I just discovered two oddities on my '72 Kirby Classic...

1. The wrong screw type on the bottom left-hand side of the motor housing. That should be the flat head type (135169).

2. A green wire going between the speed switch and field is partly exposed and I think that may pose risks.

A long, long time ago...

A lone screw decides it's tired of standing still. It's done nothing but hold things together for years, with no reward. When finally the opportunity presents itself, the lone screw rolls to the edge of the workbench, and leaps to the sprawling floor below, landing in a pile of junk and spare parts. Freedom!

Meanwhile, far above and away from the screw, a single obscenity is uttered by the tinkerer. With little delay, the tinkerer rummages through glass jars and little clear plastic draws, for a replacement must be found for the 'free spirit' that so selfishly abandoned its duty.

The green wire is more likely than not just a ground wire. So you just have extra motor grounding now in the form of the housing, lol

I'm sure MadMans great little story

has played out in many work bench settings. I picked up a Classic Omega on curbside put out night that had all the wrong screws on the underside and two were too long to screw all the way in! I'm thinking that the people who put it out on curb just wanted to piece it back together enough to hold it up for people like me to snap up! I hope they didn't vacuum with those screws jutting out!

From my trusty Kirby service manual that I got in the mail yesterday...

Additionally, the bottom screw I mention goes in before the motor shell housing is put back on.

I would bet that not one of my Kirbys has a full matched set of bolts!

My G5 has a brass screw from an electrical outlet holding the rear switch cover on. Ironically, I found that screw in the emptor. I have to wonder if it had been on the machine, fallen off and been vacuumed up. I make a point of periodically checking to make sure it's tight.
