I was researching some Miele canisters and uprights ( b/c I just got one of each , cheap! woohoo) and while on Consumer Reports sight ( member) I was surprised to read of Electrolux's reliability problems ...from consumers like me ( member who fills out surveys' on products)...NOT just their test/opinions ( which are questionable to many ). Miele's canister reliability was super....their uprights weren't good ( the worst at 23% failure rate by 3rd year of ownership). Here is what was there...

"Miele and Panasonic canister vacuums are among the more reliable brands, while Electrolux canisters are among the less reliable. In fact, due to its high estimated breakage rate and status as a less reliable brand, Electrolux canisters can't be recommended by Consumer Reports at this time. These conclusions are based on our breakage rate estimates by the 3rd year of ownership, gathered from 6,094 subscribers who purchased a new canister between 2011 and 2016. Differences of fewer than 7 percentage points aren’t meaningful. Models within a brand may vary, and changes in design or manufacturer may affect future reliability. Still, choosing a brand with a lower estimated breakage rate can improve your odds of getting a dependable model.

Due to a change in our methodology, our reliability estimates are not comparable to previous years. In the past, our estimates were based on instances of repair or serious problems. We now base our reliability estimates on the rate at which vacuums break or stop working as well as they should. This change generally results in higher estimates than they have been in years’ past.

on uprights, they have Shark at 11% and Kirby at 12% ...the later which shocks me.... there's just really anything that goes wrong with them.... has to be improper use/set up of brush roller etc....I read in reviews some people complaining about going through belts like crazy...smelly (belts) etc.

I don't think you'll see an argument from anybody on here about Consumer Reports being full of shit.

I think only 🗣️ NPCs rely on consumer reports

The "Electrolux" machines that communist reports is speaking of, are actually EurekaLux pieces of crap. Not Aerus.

I don't believe anything that rag has to say. There's no 'truth' there.

I think when it comes to Communist Reports & their ratings & reliability records, you have to take everything they say with a grain of salt & use your own judgment.

They LOVE to recommend Kenmore canister vacuums, put them at the top of the list & have a "best buy" model. Sure, they do clean well, BUT what they fail to disclose is that Kenmore's quality is subpar compared to other brands. You will likely only get 10 years from that vacuum before it dies. Same with the Hoover Windtunnel Anniversary canister they rated a "best buy" a few years ago....sure, it cleans well, & LOOKS like a Miele-style vacuum, but it will be in a landfill in 5 years time.

They have also gotten their ratings wrong a few times, & shown bias & favor towards certain brands. Like how they rated the Miele Callisto S5280 as being only "good" in carpet cleaning, & preferring other brands. All the while, they fail to mention it was the earlier version with the compact SEB217 powerhead that was tested....had they bought the later version with the full size SEB228 powerhead to give it a fair chance in their tests, it would have had the same cleaning results as the Kenmore canisters they love so much. And they have never been fair to the D T D brands, like Aerus, Kirby, Rainbow & TriStar....even when they do perform well & achieve the same ratings as other brands they favor, they STILL knock them for some reason.

THeir testing results may be suspect ...but the survey supplied reliability results surely aren’t doctored...they are compilations if we who submit our experiences , gotta have some relevance ?

@Rivstg1 They only survey people who buy Consumer Reports. A relatively small niche market.

They've also been known to take bribes.

True,

But a substantial sub set of the buying population ...and seemingly, those numbers can be exotrapolated to he larger overall buying public’s experience. Of 20% of buyers within that group have problems worth a certain brand, it’s very reasonable that 20% of the remaining public who made the same purchase but didn’t submit data for the survey had the same problems. I’m not a big fan of CR, but I am trying to be intellectually honest with considering brand/model reliability

Electrolux and Kenmore

The only vacuums worth buying that are made by the european Electrolux company now are the canisters in the Ultra One series. Those are good quality machines. It will be interesting to see if the Kenmore vacuums are even around in the future since Sears has filed for bankruptcy and many stores are closing.

Does Electrolux Group still own The Eureka Company through Midea Group, or is Midea being outsourced for manufacturing Electrolux and Aerus products (except the Tacony rebadged "Lite by Aerus" vacuum cleaners)?

______

"Eureka-lux" is a term that can be applied to both AB Electrolux AND Aerus products since 2004 when the former was able to reuse its name in North America for its vacuum cleaners. True, Aerus's vacuum cleaners were designed in the early 1980s by Electrolux Canada, except for the Lux Guardian Ultra & Lux Guardian Platinum, which were designed by Lux International; but since 2004 they have been manufactured by The Eureka Company in the U.S. & Mexico. The Bristol factory is now used only for assembly and distribution.
