Got back into town from traveling , wife outta town too, decided to clean up th kitchen ( granted, I was LOOKING for a reason to use a vacuum,,), ended up using Kirby Tradition ( yes it’s a metal Dan but using with Heritage II mini emptor and hepa bag) to clean up the kitchen floor, that progressed to the living room ....then, the Heritage II showed up, wanted in on th ‘action’, took care of the basement(finished one)...the it wanted to dust like th a Tradition did upstairs! Put some things away, convientenly, th Diamond Edition Kirby (2004) was just sitting there ...begging to to be used , we’ll, it ended up Doug th upstairs! Sheesh!

Have any of you guy started to clean a specific room...the. It grew.. and before long you had vacuums ‘getting things done’????? Haha

It's all about using the best tool for the job or sometimes trying a different tool (new toy) to see if it might work better.

I switch them out

Fairly often, right now a 64 General Electric U-4 and a 62 General Electric swivel top.

Definitely.

Unfortunately I don't have too much space but I've been known to use multiple machines in one cleaning session.

I got moms old C9 Compact/Anthony James vacuum going so I've been using it a lot after putting a new motor in it and lubing everything up and getting the powerhead running ok with a new belt. I think my Royal 4650 canister or my 5700 upright have more power and get edges better but the Compact is a bit smaller and easy to leave in the corner. Sometimes I break out one of the others depending on what I'm doing or my mood. The 4650 you can adjust the motor speed and powerhead height so that comes in handy and it has all the accessories on board. It's also a bit more forgiving if something gets sucked up and plugs the hose or something. The upright if that happens you have to pull the belt cover or base plate to clear it out but it has huge cheap bags and massive suction but those two are very noisy too. It is fun to just try em all out and figure what each one is best at.

I"m glad you mentioned your experience with the Royal 4650 tank vacuum. I"m really leaning towards one of those ( haven't found any for sale locally, but a vacuum store has some) as I love my metal upright Royals (4000 and 886 models). Can you get HEPA style cloth bags for that machine?

Oh Yes.

I can really get myself into extra work with my Kirby's. I do like to pull out the 516 as it is just like the first Kirby I used, a model 519. I also like to pull out the Kirby Classic and play with it as well. Both models my grandmother had. Really brings back the memories.

We still have the Classic model and still use it to clean the grandparents retirement home and now our get away destination. Some day it will be permanently in my personal collection.

My Grandmother was a brave lady to hand over a $350.00 vacuum to a 5 yr old in 1972 to entertain myself and them with. She only hand it a few days before my finger prints were all over it.

Kelton the 4650 is a true early hepa paper bag machine as far as I know and there are high quality and regular factory cheaper bags available for it. I also have a 413 Royal power tank and pretty sure it uses the same bag, just less powerful motor and a smaller not quite as good power head with out all the extras the newer 4650 has.
I don't know that the bags are actually cloth though the better quality ones seem a lot thicker and heavy duty for not too much more.
I really like my 5700 upright too as sometimes it's nice to not be dragging a canister and hose around when you just want to quickly clean the carpet and groom it nicely. Pretty sure they have high quality hepa bags too and they hold a ton before you need to change them, but you already know that having several around. I think with a later power team canister you'd have a cleaning package that can tackle any job you might have around your house, Except maybe wet spills. We have a couple of rug shampooers now that can deal with those.

I really ( surprisingly) enjoy using my colllection..rotating them. I’ve seem some people using a vacuum for a month ( this ‘vacuum of the month’ series videos ). I would rather use many more of them during that month which, means I have to maintain more of them ( thinks bags mainly) but by doing so....I get ‘variety’.....each is a little different ( age/state of tune and manufacturer ). Am I alone in this realization???

Harmonics.

While on a first date with this super cute guy during brunch yesterday and almost immediately outing myself as a Vacologist (Ooooo, I just invented that word.. and yes, you can all adopt it, as desired!), he asked if I use all of the vacuums in my collection,.. and how do I choose which one to use that day.  I answered yes, they are all in excellent working condition and I rotate often depending on my mood and craving on any given day.

I also found myself describing to him not only about the beauty and design of a particular era, and how it makes you feel to use a vintage tool.. but also how older vacuums (speaking of my Electrolux collection primarily) have larger heavier motors that emit a much lower decibel sound while operating (excluding the powerhead, of course) are a pleasure to use, with almost a white noise soothing whirr rather that a screaming shrill almost unbearable sound of our modern day plastivac supersonic tiny motors.

And even within that parameter of why I like vintage motor sound, there are still differences in motor sound between models that I often look forward to hearing while working, like a familiar song.., or an old friend talking with me.  Like today, I'm really looking forward to powering up my Model E.  Oh, and the smell of warm motor oil coming out of the exhaust... it's like a cake baking in the oven... I can't get enough of it!  (see, I ain't completenutt for nothing, boys!)

Not only can our vintage vacs run longer (over an hour, or much more) without overheating, but they allow the user to continually flow from one cleaning job, floors for example, to another, dust vacuuming or blowing, etc, without getting agitated (pardon the pun) by the off-putting noise while working.

It is an interesting phenomenon... that I do actually want to keep vacuuming longer when using a vintage vacuum with a pleasing motor and suction sound, much more that a quick touch up with a plastivac or stick vac.... it's a whole different experience based on the atmosphere created by the sound of a vacuum that can affect the efficacy and time period of cleaning that day by the user.

OK, and the date with the super cute guy went .....?

It's cool that your sharing your interests like this.  It  makes a person real.  Realness seems to be a problem, epecially for millenials who's lives revolve around FB and Instagram.

Always!!

My choice of vacuum to use for when I do cleaning is always what I am feeling at the time!! Although sometimes it ends up being the most recently added one to the collection or most recently cleaned up. I might do one area with a vacuum then in a room with multiple vacuums in it, I will choose one of those vacuums to do that room. At the end of the vacuuming session I am happy that everything looks well groomed!!

Today, I used one of the Electrolux Epic 6500s for the wood floors, which is most of the house, and I pulled out the Hoover Convertible, U4423 for the two area rugs.
Maybe I was subconsciously in a blue mood today.
The E-lux is white with blue trim, and the Hoover is blue!

Used the Royal 5700 to do the carpet in the main areas last weekend and using the Compact C9 to clean the areas the parrot likes to eat over today. Man the 5700 beast sure grooms the carpet.

What does that model look like? Just like the older 4650 canister with tools on it? I googled it but no clear pics, if you have a good photo, would you post it here?

Thx

The 5700 is a early 90s top of the line upright with the chrome wheel covers, adjustorite, foot adjuster pedals etc. I have a thread on it here with pics. I think it has the 7 amp motor 9 blade impeller. It is a beast and works well. I got lucky and found it free on Craigslist. If you find my thread pretty sure some of our experts ran down what all it's ratings and features are. It was sold by Starks here with their name on it.
