as it sweeps as it cleans. Much thanks to my good friend Daniel Paul for giving me this beautiful carpet for my brand new Wall Of Fame portion of the store.

Gorgeousness. On our first day. The beautiful Roses are from a good friend who gave a LOT of time and help. The other was from our landlords. We also made front page in the local newspaper. I have a good feeling about this

Tom,

Finally have a few extra minutes for more than a sentence or two.It is amazing what an American company can and will do when they discover China! We once had the last TV factory in US nearby. Now that and more are GONE.Looks like you will be better off than ever with new vac store/museum.All about this should be nothing but positive. Not being tied to one company will allow your customers to learn what is best for them and their home.As you know Rainbow is even better than when you sold before,Kirby & Sanitaire can be good for an upright customer and Elux/Aerus has a model for all budgets and needs including the best shampoo/polisher.I have felt that if Aerus had a basic Discovery style upright & LE style tank that was known and promoted they would easily sell the customer who would drive to the dept store to buy a $60-$200 vac.Something you can now prove. Not to mention knowing which vac to repair and which to scrap. Will you have the ancient central vacs and offer sales/installation on new ones?Great collection of small collectables at reply 52.Many of us have some of them but few have or have seen all. What is red Elux 'book' touching SweetAir can?
I happened to find a Route 66 cookbook last week from the 90s that mentions St Charles/Rolla as being known for grapes, wine, famous bar-b-q and a car museum.
Best Wishes & Good Luck.(but this may be more a matter of experience than luck)
Jimmy

I have not seen eye to eye with you. I knew you were a tortured soul. Your community loves you and your not tortured being unhappy at work. I can tell you are happy it's like your a young kid or you get to live your dream again on your terms.
Holy cow you have alot of vacuums.
You bringing in a new museum is kind of inspirational to us Americans can sell vacuums in us and be successful. You are inspiring lots of people. If I had financial soundness I'd open a vacuum shop too.

Thank you to everyone for all the kind words. We have been open now for days. I have already repaired three vacuums, and have six waiting for me for this coming week. I am so happy. And I get to sell things I believe in. Hoping that anyone traveling through Missouri, especially to Branson because we are on your way, will stop in and say hi.

Looking forward to visiting. I still haven’t seen the Guardian Platinum in person yet and that Lux Lite looks oh so familiar......

Do you think that when the smoke clears you might at least be able to sell some of the Riccar bags and replacement parts, or are you totally done with them?

Will you have room to display all of the vintage vacs at once, or do you think you’ll rotate them?

Electrolux supplies

Tom,

Will you be a point of contact to purchase Electrolux/Aerus supplies and repair parts?
Sounds like you have some repair business coming in already.

That is a great and well written article about your new shop, Tom, and a good flogging of Tacony's name to boot! I can only imagine what the Tacony execs were thinking when they seen that on the front page!

You should have no trouble getting business now, who knows maybe more people will dig up some rare vacs for the museum as well out of their basements and attics.

I was there 10 years. I could write a book. But it’s the same old story. Before I worked for Tacony I had my own vacuum shop for more than 20 years. I was a Riccar premier dealer. Not an insignificant feat.
There is a certain freedom, now, after 10 years, to be able to sell someone any vacuum cleaner I believe they should buy. Regardless of the brand. That freedom is intoxicating.

Knowing what your customer wants and being able to tell them just what they are looking for and get them something they need and can afford is a great and special trait to have, yes.

Too many people think if they mortgage their house to buy a vacuum that it will work good and clean well. They never think that spending a couple hundred or less on a vacuum how good of a job it can do. Those old Hoover Convertibles and their Eureka cohorts still amaze me at how good of a job they can do. Used one the other day on my living room rug and when I stepped in front of it to move a table over, I could feel little bits of dirt hitting my feet and legs coming out of the carpet.
