I always wondered it and I never made the connection until recently, I do think Kirby might have been named after the vacuums, because they both succ like crazy everything in their path!

Too bad the vacuum isn't star shaped!

As for whether Kirby was named after the vacuum, no he wasn't. Apparently he was named after a Nintendo lawyer named John Kirby.

The Kirby vacuum company and Kirby the video game character are not at all related in any way. The game's developer, HAL Labs, named their character after a lawyer at Nintendo of America, who happened to have the last name Kirby. The fact the two entities share the name Kirby is a pure coincidence. Plus, the Kirby game came out in 1992, while the Kirby Company was founded in 1914.
