Scott,
Welcome! Your Electro-Hygiene model 285 cleaner was built in October of 1973 going by its serial number. The original bag from the factory was a red twill bag which said on the front, of course, ELECTRO-HYGIENE. The 285 was originally introduced in 1955, to replace the straight-suction model 2-230. The detachable, pigtail-design cord was a hallmark of Electro-Hygiene uprights since their first model, the 80, in 1934. It allowed you to remove the handle and cord together for portable operation, with a different handle and cord for that occasion. As to what it may be worth, in this condition I would suggest to start off listing it for about $10. ~Ben This post was last edited 12/11/2018 at 18:33 |

Here's a picture of my Electro-Hygiene 285 from 1979, so you can see the proper bag as Ben described it.
And Ben, the pigtail connection started with the next model, the 94. The model 80 was direct wired, had an inline switch, and the cord hung on a hook (like a Kirby) instead of going through the handle. To put it in hand vac mode, you simply switched the handle and bag, unhooked the cord from the long handle, and hooked it to the short one. Jeff
