I have a chance to buy a Royal vacuum model 606, can someone tell me if its worth getting? Also, what year were they made? Thank you.

Karl,

The 606 was produced from around 1965 up to 1987.

Depending on when it was made, it could have a 350 watt motor (before 1971), a 400 watt motor (1971 to early 1975), a 3.0 amp motor (1975-1985), a 4.5 amp motor (spring/summer 1985) or a 5.4 amp motor (1985-1987).

If it has a 3-wire cord that is the typical 35 foot length, it will have been produced from 1973 to 1987, but if it has the extra-long 50 foot cord, then it will be a 1985 to 1987 model.

The very last 606s (1986-1987) will have a gray shake-out or long zipper bag (instead of dark blue).

Karl,

The pictures you show us suggest this 606 lies in the 1971-75 timeframe. If it has the 3-wire cord (with the ground prong on the male plug), it will be from the 1973-75 timeframe.

And yes, it is worth buying since these commercial-grade cleaners are getting very scarce now and this one appears to be in great condition for its age.

I'd buy it. Usually models with this bag are in bad shape.
The older royal commercial vacuum is even more rare.
It's a really solid vacuum. Buy it.

If you buy it and you don't like it, you could always shine it up and sell it to someone else.

Great, I'm going to get it, the price is right also. ($20) Thanks for the help.

At that price I would snap it up in a hurry and not even think twice. Some Mother's Mag and some elbow grease will make it look beautiful, and if it's in good running condition you will have a great cleaner that you will enjoy using. Here's mine.

If in the end you don't get this 606, then hopefully someone else here will, like Les (LesinUtah) or Kelton (rivstg1).

The same Sylvania 1650 bulb or ba15d led lights fit it. There was a thread a couple weeks ago and the bulbs I mentioned all fit. Some people found at hardware store. FYI

Karl,

What is the serial number on this machine, please?

If it is a 1970 or older machine, the nameplate will be found riveted on the bottom of the motor housing.

But if it is 1971 or newer (which I assume is most likely), then the nameplate will be in the form of a decal affixed to the back of the nozzle casting.

Example of serial number: 37J-A-79185. The first digit in the date code is the year of the decade (3 being 1973), the second is the decade (1970s), and the third (the letter) is the month (September),

Karl,

Your 606 was built in September 1971... so the cord would have not have had the third (grounding) prong yet.

Started taking the 606 apart today, washed out the bag, very dirty. The brushes need to be replaced soon, I could only get one of the caps off for the brushes, the plastic cap is falling apart. I need new plastic caps for the brushes and new brushes. Also, I put oil in the bearing ports.

I also need a new belt, the paper work that came with the vacuum says part # 43260 A. I have a Royal belt part # 672260 001 that I got for my other Royal vacuum, will that one be ok?

Karl,

You will have to search around for some of these obsolete parts for your machine, but they are:

1-672021-000 = carbon brush assembly
1-672103-000 = brush holder screw assembly
1-801014-000 = set screw, brush holder
1-801019-000 = brush holder
1-801034-000 = brush holder protector cap
3-672105-000 = complete carbon brush assembly with above parts

Karl,

Glad to hear you really like your 606!

Vac Parts Plus is one place to try for such obsolete parts:
vacpartsplusstore.com/catalog/in...

The rest, you will need to obtain from donor Royals 1994 and older.

And here's a link to the original belt (1-043260-001) as intended for use with your machine:

Karl,

No... I've read that it would eat into the sleeve bearings of the older-style brush rolls.

Here's a post of a Royal 903 that had a bad brush roll due to the incorrect belt:

Hey

Start at 200 grit work up 400 800 up to 2000 wet sand. You have to work up on the grit go over evenly to get out scratch wet sand on 2000 is to get mirror finish.
