I went to three estate sales and brought home two vacuums: a stunning Eureka Vanguard, and an equally stunning Kirby Classic. I also received a lovely Eureka Carpet Beautifier in the mail.

The Vanguard was all of $2. I do not know anything about this vacuum, I did not even know they existed. It looks great and works great. I am in love with the cord winder and the power switch on the handle. The bag appears to say "triple filler".

The Kirby is in amazing shape and appears to have been used very little. It came with a box of accessories, all of which appear never used. One of them was still tightly wrapped in tissue paper from the factory. I had two classics at one point and sold them both. I did not intend to get another one, but this one looked so beautiful I could not pass it up.

The Carpet Beautifier is very neat. I thought from the pictures on ebay that the bottom would be a lightweight plastic, but it is metal. Very heavy, built like a tank. I tested it out on some linoleum and it works perfectly. I am a bit leary about using it on carpet, though. I have some carpet shampoo made by Kirby. The instructions say to shampoo the carpet, let it dry, then vacuum. How is this supposed to work? Won't it just turn the dirt into mud, which will then dry back into the carpet fibers?

3 great machines--

--that all look amazing!
A Kirby is always one of the best of any period.
That Eureka is one of the best ever and most deluxe of many quality models.
The 3rd brush on the Electrolux B-8 makes it the best and easiest shampooer/polisher.If you have the complete B-8 outfit(shampoo tank & splash guard are in pic.Other parts are soft shampoo brushes, suds shield, pan to rest on when not in use, stiff bristle hard floor brushes, scrubbing & buffing pads)always use the suds shield when shampooing and NEVER with hard floor brushes. The foam shampoo as used by current Aerus/Electrolux and Kirby will clean a carpet.
I have MANY hoses, attachments, boxes, etc for 60s-70s Kirbys as well as deluxe plastic att caddy for Vanquard but you should be able to find nearby if wanted.

Pam,

That is cool you found another Kirby Classic 1CR, and this one having its original factory cloth bag! Even the attachments are flawless (I still see the spare belt around the duster brush)!

I just got another Kirby myself recently: a 1979 Tradition 3CB! This one has both its original metal fan and shake-out bag! It came from my trade with Jared (huskysteel), for whom I gave the incomplete 1971 Kirby Classic to.

What is the difference between the splash guard and the suds sheild? This unit has 3 black bristle brushes. Are those the hard floor brushes?

It did come with a pan to rest in, but not pictured.

The eureka has awesome delux features, but it seems to be my weakest vacuum when it comes to suction. The motor is something like 3 amps. All of my other uprights have at least a 6 amp motor.

Suds shield snaps in place on the underside of the machine. There's a little opening in the middle of the bottom plate you snap it into. Splash guard goes around the outside of the machine. Yours might be marked as to "rear." Splash guard means splash guard. If you have black brushes that seem soft, they're the shampoo brushes. Look in the VL library for an instruction manual.

your Vanguard is from the 60's and vacuums motors weren't as hi powered as today. Most machines were between 3 and 5 amp. Kirby's were 4 amps! But don't think they didn't clean! They did!!

Oh! The pan is designed for the machine to rest in when you have the carpet brushes in, so they don't get crushed. You've got something special there!

Pam,

I agree with Greg: your Vanguard would be a 1968-74 model, probably a '72. It is probably a model 2080 or 2092.

I think I remember it saying 2081 on the bottom. I will check when I get home.

The model number on the Vanguard is 2081 B.

Here is a picture of one of the brushes from the Electrolux. Is this the carpet brush?

Congrats!

On the elusive Vanguard. There were two model numbers for that machine, 2080 Which was for the painted hood, and 2081 for the chrome hood. The Vangaurd was introduced in 1969, and ended in 1972. Yours should be dated under the base, there should be a little circle with the last two digits of the year in it. If the two numbers are "70" for instance, that means it is from 1970.

I love your orange Formica counters, dark cabinets and stove!

seijun,

Good information from luxflairguy. The hard floor parts were often optional. As trends in flooring changed the 3 brush Electrolux went from polisher only in the 50s to mostly shampoo use only by the 80s.The shampoo tank hose should be placed in slot in back of tank when not in use.

Pam,

I would guess your Vanguard was made in 1971.

So what is meant by "triple filter" on the Vanguard's cloth bag? Air is filtered through the paper bag and through the cloth outer bag. Is there a third filter somewhere?

Post# 397612 , Reply# 20   9/1/2018 at 05:49 (2,056 days old) by TheSpiritOf76 ()
acutally....

Eureka paper bags were alot different then they are now. There were 2, rather thick layers. You might also notice the inside of the bag is lined with with a filter like material fused to the other side of the fabric, hence being triple filter.

Pam,

Your 2081B was apparently built in January 1972.

I have been using it and the carpet beautifier to clean my kitchen today. I had $100 to spend on either a new low end plastic steam cleaner, or a vintage shapooer. I absolutely made the right choice.
