When stopping at my local Habitat Restore for a second time that week to go back for some weatherseal foam I seen there on the previous trip to fix my bathroom fan's vent cover from vibrating so loudly, what should greet me in the housewares aisle but this! I am so glad that Restore has a fixed price for vacuum cleaners ($20) that they never deviate from, because I am sure if this was at Goodwill someone would have put $60 on it just because it's chrome.

So I immediately picked it up and home with me it went! I've seen some of these Convertible-styled Eurekas scattered about on photos on this website before, but never seen any in chrome! I just couldn't believe how good of a shape it's in. I seen it had a local vacuum repair shop's sticker on it, but the font on the sticker looked like it was from the 1970's at least so I know it's been awhile since it was serviced.

If anyone knows what year it came out, that would be much appreciated. I have researched that it predates Eureka's serial number date code system, and I think it predates injection mold date wheels also.

Photos will follow this post and were taken on 10/29/2018 at 3:02 pm and 10/30/2018 at 3:16am-3:25am.

Here's a closeup of the finish. You can see the streak marks where the Restore just quickly wiped it down with a rag, but a quick hand-polish with some Flitz should take care of those marks quickly. Even through the dirt, the shine is incredible!

Here's a closeup of the inspection stamp on the belt cover. I am not sure if the belt cover is original or is a replacement part. I am also not sure if that number is the inspection year, or an employee number.

Assuming that this was not done when Restore tested the vacuum (from dry rot), this is most likely why the vacuum was donated. Man, I've never seen a belt this torn up that is still in one piece without snapping...it looks like a shark ate it!

There's a melted spot above the belt here, does anyone know if that is normal on these vacuums or was that just from the belt being too loose?

Here's a shot of the vacuum shop's repair tag. There is an older tag under this one and both of them have the adhesive totally dry-rotted, so they have been on here quite a long time. I know of this vacuum shop personally (but haven't been in it since 2003-ish) and they are still in business and doing very well for themselves with great reviews.

That's the end of the pics, enjoy! I will certainly be enjoying this sweeper!

Sweet Eureka!

That “melted spot” is normal. In fact, it has not even been melted! That is a feature of the design; even my relatively modern S661 has it. That track serves as a guide fitting the belt. Look closely, and you will actually see the little rectangular outline around it from the mold.

Eureka 2364 A

dirtmaster37's profile picture
This machine was a promotional model, that was offered alongside of the new 1976-77 Moss Green, Continental Eureka's, (the hood on your machine was referred to as that, the Continental series). The Eureka to the extreme left, was the TOL for that whole range!! The one like yours the 2364A, was a IIRC a two or MAYBE three model promotional series.. I have the dealer brochure.. But it's to home so...

I learned of this "sub-series, vac-store exclusive", from a former Eureka dealer, so I'm going on another's word here. OTOH, I have that brochure that pretty much solidifies ones recollection so. BUT I have also seen this model in a Aldens, or MAYBE Spiegel catalog too. So?

The original bag, as you see in the pic, would have been the floral blue bag, also found on the 1458A series.

I have at home the 1976-77 Eureka "The Money Makers" brochure featuring the whole range of models. Along with the full line of green models, there was also this unit in again that sub-series. One last thing. There was also a chrome hood waterfall style I suppose you'd call it; in the same colors just like the gold and cream one next to the one in this picture. No headlight.

To sum up, a model like yours, continued to be a vac shop exclusive, until 1979 at least, where the hood color went from a chrome look, to an off white like the unit with the gold bag below. This again, stayed a sub-series, and was offered alongside of the new for 1979 Brandywine ESP series units!!

You got a nice uncommon eureka There!!! Congratulations on your score!!

Chad

It should clean up nicely.

I hope the belt is all it needs. I wouldn't be surprised at the number of people who would assume the vacuum was junk because it ran rough with that on.
Very easy fix.

I like that switch on the handle.

Hey
I have a sanitairre 8667. I replaced the f@g bag with arm@hammer bag. It run me $30 full bag assembly etc. It's red and vacuum runs better with it. I bought a new viba groom brush roll cost about $20. The belts are replaced frequently on these machines. I'd replace the belt and see how she runs
It's quite nice finding all metal eureka. I prefer it over plastic shell.

Here is a fairly decent look at the brochure I spoke of before. It shows all of the Continental series machines and all of their Vacuums in fact for that year. It's a beautiful brochure and one that I am very very fortunate to have as I don't think there are too many out there that have a similar one. So enjoy everyone

I see canisters aplenty... in colors.... and abundant power nozzles, and turtle vacs.....with power nozzles.... oh boy!

Not one but three turtle vacs with pns.

Very cool catalog! You should offer vacuumland to digitize it for you and then they can provide it to members via their download shop. I found another brochure there that this vacuum appeared in too.

Hey
Sorry I didn't realize you responded. I just found it today. The eureka sanitairre was top of the line blue line model I'm told. I love Kirby's riccar and royal. I found this at a thrift store for $15. I got red bag converts to s&t bag. New brushroll either vibragroom 2 or 3. I replaced the fan and gave her a new belt. It's like a humm vee. I like the suction area is quite large. It does rip threads of carpets quite easily. I done preliminary tests and it had more suction than my sentria. I may have done the test wrong but I actually really surprised with it. I like it because it deep cleans. Ya hopefully I uploaded pic you mentioned.

I was wondering if you still had this machine. I see one on eBay for $180 but offered to me for $155.
There is a widepath metal upright in classifieds near me for $125.

I really like the chrome hood.
How do you like it. How well does it clean?

I haven't got a belt for it yet so I haven't really used it - but I imagine it's just like all the other Eurekas and Convertibles of this type.

For me - I personally never pay over $50 for a vacuum on eBay. I try to get them in real life where I can. If it's something I know I'd never see in my city, I'll buy it online.

I haven't been finding any vacuums at thrift stores lately sadly.

Somehow,

I missed this thread back when posted. I'd say you really got "schooled" with a lot of great information. From my experience the belts on these and Hoovers from the same time frame don't last as long as a flat belt, but they cost less anyway. Here's my budget tip for the day lol: when a belt on my Hoover starts to stretch I just save it for one of my Eureka's which takes a larger size belt. Of course if it's started to show cracking I pitch it. I've seen people vacuuming and you can clearly hear that the roller has stopped revolving and they're still pushing that machine back and forth, back and forth. Can't fix stupid! That chrome hood will shine like a new penny when you get around to polishing it. Nice addition!

Thanks for the reply. I think the chrome hood is awesome.
I only buy mine from thrift stores or cheap.
I only mentioned what's available but no way I'm buying them.
I imagine the belt on mine is different as it's different impellor. I got sanitaire brand belts and they actually last longer than eureka belts.
I have Hoover belts but there for my 913.
I'll reread the thread.
Hers to getting a belt for it.
I used my sanitaire today and it did entire upstairs. I turned off vacuum to adjust the height. I double clicked handle release and it went completely flat.
It deep cleaned great. The ST HEPA bag setup kept machine sealed.
I checked the belt and it was good. I believe adjusting height while vacuum is on is what ruins the belts.
Les

I think the Sanitaire uses a different pulley on the motor shaft than the domestic ones but I am not sure. The thing that kills the belts on these is just picking up large hard debris. The belt is not protected from the dirt you are vacuuming up and anything that goes into the bacuum and hits the belt on the way up, it usually nicks the belt.

You're right,

I think the pulleys are beefier on Sanitaires. Is the 3 amp motor the one they refer to as a blender motor?

Chrome Continentals & Classic

Besides the full-featured chrome Continental hood Model-Type 2364-A that began this thread were two more chrome Continental hooded vacs: the economy Model-Type 2314-A (attached photos from CL) with a 6-way Dial-A-Nap sans headlight and the Model-Type 2324-A with a 6-way Dial-A-Nap and headlight (attached 1978 advertisement). The chrome line also included the Model-Type 1444-A classic hooded vac (shown in Chad's brochure in reply #21).

There was also a bronze-colored Continental hooded series, Model-Types 2210-A & 2250-A (and presumably a third trim; attached 1977 & 1979 advertisements), with white brocade design bag jackets, possibly a 1400 series mate like the chrome series included, and at least one white-hooded Continental, Model-Type 2240-A, equipped with a blue kaleidoscope bag jacket, headlight, Rugulator & a VGII that matched the hood color & bag jackets of the Model-Types 1448-A & 1458-A (attached 1980 advertisement).

It seems that each had the same 3.5-amp motor.

I have been unable to find models 2236 & 2263 (listed in parts descriptions). It may be that they were limited editions or department store exclusives.

So Eureka produced 4 different-colored Continental-styled lines—between 10 and 12 model-types excluding private labels such as the Compact—from 1976 to c.1980: Wild Moss & Chrome (both launched in 1976), Bronze (launched in 1977), & White (launched in 1978).

Incidentally, it appears that the chrome Continental line was the last of Eureka's household F & G model hoods to be plated; the first being the Model 260 c.1961.

(Note the reflection in photo 3 that gives the impression of two dials. I did a double-take.)

I used to rebuild Sanitaires at the hotel I worked at, and every machine has that groove or melted spot on them, I didn't realize that style housing was used back in the 70s though, very simple and reliable machines for the most part, the only one I still have around is "the boss" all plastic model for home use. Not 100% but id imagine sanitaire parts from their commercial line might still work in these, you should still be able to go through sanitaire for parts if needed too

the ones I serviced were the SC887 I believe

Great vacs!
I hope by now that you have flipped the brush roll 180 degrees! The shorter end of brush patter on brush roll goes with shorter opening of base plate. That way the belt is protected more by the rug guard on base plate.
