I was given this 518 and it’s seen better days. I plan on restoring it to original look. Luckily it isn’t missing anything and the motor sounds good. I’ll post pics along the way.
What is the correct bag replacement? Too bad you can’t find the original Kirby bags.

Dustin,
The original bag color for the model 518 (1958-59) was gray, speckled and with a large Kirby logo on the front of it. But as to a genuine replacement shake-out bag, yes, it will be black in color now. So good luck on finding an original gray bag! The cord I see here isn't original, either: the original one was gray with red male and female plug ends. What I see here is actually meant for a Classic III. ~Ben |

Poor Kirby looks like it spent a lot of time outdoors and got oxidized. If it's really important to get the gray bag, they do come up on eBay sometimes, but you can also ask around old Kirby dealers and mom and pop vacuum shops. The more cluttered and cramped the better, sometimes the owners are collectors themselves, or never throw anything out and they might have the part collecting cobwebs.
There's a one where I live that was built onto an old Sears Craftsman kit house and according to the owners the entire upstairs of what is the original house is his parts inventory and he throws any irreparable vacuums in the attic as well as parts that do not sell after so many years on his sales floor or get used in repairs. Those Kirbys are tough to find original though as vacuum shops loved to butcher them with the new Kirby replacement parts of the time, which were kind of ugly colors, and then they also ripped the model tag off. |

Well good sir I'll show you the bag your vacuum should have came with and the bag Kirby sales for replacement today.
First off all vacuums prior to Kirby 562 we're top fill bags. The shakeout bag appeared in a sanatronic version and was first year off shakeout with the sani pocket and the bag top was sewn on used wire hanger bracket. So when I you ask Kirby bag for the machine the black top fill Kirby bag is what Kirby sales now for replacement. Pic 1 I believe it's not exactly like the bag but the k on 518 I think goes for 4-5 inches towards top of the bag. Bag 2 is 562-classic sanatronic bag in black. 3rd is bag replacement bag sold by Kirby it's 505-561. You put a clamp on top and it's top fill. The sanatronic bags have a pocket and top is sewn shut. So there's a little history lesson but I hope this clears it up for you. Les |
