I see why these models are so messy to deal with. 

 

These pictures are from someone selling theirs.  The motor head is conveniently on it's side for the pictures.

 

Can just imagine lowering the base, the inside covered in dirt and fine dust.  When mounted.... how would one even be able to see what they're doing in there? 

One can uncomfortably imagine all these parts covered in fine dust/asbestos/lead paint chips, etc. ... and having to clean them every couple of months.

(sigh)

 

But this mess could be adapted to using a bag without having to spend a lot of money on a new machine. 

By unscrewing and removing that inner metal baffle, disposing of all the loose pieces that were inside, capping the current input pipe, then cutting a hole with a jig saw in the side and installing a new Beam (or another brand) Intake kit #105243 about $6.  May need to extend the new pipe on the inside to make for easy change out.

 

Done. Ready for use with a disposable bag.
