A surprise gift! It is a 1982 model, and with the rare 2 amp motor!

I thought they were all two amps. I have two of them and I think they are both 2 amps. I know the Dirt Devil branded ones have higher amp motors.

Kenny,

Most of the later ones were 1.8 amps, which is rather close. Royal seemed to have a way with numbers like these on some of these ratings plates.

I have 2 of these vacs. I'm not sure the amps. I have a bunch of handvacs. I have a few older ones. The 3 similar to Ben's are 1.8 or 2 amps. The third has a red and black back and black cord.
The similar 501 is very impressive for a little vacuum.

Les,

The older 501s you have that were made before 1982 were rated either 175 watts (before 1975) or 1.2 amps (1975-82).

The black and red one is possibly the oldest in your collection (probably a model 157 from 1949-53, or a 501 from 1953-55). However, there was also a variation of the commercial-duty model 3-501 (3-wire cord) called the "Turbo Groomer" for grooming horses which had a red bag with a horse pattern on it, and a black motor body and handle grip.

Dang, I thought they were all 2 amps as well ( for some reason, I guess from noticing my Dirt Devil 103 model is that rating), well, I went and checked my Prince models .... One was 1.2 amps & the other is 1.8! Surprise surprise

Kelton,

As if that wasn't confusing enough, some of the very last 1.2-amp Royal 501s from 1980-82 actually had nameplates which said 1.5 amps!
