I found this gem today hiding in the back of a closet. I got it for $3. I could hardly believe it. It runs like new, but needs a new brush roll. I’m thinking it’s from the early 1990s. Are brushrolls still available? Would this one need to be oiled?

Tim,

This 882T was built in April 1991 according to the serial number, which would mean it would take the square-ended brush roll assembly. And speaking of that, you will have to do quite a bit of looking around for one (part no. 2-059721-000 or 2-159273-000) as Royal/TTI hadn't made them for about a decade now. And also, a replacement belt for this model is part no. 1-044260-001.

About oiling the rear bearing in the motor: yes, it is recommended to do so about each year for general household use (if used commercially, then oil more frequently). Use only medium-grade (SAE 30) oil (don't use lightweight or sewing machine oil), and take care not to overfill the oil wick.

Thanks for the information on this vacuum. I oiled it. I also took the brushroll out and cleaned it and lunricated the ends. The bristles are soft, but it does seem to work better now that it’s been cleaned. You’re right it does have square metal ends. There is also not an adjustment on it. This Royal seems to be a little harder to push than the others I have used. It doesn’t pull itself some seem to do. I do think it will be a fun machine to use. Hopefully, someone can point me in the right direction for a brushroll.
Tim

Tim,

Actually, the Royal brush roll has three positions. If the bristles are worn down on the first position (1), move both ends of the roll to position 2. If worn down on 2, then move ends to position 3. After that, it's time to replace it.

To do this, according to an owner's manual, it states:
"To adjust the height of the brush, pull the brush out of the spring holders located in the ends of the nozzle. Slip the belt over the revolving brush before brush is put into new position. When brush is new, place the square end bearing adjustment so that the number 1 stamped on the bearing adjustment is visible. After the bristles have become further worn or where heavy brushing is desired, place the square end bearing adjustments in the spring holders so that the number 2 is visible. After the bristles have become further worn and it is desirable to have further adjustment, place the bearing adjustment so that the number 3 is visible. Arrows on brush roll and nozzle guard must match."

Stiffeners

Would this model Royal ever had a brush roll with stiffeners? Could I use a brush with stiffeners?

Tim,

In 1991, this model initially had the single-bristle brush roll (2-159273-000), but yes, you can change that to a double-bristle type with stiffeners.

For this model, you can use part no. 2-088221-000, 2-188273-000 or 2-675227-000.
