What a beauty! Despite being an Electrolux fanatic, I haven't gotten to play around with one of these yet. I do say that the Discovery II looks a lot more practical to use than this beast. I wonder if Aerus still makes bags for these cleaners?

Electrolux/Aerus no longer makes bags for these models. There were 3 distinct versions to match the corresponding canisters.

I bought one NIB about 15 years ago from a Lux dealer. It was the gold/yellow one matching the Super J just like Keither's that is pictured. The performance was lackluster at best. They are loud and heavy. The brush roll is set in the housing away from the sides and front making edge and front edge cleaning not very good at all. The on/off switch is on the top of the bag housing---not the best place for it IMO. They do have effective height adjustors based on the wheel design.

The one I had I took in for some repair, (these are really difficult to work on and I read some horror stories about a spring in the motor housing popping out and damaging folks so I did NOT want to try it myself), and the ductwork for the dirt path was misaligned and gapped letting dirt/dust into the motor area. Maybe Lux quality control had issues with these models also?

One of the design flaws, (among other things), was the length of the bag. Once it was about 1/3 full the suction was compromised and continued to be as the bag filled further. Also the opening at the top was small and narrow.

Not the best of the Lux products, IMO, but fun and kitschy to have and I think they are nice looking machines too. Kind of retro looking in a clunky way. I eventually gave it to a young collector in my area. When the new designed uprights came out, again IMO, they were significantly improved and continued to be right up to the present model which I own and REALLY like.

you are ALWAYS kind and considerate. You've always asked great questions (others were dying to ask), and you share. (And, I'm only Hoover, but I'm fascinated by some of this stuff).
You're a good man, indeed.

Just found this thread, Keith. Congrats on obtaining yet another classic Electrolux USA cleaner in pristine condition and with the rare attachment set (the hose is likely an aftermarket, because the Super J & honey gold Model L's were either white with teal and gold tracers or gold with teal and white tracers). Electrolux's Automatic Uprights used the same automatic indicator light design that it had first used on your Model CA in 1961 (neither had the motor shut-off feature like the tanks).

Please post close-up photos of the literature for interest & reference. I have a users manual for it if you need one and want to swap again.

Incidentally, Jimmy mentioned in another thread that there was a commercial version of the 1363, that branch managers converted in their offices with a kit that included a black 'Commercial' name decal that covered the plain white decal, a longer cord, a larger cord cleat, and a 3-row or stiff brush roll option. Other brush roll options for it, the household 1363, and the PN-4 & PN-4A included soft bristles for delicate rugs, and one with brushes & beater bars. The commercial version was no match for the Model CB, so it wasn't marketed with the 1451 or 1451E. Knowing you, you'll find one of them to add to your collection; and like your other machines it'll be in great shape! :)

+++++++++++

I used a 1363 at my former landlord's house and found it performed just fine; even though like the LX and LXI '50s tanks it was over-engineered and rather cumbersome. Nonetheless, the models are fun to use because of their American ingenuity and world-reknown brand.

+++++++++++

I thought I'd post some eBay photos of Electrolux Corporation's second Automatic Upright model: the 1363B, which I believe had a removable duct for easier clean-out (Jimmy Martin would know for sure). Anyway, the 1363 was launched in October 1977 and succeeded by the 1363B in 1978. That model was marketed till 1980 or so. Then came the 1451 with rounded jumbo rear wheels & clean-out rod & 1451E with the relocated nozzle indicator light & clean-out panel on bottom. The line was discontinued in April 1986 with the launching of the Discovery II.

A photo of the 1451's clean-out panel. Note the rounded jumbo rear wheels.

The top text reads, "For access to clogged area, insert finger in hole and lift cover free. Refer to owners manual for complete instructions."

Text on the bottom states, "Do not run cleaner with brush or steel plate removed."

Another anecdote from Jimmy is that the Automatic Upright serial numbers were coded in dots on the base. They may have also been on a decal like the tanks'.

Another difference in the 1363B is that its handle was secured with 5 screws instead of 4 for durability.

@ Paul

Thanks for sharing this Info Paul - I recently acquired the matching honey golden braided hose to use with the attachment converter set 😊 The hose used in the first post was borrowed from my bronze Model G .

That's an interesting tan G hose! I've never seen one like it. All the ones that I've come across have had closely spaced pairs of gold stripes. See photo of a Model G that just appeared on eBay.

Keither, I had no clue these uprights ever had an attachment option. I only ever experienced one of these uprights...same color as yours in a Unitarian Church...I was helping clean up after a wedding ceremony and reception my friends family used for the festivities. It was a low budget wedding so we had to do the food prep, cleanup, floral and everything and my friends knew I was willing to help anyway I could. There was vacuuming to do at the end to leave the place fresh of course and I found one of these in a closet and was very excited to give it a whirl. I was maybe 17 at the time. I did find the bag design quite unusual. It seemed to be a good fit for the building it was serving which was a giant old mansion converted to a Unitarian fellowship hall in NJ....the large sanctuary room was an add on to the old mansion using the backyard space and was fully carpeted. The unit really has a very heavy duty durable commercial feel to it. I didn’t think it was terribly noisy. I can’t imagine that a lot of people would have had these in their homes. Using the combination rug and floor tool must be cumbersome with that upright attached to the hose. But what a wonderful find...a complete set and thanks for sharing for those of us Electrolux enthusiasts!

Hey Jo ...you are probably like the 4th person who has said to me that they never knew these attachment kits existed for this machine! I'm so stoked that I'm able to share my collection with you and the group - and to share something that's both vintage and new to a fellow collector!

Of course you have the all original attachment set and hose for that machine. You are an amazing collector. That genre of Electrolux was one of my favorites. Pretty much bought all of them new. The Super J, the gold L and the gold B8. Unfortunately those hoses didn’t hold up well but they were beautiful. I later found that Lux upright new in the box and cobbled together an attachment set although not original. Good luck finding bags, they are rarer than hens teeth. Found a beautiful Super J and still have the B8 I bought new in Chicago. Getting it ready to do some work for me here on the tile and grout.

I generally don’t go in for such bling, but they did it just right.

Fred thanks so much for the kind words and feedback! I've learned from the best of the best :-) Collecting can be both fun and at times daunting - But it has paid off in ways I wouldn't have imagined. I grew up in Delray Beach Fla, and Electrolux all but blanketed the area where we lived. Every other household had either a 1205, or a Super J. My Scout leader had both. My aunt owned a CB ( Turquoise ) and the 1205. I adored the Super J when I was a kid. Electrolux was and still is a magnificent product. Your Super J looks really, really nice! It looks new! The fabric hoses well are hit or miss ya know. Thanks again and will sys ( see ya soon )

Delray Beach, Florida

Keither, What a great town...one of my favorite places to visit and vacation. We found about it through an unfortunate event, my favorite Aunt who was my Godmother passed away on vacation there when I was 15 and my Father, after visiting to claim her, said it was a really nice place...we went for a vacation a few years soon after to escape the cold long winters in NJ and have always revisited whenever we’ve been back to the area, even driving over from Naples for the day. With so many snowbirds or NY/NJ retirees filling the area it’s no wonder the Electrolux was popular. It had and still has a strong following in the NYC tri state area and all of New England. Perhaps because the area is so old and Electrolux passed through the generations there and also the factory which used to be in Old Greenwich CT and offices in NYC in the earlier days then I think Stamford, CT for a while, and all those branches, employed many, many people and the small town residents tend to have a desire to want to support their home town businesses as well. Towns are small in the area and almost every town had an Electrolux branch. Even I ended up knowing the local Electrolux salesman’s (who sold my Mom hers when I was 3) daughter in high school. It seemed everyone in the school knew her Dad was the Electrolux salesman.

Out here in Dallas, TX where I live now, I don’t find as many Aerus/Electrolux’s but more than I was thinking there were and a good portion of people do know it when they see it. Younger generations are kind of clueless, but my partners niece, a native to the area, when she saw my Silverado, said “that looks like one of those vacuums door to door salesman would sell.” I told her that’s exactly what it is and that it’s 37 years old and really good.

Is it me or does this vacuum look like a singer and a Regina floor polisher.
Interesting vacuum.
Thanks again
