I have just had medium pile carpet fitted to the first floor of my house (no carpet on the ground floor).

The carpet won’t get particularly dirty but, I need a vacuum that will groom the pile well to stop it looking down trodden. Max budget is £200, but preferably less, it must be new and, I have no preference as to bagged or bagless.

Any recommendations welcomed!

Ever thought about a carpet rake? It's meant to fluff carpet back up after shampooing it, but can use it before or after vacuuming to loosen the carpet and train it to stand back up. Not sure if they have them overseas but it's a fairly cheap and useful tool.

A good upright like a Kirby or Royal would really groom that carpet, or whatever versions similar they sell on your side of the pond. I'm also partial to the earlier Royal power tanks with the power head over here as they do about the same as the Compact as I have both.

Anything with a motorized brushroll should do a decent job keeping the carpet groomed nicely. A Tristar, Aerus/Electrolux, or Royal would be very difficult to find over in the UK, plus you'd have issues with the voltage being different.

Kirby has been sold in the UK but you'd be spending much more than 200 on a new one. A Sebo Felix would be about 239 on the Amazon UK site, it's over budget but they're excellent cleaners. I know Orecks have been sold over in the UK in the past, I'm not sure if they're still sold over there but they tend to be excellent groomers. They aren't great deep cleaners but that doesn't sound like it would be an issue for you.
