Displays!

Great pictures Tom. It sure brings back nice memories of my childhood and the department stores in Indianapolis. Even though we vac collectors know how wonderful Hoover used to be it is so much fun to see those great machines. Makes me want to go to my parents and get their Hoover Dail-a-matic out and use!

Sorry that these are not the best quality photos. These were scanned from the original IBAISAIC issues from Hoover. I just thought that this might give some folks that are planning to attend this years VCCC convention some ideas or inspiration regarding the display contest. A good idea for the display contest would also be to show photos of your home displays or scrapbooks of your Hoover machines. I really think that the members are going to be creative and come up with some great table top displays. The tables by the way are 8 foot heavy wooden tables and there are 50 for us all to use. There will be no electric hook up at the tables nor are we allowed to drill holes or pound in nails so keep that in mind. However, I have seen the prizes. Any vacuum collector would love to win one of the vacuums that are being furnished by the Hoover Historical Center. Just wait until you see them! I hope you liked these photos.

thanks Tom for the Photos and the inspiration. It's great to know
that the tables are there for us to use. 8 ft is a great length but how wide or deep are they??? Will we be able to
use any electric? ???? The wheels are turning!
thanks
Norm

Tom....

Thanks for sharing. I'm curious to learn what the story is behind that huge mass of Convertibles. Do you have more details?

Wow....How cool are they....

I just stared in awe. Coming from someone who unfortunatly missed the BIG department store era almost completly, I adored that you took the time to scan these. What a cool way to show how people can do their display's.

I used to marvel at the one store's display's that I can remember with any clarity. When J.W.Knapp's our big dept. store here in Lansing finally moved to the mall from their flagship in 1979, they thru 1982 area used to at least once a year have a huge window display with all the Hoovers. Now the Knapp's is Penny's. My mom used to position me in my stroller no less towards the window, while she sat on the bench and balanced her Checkbook.

I stared silently of course until she moved me. So she told me tonight when I asked her if I was wrong about the display. She part timed during the mid 1970's thru 1980 for Knapp's. She said they usually did one in the spring, and then one thru November without fail.... Christmas themed of course...

Thanks Tom for the great pic's.... Kinda makes me wish i was born earlier. I would have slept in the middle of all those Hoover's in post42364...

lets see...

If I can date these...

the top pic is 1973 or so, thats a U4003 and U4005 Convertible in that pic. The DAM's in the front are probably 1157/1178 and 1149

pic #2's mass of Convertibles might be about 1971 or so. I can make out a 707 Convertible on the middle left.

Pic#3 is also 1971, thats an 1178 DAM powerdrive, with a 1030 and 1076 Convertible. Thats kinda what the vacuum display at Kmart looked like in the 70's

Pic#4 could be as old as 1969. I don't see a powerdrive DAM, and from the shades of the Convertibles those could be a 589 and 719.

Pic#5 could also be 1969. I'd love a Hoover any time, and I love that they used a 344 Commercial Convertible in this pic.

Pic #6 next to that is 1973, and the two men are with a U4005 Convertible

Pic #7 is 1971 again with the two ladies.

Pic #8 is from the middle 60's. The Convertible has a large medallion.

GAWD what I wouldn't give to walk into a store today and see a vacuum section that looks like any of the above...

When I went to work as a Eureka rep in 1979. I personally knew the Hoover rep. here in Columbus. All reps for both brands would work the "major" 3 day weekend warehouse sales for our local F&R Lazarus. Both Hoover and Eureka would have boxes
of our 34.95/39.95 uprights in stacks on the warehouse floor
then we would stand and just hand boxes of new upright vacuums to shoppers. Sometimes stepping over to the line up along the wall and compare brands and models. It was one amazing
free for all. It was unbelievable, as we (Eureka and Hoover) would sometimes sell 2 or 3 hundred vacuums in a 3 day weekend !
We would even be asked to go to Cincy for the day on a sat. of a big warehouse sell. Then spend the day doing the same thing. It wan't even selling most of the time. We did turn
the numbers and dollars! It was great fun, as people would
actually talk to you and ask questions.
It must have been all of that nylon and shag carpet still
needing a good upright, rather then a stright suction cannister! LOL!

I too noticed the commercial Convertible in the Valentines Day display. Could they be promoting the commercial model for home use?

The Commercial- a theroy

Hey Guys

Peresumably a fair number of customers would have been looking to replace dump bag cleaners at this time- maybe showing the commercial was designed to attract those customers who wanted to stick with what they were used to??

Commercial model for home use?

YES!!!
Seamus and David, it was quietly offered for home use, as an alternative to the standard Convertible and DAM models. I remember a classmate when I was in grade school who's LARGE family had one, and also a few that were sold to replace older cloth bag cleaners as well.
913's and 918's were also promoted for home use, but more for a sweep your driveway or front walk kind of thing.

The Commercial models were not widely available in stores per se, but they could be ordered special by any dealer.
