Walked into an oreck store.. saw more Riccar machines on the floor than actual orecks?? Saw cordless Supralites and R10s supralites, then saw the gray R30 brilliance along with the chocolate brown Retriever Brilliance And the teal R40 Radiance... just struck me as odd.. is tacony taking over oreck? Haha 🤪🤪

I sure hope so

I think Tacony would be a way better parent company than TTI. TTI seems to love throwing out plasticrap and generic designs. I will have to check my local Oreck store because my closest vacuum shop has some rude and disrespectful check out people who apparently no zero about anything and are total jerks. Anyway that's another story for a different day but I hope my Oreck store has Tacony machines because I can't get them anywhere else. I have a Synergy but it will not be serviced at the other vacuum shop ever again.

@Hoover78
Technically they're not supposed to do that.
I know aren't worth crap used to scold us if we even had a Hoover product in the store. Miele was okay at the time.

But TTI had a major "reorganization " dismissed a bunch of IT staff.
So my understanding right now Oreck stores kind of have a free-for-all situation ,until TTI figures out what it's right and left hand are doing.

Some Oreck stores changed over to "multi-line stores " which is a different situation but basically those stores pay more for Oreck product.

I think now it's gotten to a point where the only way the remaining Oreck stores can survive is by being multi-line stores. Before closing, a nearby Oreck store was selling Miele. I've noticed a change in the quality (or lack thereof) of Oreck vacuums since TTI took over. Cords seem cheaper, the plastics used flimsier. I'm surprised an Oreck store would take in Riccar though. The Supralite is in direct competition with Oreck's 8 lb. upright. Definitely better build quality than their Magnesium line though.

Tom Oreck got the Oreck stores for himself when Oreck went bankrupt and TTI took over. There are Riccar 8 pound uprights labeled as Oreck, but just sold in Oreck stores - not on-line. Just like there are Riccar 8 pound uprights (corded and cordless) labeled and sold as Aerus Electrolux. It's called Private Labeling.

I had a boss who swore by Oreck.

gottahaveahoove's profile picture
We also had a family friend who spent a pretty penny on one as well.
I remember DAVE Oreck on TV boasting his 8lb vacuum.
Things have changed. I believe DAVE Oreck was able to salvage a lot. WE don't see DAVE Oreck anymore. Did he pass away? Is he quietly in the background? What happened to DAVE Oreck?

David Oreck is still alive and well, too busy playing around with his vintage World War II airplanes to worry about the vacuum company he made so famous. Really a shame....

I remember the commercials as well.

I always wanted to see the canister model with wide but not very deep, 'L' shaped power nozzle, a long hose, and the ridiculously bulky canister.  They must not have sold many of those.  I never see them.  I think that pn can still be bought new under another name.  It would be a fun toy.

It's not just Riccar

Some of the Oreck stores in my state sells Simplicity. My local Oreck store was going to sell Simplicity but there's like a rule where if a dealer has already taken Simplicity like us, they would have no choice but to sell Riccar instead and so they did.

Another thing from my local Oreck store is not only they sell Oreck and Riccar but they also sell other TTI brands like Hoover, Dirt Devil, and Royal. They also sell Miele and they just recently started selling Bissell shortly after we quit selling Bissell.

Sanitaire now has lightweight uprights that are also privately labeled from Tacony.

Wow! Pretty soon tacony could take over the whole vacuum mkt

Which is a good thing, they do have great quality products... sorta reminiscent of when Hoover was a real vacuum mfr.. and made rebadged products for sears, jcpenney, Montgomery Wards, etc....

@Hoover78 I seriously doubt that . Especially considering how poorly run Tacony is right now. Their market share is not even a measurable percent of the market right now. Maybe if they change things up and get an entirely new staff it's possible or sell their company to a bigger company that knows how to Drive.

I watched David Oreck's commercials on the Oreck Vacuum for many years and I grew up watching Ron Popeil's Veg-O-Matic commercials.
These were men of great success and I believe knew when it was time to move on from these enterprises. I do have great respect for them and others like them and the company’s women started and own.

Y'all know Oreck filed for bankruptcy and the Chinese bought them - don't ya? That's not the way a 'great businessman' ends his businesses. What was most interesting was WHOM the Oreck Company owned money. The US Government was at the top. Taxes people - taxes.

Remember

Bankruptcy is just a business procedure, it doesn't mean failure.

Millions of people do it every year, and they are better off for it.

Think of all the companies that have gone into bankruptcy at some point in their history.  Chrysler, GM, Texaco, and Apple are just a few.  Even GE could well be headed for bankruptcy.

@ dysonman1:

To quote the immortal words of Leona Helmsley:
"only the little people pay taxes".

I had the misfortune to be an "Oreck Store" manager during their "writing on the wall" period, when the beginning of their decline was imminent. It struck me kinda funny at the time that they were more concerned about my daily sales totals of cleaning products, bags, belts, filters and booked service appointments than they were about how many vacuums I sold. I think "Big Dave" Oreck knew from day 1 that his empire would eventually crumble.

I regret that I have nothing positive to say about my experience with the Oreck Corporation, except that I was just "passing through" and it was a job to help me in my transition. The Oreck's had a stronghold in Houston at one time. That's when "Little Tom" Oreck lived in a wonderful high rise called The Houstonian, took his upper echelons of management out to cigar bars after dinner at Tony's. My only takeaway from managing Oreck stores, is that they all had that pukey emerald green carpet! Oreck must've bought a carton full of it from a railroad salvage yard because every store had it!

@Hoover78 That is off subject.

Or even consider looking at my YouTube channel :D

Back to the subject of Oreck stores. At the end of the day TTI has saved Oreck and Hoover from Extinction. I have little complaints about what TTI has done.

“...Think of all the companies that have gone into bankruptcy at some point in their history. Chrysler, GM, Texaco, and Apple are just a few. Even GE could well be headed for bankruptcy.”

I just wanted to make one correction to you statement.. Apple has never filed for bankruptcy of any kind, ever. They came close in their financial strains of 1997 but never ever filed for bankruptcy and have always remained a solvent company who has always paid all their bills and taxes.

I just wanted to mention that as our family has had stock in Apple for many years and we follow the business side of Apple very closely. Now Apple is worth One Trillion Dollars.

So yes, Microsoft invested 150 million back in 1997, but to that point Apple had paid every bill and not defaulted on one penny of taxes owed. I commend Steve Jobs for those years (until his death) he took Apple from “Almost” bankrupt to what it is today.. as they say “Almost only counts in horseshoes”

No shade, no disrespect to anyone, especially you Greg.. I just wanted to clarify.

Thanks, Patrick

In defense of Oreck

I don't believe the empire was close to crashing until after Hurricane Katrina. The destruction in NOLA and the move to TN was very costly to the company, where they had difficulty recovering. This was a great contributor to the bankruptcy, not so much mismanagement or slumping sales.

Cookeville. I was at TTI this August. I saw the realty sign. To think that NOTHING will be in Ohio anymore. It's awful.
It looks like TTI is 'spinning' right now.

NORTH CANTON is actually a very nice area.

gottahaveahoove's profile picture
It is 'Downtown, U.S.A.". The Hoover Company was massive..............and drove the economy of the area. 3,000 employees. (had its own police, fire dept as well as its own 'hospital'. It was something, indeed. I walk downtown there every year. I've never had any problems, whatsoever. But, I know that there are problems everywhere.
