Smeg appliances are really hot right now. Am I the only one who thinks they are ass ugly? Smeg kitchen appliances are the ugliest I think I've seen. But smeg stuff is crazy expensive. I wouldn't even want one. What does everyone else think?

Lol I know. Every time I hear it I think of smegma.😂 I find vintage kitchen appliances so much prettier. I don't even think they make chrome toasters anymore. Just plastic or tacky stainless steel. Our toaster is super cheap plastic crap that's dying. When it does I'm replacing it with a vintage chrome toaster.

SMEG-if its Chinese----NO THANKS!!!For a mixer--buy the US Kitchen Aid,or the British made Kenwoods.Another thought mentioned many times here-buy VINTAGE!!!They are getting harder to find-they show up at thrift, swap shops and yard sales.

Sounds like somebody in Shanghai didn't do enough research into the name and its meaning in other languages. Kind of like when GM tried to market the Chevy Nova in Latin America without bothering to figure out that Nova could translate into Spanish at 'no go'.

I have

About every Kitchen Aid made from 1919 up until 1980, missing 2 I think, also I have a bunch of Kenwood Chefs from the 60s up to the 80s, they are all by far better than ANY new mixer!

My BF's grandma has a kenwood chef. I definitely want one of those because I need a good mixer. But even the used ones on ebay are expensive and then shipping is expensive because they are heavy. Something else on my want list. Lol.

About SMEG

The company itself is NOT Chinese. It's Italian. And the name is an acronym.

From Wikipedia:

Smeg is an Italian manufacturer of upmarket domestic appliances. Vittorio Bertazzoni founded the company in 1948 in the town of Guastalla, Reggio Emilia, Italy. The name is an acronym for Smalterie Metallurgiche Emiliane Guastalla ("Emilian metallurgical enamel works of Guastalla"

Incidentally, the "Nova/No Go" story has been disproved:

Re Italian

That was the reason I looked at them at Williams Sonoma, on the bottom of the blender it does say, Made in China.

I looked at them in Williams Sonoma and I like the retro look.I would buy it.Let's face it; what isn't made in China or has China parts in our product's.I saw this product when I was visiting Italy, they have been around for a while.

I am using

A late 50s Kenwood Chef and a 53 General Mills mixer right now, and a 54 portable Oster, a Osterizer blender from 55, and on and on, I really have no use for anything new.

You're right. When there are tons of decent used appliances that can be had for pennies, it makes little sense to consider buying anything new like mixers, coffee pots, toasters, etc. Granted, some folks have to find that "made in china" matching stainless steel shell covered plastic toaster to match the dishwasher they already have :)

Inspiring colors?

gregvacs28's profile picture
It's not much, but they do offer refrigerators in Sherwood green, pastel blue, and a pastel pink. I don't know that I would buy one of their round cornered frigs but it's inspiring to see them in non-typical colors. The name though....

Am I the only one who watches 'Red Dwarf'?

human's profile picture
Every time I see that name, I can't help but think of the British sci-fi show 'Red Dwarf', in which the characters are constantly calling each other 'smeg head'.
