Today, it is exactly 100 years since J.M Spangler was granted the patent for his 'Carpet Sweeper and Cleaner' on June 2nd, 1908
Here's the earliest ad in my collection, from 1907:

And one of the earliest Model Os:

Painted black, with a bright red sateen bag, which contained an inner bag of cheesecloth. This was soon changed to the more familiar blue/grey-with-red-decalomania, because housewives found the black and red version too intimidating!

I don't know if I would call the Hoover "O" pictured a "little machine"!

The only Model O I've seen in person:

And even with half of it cut away, was still really heavy!

In 1909...

there was the Senior - the front wheels were moved from beside the suction opening to behind it, so the cleaner could lift the carpet and gently beat against it to remove the trodden-in grit. The first cleaner ever to do this!

And in 1910...

There was this machine...I don't know for sure which model this is - it could be a Model 2...

In 1911...

This machine is beginning to look a lot more like the later Hoovers...note smaller bag attached to chassis with bag ring. At this point, the bags were still being hand-sewn by J.M. Spangler's wife and daughter!

Happy birthday Hoover ! o/

Jack,
Perfect thread to keep my mind occupied whilst at work today
With any luck, given the fact that my cheque has cleared, and the date it cleared, I hope that the U4082 arrives today as a perfect accompanyment to the Centenary celebrations
I hope MyVacRock realises that he has in his posession a machine which has been through the hands of the creator himself or at least his family. What a lucky guy
I am looking forward to your gig on THE ONE show Jack, is it tonight
I hope all is well with the rest of Vacuumland, and that we can all look forward (albeit a little sceptical) towards another 100 years of Hoover
Happy HOOVERing Guys and Gals
Clark.

Hi Clark,

no, sadly my 'The One Show' appearance will not coincide with the 100th Anniversary itself. The date I've been given is Thursday 19th June. There is a small possibility that this may change, but if it does, I'll let you know.

I am a little disturbed by your photo shop skills. Living here, we are all holding our breath waiting to see what will become of the building. The letters as you can see are still there, but this town is still a Hoover town through and through. I took it a little personal since it hits very close to home with me. I almost got in the car and drove over to see if it was true! I just hope none of the Hoover retirees see this photo posted anywhere. Let's try to focus on the positives

I almost got in the car and drove over to see if it was true! I just hope none of the Hoover retirees see this photo posted anywhere. Let's try to focus on the positives! The Hoover Plant closure IS a sad, tragic situation. My "revisionist artwork," jarring that it is, is meant as SOCIAL COMMENTARY, not as something humorous or silly. Nothing about it indicates a light-hearted take on the grave situation. And nothing about it detracts from the tragedy of the closure
Can you not see that
I'd say the fact that someone living, what, 1500 miles away gives a damn about it is focusing on a positive. Suppose I didn't care? How would you feel about that
Frankly, I am a bit disturbed at those who apparently feel that I should be "talked to" and that my art should be censored for the message it conveys. This sort of self-serving censorship runs against the grain of the constitutional rights that we as Americans hold dear; indeed, that we take for granted
Censor my art, and what else will you deign to censor? The next piece of art [or writing] that offends your hair-trigger sensibilities
I think you who are protesting this art really need to take in a bigger perspective on it

um... 'scuse me just a minute

Your comments are valid and noted, HOWEVER for myself, I was very offended by your "art"
Hair trigger sensibilities my A**... what you did with that picture was tacky, and posting it on this thread is about equal to pissing on it.
How about you own responsibility for your actions, instead of making other's reactions to your insensitive behavior the issue
This is my last post on this thread.

Well, Jeff, I guess you can have the right to be "offended," so long as I can have the right to "offend" you
But frankly I think you and others are over-reacting. In the extreme. I am QUITE baffled and dismayed over all this. I meant nothing offensive by it. And I believe any reasonable person would see that
Hoover was a company. It was not a religion. (Or was it??) The Hoover plant was a building. It was closed. That was a very sad and tragic end to a once-glorious company. I expressed my own personal sadness in a unique, thoughtful way
It's not like I have desecrated the Holy of Holies. (Or is it?
All I can say is, you guys certainly are easily offended
Frankly, I am surprised (and a bit offended) by your reactions to something I posted with good intentions, trying in my own artistic way to commiserate with the sadness people are feeling
How about, "Gee, C-R, it's nice to know that people care about this." (Believe me, there are a lot of people, even amongst us collectors, who do not care

Since Jeff isn't posting on this thread any longer....I decided to take his place
Charles
You certainly do have the right to "offend" anyone you wish. But you DO NOT have the right to get away with it. Many people here wouldn't call you on things that you say....or more so.....HOW you say them. But I will
I don't really think that its the fact that you posted the picture! Its HOW you come off about it. You ALWAYS get your say and your little digs in one way or another. EXAMPLE...."And I believe any reasonable person would see that." We don't all think alike or act alike. This is what makes the world go around. I realize that you can't help being who you are (see i can do it too) just like the rest of us can't help who we are or how we feel
"Overreacting"......yes I think a bit......but look who it is coming from......the person who "knows everything and always has a smart comment" whether you know it or not a lot of people feel this way. Since nobody else will tell you....I WILL
You stated that people amongst us collectors don't care.....but they aren't the ones that are posting the pics....did you just want to get noticed??
and btw...........you aren't the ONLY one with photoshop skills......(i could say something really mean right now but i will refrain) this is NOT a personal attack on you. maybe you've never been told these things before and it is time you knew how others view you
have a good day

I have a few questions about the photo's????

Ann Haines years ago during much of the 1980's was wonderful enough to send me about 40 or so B&W from the Historical Center some of which were shown so graciously by Tom A.
She also sent me a historical (time period current)soft cover book of the Hoover Companies History around 1985-86 area or so that listed off many models of Hoover's kind of like Maytag did around 1987 or so commemorating their 80th? anniversary
A couple of things about the pictures....Please any one??
Photo# 2. Is it me, or does it appear that quite alot of dirt is escaping that model O??? LOL. Look at the lower left hand corner. And wow has anyone seen one of the earliest O's that was black with red striping???? How cool and sexy to me is that!!!!
On posts, 42370,42371,42372,42347,42375...were all ones that she sent me as well. I still have 42375, but it's in horrid shape after our dryer caught fire and water damaged things that were stored under the laundryroom. None of the machines are clearly visible, and the rest of them were damaged beyone salvation
Are these still available to purchase or ask for? I miss them dearly...and cherished them. Why were thery in storage then you might ask????? Becasue when the old early 60's HOH Maytag dryer caught fire, upstairs in the laundry/breezeway I was living in the Upper Peninsula, and had many things stored in the basement that I could not afford or just had no room to take with.
I owuld love to replace them.
Hopefully some one will see this since the post took a unfortunate turn..
Chad

I don't really think that its the fact that you posted the picture! Its HOW you come off about it. Well, I guess I could use some help here. I posted my photo with the accompanying remark "Seems kinda sad to note on this 100th birthday" in this thread, and "Sad to say, on this 100th Birthday..." in the "Thrifting in Canton" thread
What about either of those comments could cause someone to take umbrage to them? I mean, your point is that the offense taken was by how I "came off about it," right? Two of the three people who took offense posted their offense before I said anymore about it, so I have to assume that it was something in one of those statements that was the source of the offense. Sorry, but I just don't get it
You ALWAYS get your say and your little digs in one way or another. Well, I am certainly glad to know that is the case
Until now, I have really held my tongue about a lot of the postings that =I= find offensive (and there have certainly been plenty of them, some of them so offensive as to drive away long-standing VCCC members). But I have said nothing, wanting to keep this place fun and happy and not trying to make a point of going after people for crossing MY boundaries.
Because, you see, there was a time when I was freer with my criticisms and some people got rather upset about me speaking my mind, to the extent that requests were made for me to be less critical and more diplomatic in expressing my opinions about the content of some of the postings
Truly not wanting to make any waves, I sincerely decided to exercise restraint in my comments and simply disregard posts that I did not appreciate, even some of the ones that in my opinion really crossed the lines of prudence and good taste -- one way or another
However, since, despite exercising this discretion, I still am perceived as "getting in my little digs," maybe I ought to just start going at it full bore, giving people the same pieces of my mind that they are giving me now. You wanna see heads start spinning, just let me get started......
EXAMPLE...."And I believe any reasonable person would see that." We don't all think alike or act alike. This is what makes the world go around. I realize that you can't help being who you are (see i can do it too) just like the rest of us can't help who we are or how we feel. You are reeeeeeeeeeeally putting words in my mouth and thoughts in my head here. I won't even try to respond to this because it defies being responded to, so ludicrous and out of touch is it
"Overreacting"......yes I think a bit......but look who it is coming from......the person who "knows everything and always has a smart comment" whether you know it or not a lot of people feel this way. Since nobody else will tell you....I WILL.Well, I don't know who has implied that I "know everything and always have a smart comment" but it certainly was not me. I don't know what else to say than that. And if other people feel that way about the many contributions I have made to the Club and to this site, well, that can only be written off to pettiness and small-mindedness on their part and reflecting not a whit on my character
I think it's safe to say that I have written as many posts and uploaded as many photos and stories here as anyone else has (more than most people do, by a long shot -- especially those who have nothing of value to post other than stirring up contention)
It may be a bit cheeky of me to say so, but I do feel most of my content has been substantive and of interest. Anyone who would construe my giving so freely of my time and energy as my being a "know it all smart ass" must have some sort of disconnect with sound reasoning. That's really all I can say about it.
You stated that people amongst us collectors don't care.....but they aren't the ones that are posting the pics....did you just want to get noticed??No, they are the ones who are sniggering and mocking certain VCCC and Vacuumland members behind their backs. You don't think it's going on? Then you really don't KNOW what goes on behind the scenes. I am sure that even as we talk, there is much merry-making going on about the truly ridiculous over-reactions to my kindly-intended photo commentary
I guess I posted my photo as much to be noticed as you have posted your comments to be noticed.
Most people do enjoy getting attention; although I have to note that my intentions around posting my photo had nothing to do with that
I do get quite a bit of attention, sometimes way too much of it -- e.g., this ridiculous tempest in a teapot that really is spinning out of hand
and btw...........you aren't the ONLY one with photoshop skills......(i could say something really mean right now but i will refrain) this is NOT a personal attack on you. maybe you've never been told these things before and it is time you knew how others view you.No, I certainly am not "the only one with Photoshop skills." And I have never claimed to be a Photoshop Virtuoso. Particularly regarding 10-minute edits that I knock out for the purpose of contributing something to these forums. (n.b., I do hope you don't think my "offensive Hoover art" represents my finest-honed skills. I do do this for a living, you know.
That being said, it is clear that you are belittling my skills or you would not have issued such a thinly veiled insult -- more succinctly, a personal attack despite your denial that that's what it is. Otherwise, you would not have found it necessary to utter your catty comment
have a good day. You too
You know, I truly do think it's really nice how you are coming to Jeff's defense on his behalf. Very chivalrous of you. We should all be so lucky as to have such concerned and devoted partners
In conclusion, I appeal to the general readership of this Forum. PLEASE weigh in on this so I know where I stand. If you don't want to take a position publicly, then please email me off-list. I really want to know whether or not the consensus is that I stepped out of line in posting my Hoover art, and if the consensus IS such, then I will immediately post an apology and request that the offending work be removed
I leave it up to our community to decide this and until I get some indication about it, I'll say no more. I am sure I have already said more than suits most people. But I did feel the need to make at least some effort to defend myself, even when it's clear that I am only digging a deeper and deeper hole ... because certain people have made their minds up about my intentions and nothing I could say would change those people's minds.
Let me just remind everyone that I have been actively collecting vacuum cleaners for nearly 40 years -- longer than many of the members here have even been alive. I love vintage vacuum cleaners, and I love having this club and forum to share that passion with others. My contributions here may not suit some people, but what can I say. At least I am actively participating in the club and doing more than my part to keep this forum alive and interesting. Too bad more people aren't doing the same, instead of just sitting on the sidelines and picking fights with those who ARE active here -- creating issues where none exist and taking offense where none was intended.

Here we go again.

Guys and Gals
IT seems that the purpose of this thread has been forgotten in the mud slinging which once again seems to have got out of hand.
I am not about to take sides with either argument, I can see the points boths sides are making. Surely however, this would be far better taken to private email rather than aired on the forum?
Jack,
Lets take this thread further onwards and upwards, making it the celebratory commentary it was intended to be.
To the moderators.
Do you think it would be appropriate to remove the inflammatory posts, not to censor the guys feelings or what they have said, but to bring this thread back to its intended meaning
Guy's Hoover was a great company and built the BEST cleaners money could buy. Yes it is sad to see Hoover as a mere shadow of its former self, but let us celebrate that even if only in name, they have managed 100 years. I hope that fate willing, they manage another 100 and although I wont be around to celebrate it I sincerely hope happens
Let us not have meaningless falling out over something which people have either misconstrued, or has perhaps been misrepresented in the first place
As I always say, HAPPY HOOVERING GUYS AND GALS
So, Here's to Charles-Richard, Jeff, and Michael, and anyone else who is feeling put out right now. Lets put this behind us and carry on the celebrations!
Happy hoovering Vacuumland!
Clark

Back to the Hoovers-the Model "O" cutaway looks like someone converted a paddle squirrel cage fan into a vacuum-by putting a bag on the fan discharge and extending the motor-fan shaft to hold the roller brush pulley.Looks like the motor is an induction type instead of universal as on other vacuums.Don't see brushes or brushholders.Would also figure the machine could only be used on AC power due to the induction type motor-at least so it appears. And in those days BOTH types of power were available-power standards haden't been adopted.

It still amazes me how quickly they were designed to be more compact, stylish and efficient. These ads are still quite effective in selling their product.

THAT'S SUPER COOL.....FRED..
That's something i'm saving to my pictures folder for sure. We all have such wonderful things to share
About that 9? series Hoover Commercial... It seems to have a middle 30's 150 model like handgrip, and two sets of cord hooks. Is that a low prod. model? I have seen 91's, 918's and the like, but never one like that..
Im loving this...

Oh wow, guys! :D

You've been holdin' out on me! :
Tom and Fred, thank you both so much - those pictures/scans are amazing! I've spent so long trawling the internet and vacuumland achives for info on those machines! I'm just over the moon! I didn't quite wet myself, but it could have been a close call, lo
How many of those machines do the Historical Center have examples of, I wonder
One question - out of the cleaners on Fred's scans, where is the Model 3, the first commercial
Chad - the only other Hoover I've seen with double cord hooks is my 1933 commercial Model 925 (below) - I guess they must have been optional, for people who wanted extra long cords. I have a 912 like the one in Charles Richard's picture, but only has 1 set of cord hooks

Some more early adverts!

From 1910, looks like a Senior Model 2 (this is wonderful, I know what they are now :D
How I wish I could still send for 'That Little Hoover Book'!

Also from 1910...

Not sure which model this is; the 12-inch Senior 195, or the 10-inch Junior 196 perhaps:

Senior Model 2 again?

Senior 195?

When was the last time a pre-102 Hoover went on eBay? I tell you...for all of my 6 years of vacuum collecting, I have never seen more than one on eBay! Those ads, though, are amazing! Thanks for taking the time to scan them, everyone

Well Jack,
They have a Spangler, and of course a model O, and a two right after that..
here is one, maybe its model 2?

The double-hook 918 is from the HMS Queen Mary. The ship is permanently berthed in the Long Beach Harbor and there are tours of the ship which was renovated into a museum
Part of the tour includes a display of artifacts saved from the ship, and the Hoover is among them. It stands behind a plexiglass panel so it was really hard to get good photos of it. Note the European-style plug - which would seem to lend authenticity to it

Has there ever been any clue as to what type of vacuums were used on the Titanic, or her sister ships? I imagine there is some sort of record on that someplace.

Post# 42531 , Reply# 78   6/3/2008 at 20:40 (5,799 days old) by vintagehoover ()
Titanic...

Alan, I've wondered about that too; I imagine they would either be early Hoover uprights, or some sort of central-vac system. I'm sure they would have been appointed with what ever was considered to be 'the best of the best'! There must be websites or message boards for people interested in those ships - perhaps someone there would know, or have access to such records.

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for posting that picture! I'd suggest that it may be a Model 195, simply because the bag on the Model 2 attaches to the outlet differently. However, in your photo, the switch is on the left of the machine (for the user), whereas the one in Fred's diagram has its switch on the right
I'm sure there were details changed and alterations made to the machines throughout the small production runs, since they were hand-made. The staff must have found little ways of making improvements as they went along!
It's interesting how some of them seem to have been made in a small initial batch, then followed with a larger batch. I guess Hoover were 'testing the waters' to see what demand there was for each model before commiting to a large production run. It's easy to forget that they were not just selling a product, but creating market demand for a product which hadn't existed before
I've seen another picture of 2 early cleaners taken by a visitor to the Historical Center - a 1912 Hooverette Model 183, and a 1915 Baby Model 185. I've also read that there is a Model 3 on display - if anyone has a photo of that, I'd love to see it, since unless it also went by a different name/number, I'm not sure if it's included in Fred's scans.

Everyone's aired their views on that issue, and moved on. If you want to discuss it further, perhaps you could do so privately with those concerned.
Could I politely request that you let this thread continue in the spirit in which it was originally intended
Many thanks

Queen Mary Hoover

Hey Guy
Id say thats a UK model 912 for 3 reasons
1. The handle Gri
2. The bag desig
3. The guard over the headlight
As Jack said the twin cord hooks/extra long cord are a bit of a mystery- guess they could have been an extra cost option at the time?

Here are a few more-

Charles
Thanks for the reply. I know i'm not crazy and had a booklet about 12 inches wide by 13 or 14 inches long, containg the entire history of Hoover up until maybe 1987. I remember that they also sent me the full line brachure at that time, as well as all the Commercial models too
I guess I'm having an "oldtymers" moment or something. Those scans seemed awful familiar. The other scans are beautiful

thanks for all of these scans, they're very interesting
Have you noticed that on the 105(?) manual cover, the cleaner appears to be running, even though it's not plugged in?

Well, I'm a bit late getting here, but I needed to take some new pictures before I could jump in. Here are my 1920 Hoover cleaners
From left to right
Hoover Special 102 - Original Condition Except 541 Bag and newer cor
Hoover Special 102 - Very early serial number (186,566) but has many upgrades including rubber bumper (or whats left of one), new bag mount for taller bags, fan with disk, Robbins Myers rating plate removed, switch replaced, and perhaps some mods to the bottom for a detachable baseplate. The cord has also been replaced if you didn't notice. The bag is 40'sish, right
Hoover Baby 103 - Original except for cord

That's no smudge!

That's the screw-in plug, I swear! You can follow the cord up past the woman's dress and over the upper cord hook
That cleaner is running on ectoplasm or something!

Thy couldn't have possibly had photoshop...

Skills. Is what they had to make that bag look full when not plugged in.
I know that advertising has had a way of embellishing things since the beginning, and an inflated bag on a Hoover then or now surely outweighs a bag that's deflated.
Excellent stuff guys...
