switch to motor
motor to cord

The switch could be bad. Check for continuity.

considering that the lights went out when you first wired the motor there is also the possibility that the cord could have shorted, if not the cord then the copper contacts on the cord reel. when I get home tonight I will pull apart my 89 and take a look at the wiring.

I will say that if the cord reel is bad and a parts one cannot be found your best bet will be wiring the cord directly to the switch that way you still have use of the switch. we can run through that process when the time comes.

I'd like to help but my 15 year-old companion cat died a few days ago, and my girlfriend's daughter just had a baby yesterday and I've had this little thing in my arms for an hour earlier today, oh my, lots of emotions these days!

If you don’t continue to try, you won’t succeed. Many people who give up quickly tend to give up a skill that could be acquired.
If I had to chose between skills and talent I’d take learning the skills before taking talent. Granted servicing machines isn’t rocket science, but it can be pretty close to it when one is in the process of learning the ins and outs of the mechanics.
Let us know the outcome, I’m sure it’s as simple as a shorter cord reel at this point.

The devil's in the details...

The devil is definitely in the details when it comes to wiring. I thought I had everything correct on a Silverado I was rehabbinbg last month. It turned on and ran great without any attachments, but when I hooked up a hose and a power nozzle, I discovered I had two wires reversed on the cord winder, which caused the power nozzle to run when the machine was off and vice versa.

If you don't own a multitester, you should definitely invest in one so you can detect the short and open circuits. I'm personally more fond of the older analog meters but you can pick a cheap digital model up from Harbor Freight for about the cost of a hamburger. Sometimes they will even run a coupon to get one for free with any purchase.

Just out of curiosity, did you test the motor before installing it to ensure it is indeed working?

I don't see any wire coming from the bag door switch, did you cancel them or were there any before?

This vacuum never had the pop open shut off feature .The wires are under the cord rewind cover .Wired to the motor and switch whit out a cord real. All the wires are hiden under the latch and rear cover. There is NO CONTROL AT THE BAG door thus is not a auto lux straight suction only.

Here are three pictures of the wiring in my ZB89, it should be the same as yours.

Top of the machine is upside on the pictures.

The two wires coming from the switch are easy to see. Each of them goes down to a marrette or grommet if you prefer.

On pictures 2 and 3 , I pointed at the location of each wire going from a marrette to the motor, the right one at 2 oclock and the left one at 8 oclock.

Id like to check my motor before i fire it up for the second time , reason being it shut off when it was in my ap 200 bag light came on if air flow was restricted at the hose so i put it in model 86 i think i have it wire right now but i want a voltmeter to be sure .

Post# 408235 , Reply# 28   4/17/2019 at 00:14 (1,834 days old) by Electroluxxxx (……)

At this point, it’s already wired up so plug it in and fire it up. Your connections look good and it could be a possibility that the original cord was shorted so Give it a whirl.

Your picture doesn't show the third marrette very well, does it hold one of the wires coming from the motor and the green wire going to the switch ?
