Hi!

A while ago, Amazon delivered me a nice 110v - 240v transformer instead of the plastic box I actually ordered. Of course, me being the dishonest chap I am, I sat on this for 2 weeks until I heard nothing, and then started dreaming about maybe getting an american vacuum! I didn't really have ANY idea what I actually wanted though.

Anyway, another collector who we all know, IBIASAIC got wind of this, and bought me one of my choices! I am due to refurbish a few of his collection pieces for him this winter, and as money isn't everything in my world, the payment is this! Many thanks Roger! It arrived on friday, and I was a good boy and kept it until today to unbox so I could film it for my youtube channel and have a proper reaction.

This is the american vacuum that stuck out in my head when I thought. This is what I used to like the most when I was a little boy interested in vacuums, in the early days of the internet, the Hooverland yahoo group, google image search etc.

It's fab! Roger has done a video too, mainly because he had to unbox it to check it arrived OK from the US, incase he had to do an ebay claim etc, and because he bought it, he was more than entitled to do a video of it, and this also gave mt the tip off that it did indeed work fine, so I didn't have that fear to worry about.

It has (thanks Doug) the toolkit from an Electrolux XXX. I didn't really know this when I shared the link that got it bought, and to be honest I'm not too fussed. I chose it because it DIDN'T have the power hose and head, mainly because they seem more expensive, and we have hard flooring in our house, so straight suction is much easier to use! That's also why I wanted a machine with wheels and not skids. It has 2 hoses, not quite sure why, or what the other hose is for, and a few duplicate tools.

But it works very well! It's so quiet and smooth! Cord reel works fine, although is possibly a little slow, but I have nothing to benchmark it against, so will leave it alone for now... Need to source some bags for it, but I have a plan there.

So here we are, my little piece of America in the United Kingdom! I'll be trawling the archives looking for disassembly tips and hints as the suction doesn't seem fab. I've used many 500w UK electroluxes and I don't think the suction is all there, but that should be simple. Also I'll want to give it a full refurb and cleanup in time, and get the metal polished, hopefully I can take a trip up to see HooverLux and we can do it together.

Anyway, enough waffle, here she is!

Boy does that look almost mint!  I love my two Gs, one in teal and another in brown/beige.  They have great suction for an older machine and are easy to pull around and use for over an hour without overheating!

Try these HEPA cloth bags, they work very well and fit perfectly!

Also, as a good friend mentioned to me, it's fun to use the original hose that matches color, but if you really want to enjoy the machines performance while cleaning, then get a new vinyl hose that will fit the G.  They're not too hard to find on-line, usually new.  Some will have the pig-tail electric connector which is what you want if you're going to be using the power nozzle, or just get a non-electric capable version if you don't intend to find a power nozzle for her someday.

Enjoy.. I know you will.

Bill

Very cool! I have one in a lot worse shape, but still runs! They do have a quiet soft sound to them. I really love those dusting brushes, very cool, I need to find one of them too.

I agree with Bill, if you plan to use it daily or often enough, you will want a vinyl hose. It looks ugly, sure, but it will save your original hose from breaking apart, and the original hose is not flexible at all and very stiff and cumbersome. People have a lot more furniture and packed homes now than in the 1950's, so having a stiff hose that you need 4 or 5 feet to maneuver around isn't very practical today. Maybe you could be able to paint the hose to match the G, not sure if anyone has tried that before, I know rubber is difficult to paint.

Ah I didn't realise the box was from an XXX either! So basically I have the Automatic G unit, and XXX everything else. Maybe I should get a unit only XXX...

I have 2 hoses, not sure why as both seem to work OK. One is the XXX hose, one has a plastic hand grip, grey in colour (ill get a proper photo). It won't see too much use, certainly not for now but I can use the more modern woven hose without worrying too much about damaging it, plus finding/importing a vinyl hose might cost a bit!

Going to look at fitting a hepaflo bag to it, should be quite simple, then open it up and see what the internal seals are like as the suction is a bit lacklustre...

I had another play with this today and filmed it being converted to a bag that isnt meant for it, and also confirmed that both hoses aren't great.

Luckily another collector pointed me towards an adapter that will allow me to fit a normal crushproof hose, which is fine by me and will make it very useable! That should change the way it works when it arrives, and I can use it properly!

I've boxed it back up safely for now, got 5 other vacuums to refurbish for other people now, space is a bit limited!
