I needed a little 'pick me up' last night to help cheer me up, so I decided to use a machine I haven't used in years. Hard to believe it's 20 years old already. It's a Dyson DC02 ReCyclone - just a few hundred were made. They were built out of scrap plastic from all the prototypes of Dyson machines at the factory. After grinding the plastic, it was colored green, the instruction manuals were printed on recycled paper, and the cleaner was not shipped in a box (shipped in a burlap reusable bag).

The things I had to do to get this machine....

Mr. Dyson sent it to me directly from the headquarters in England many years ago.

They claimed it was "The World's First Recycled Vacuum Cleaner". It certainly IS powerful - with it's 240 volt motor and 290 air watts of airflow. The turbo brush won't slow down, even on high pile carpet. I used the Volt cordless Power Nozzle (made for central vacs) with it and I was (again) amazed at the amount of dirt it removed.

And, it cheered me up.

Love the graceful handle design and the wand holder.

As always, I've said "Goodbye" to the filthy, old, nasty, stinking, clogging bag. And "Hello" to the Dual Cyclone.

View from the front. It's a beautiful work of engineering art.

That reminds me of the Fantom canisters we got in the 90s, man those were horrible machines.

Glad to see this in the collectors hands though!

The only thing the Dyson canister and the Fantom Lightning share is body shape. Dyson used a much larger cyclone, as well as electrostatic filtration before the motor. The Fantom and the Dyson are worlds away from each other - especially in suction power and filtration ability.

Very cool! But I'd have it on a sturdy shelf! These plastics old Dysons were made from do not age well and get brittle. One small bump and it cracks. I have a DC07 that got damaged in shipping and the front hood is nearly confetti.

Cool model ! I didn't know there was a vacuum cleaner made of recycled material.

That one is a real collector piece. I'm pretty sure I've actually used that one.

Physical similarity is the only thing it shares with the Lightning, the Lightning was pretty junky and I’m lucky to have several working ones.

The Fantom Thunder (well 11 amp domestic) and Kenmore versions were their best machines.
