Scouring Craigslist pays off...haha I found a brand new Kenmore Whispertone 5.1 for $15.00. Just picked up tonight on my way home from work...
I had one of these years ago and loved it but sold it. So excited. Here it is sitting in my dining room...even had the powermate jr. which is also new... Thought I would share my news...

That is an awesome machine/find! That whole line of Kenmore by Panasonic were great vacuums. I bought the 4.5 new in '88 I think, still in my rotation of vacs and looks/runs like new! You found the cream of the crop there buddy! |

I think that's from 91-92? Pretty sure it's in my Sears catalog for one of those years. My aunt said she bought that model at Sears back then, and she may even be using it still.
I found a black version of that at a thrift store here a few years ago. It was in great shape and I would have liked to get it, but I already had too many Kenmore canisters. I think the black one is in my 1993 Sears catalog. |

That does look like a great find!! I was wondering... I had a newer Kenmore canister powermate vac that I recently sold on Facebook because although I liked using it, I did not like the fact that either the bags were leaking dust or they would explode from what I would guess would be too much suction. My Mom's classic Kenmore canister was white and I think it was like a 5.3 with variable speed control and her bags would explode, that's why she got rid of it... Has anyone else ever had this problem?

Robert, there are a few reasons the Kenmore bags can leak or burst.
First off, were you using generic paper bags? Sometimes, with generic paper bags, the quality isn't the greatest, & they can burst if they are overfilled or used to pick up lots of fine dust & dirt. As for the genuine bags, if you were using the white genuine Kenmore 5055 bags they made back in the 80's & 90's, those were only 1 ply paper bags, very thin & had no microfiltration lining like the yellow paper bags do. Also, the yellow paper bags with the microfiltration lining, whether generic or genuine, they do leak a LOT of dust through the bag material itself, & they will burst if used to pick up fine dust, dirt or ashes because the paper becomes clogged with dust & the air is trying to escape. So part of the problem might be the type of dirt that exists in your home the vacuum is picking up. To solve that problem, I would use the HEPA Cloth 5055 bags, either generic or genuine. Those bags will not burst, as the material is much stronger than paper, & they don't leak dust. As for the leakage around the collar, that happens because the bag collar can slide up slightly in the bag holder, so not all the dirt enters the hole in the bag collar & enters the bag compartment instead. When you look at how the hose enters the vacuum, you will see that the hose & bag door only touches the foam seal on the bag holder. Most other vacuums have a tube on the bag door or on the hose that goes right into the hole on the bag collar, so all the dirt goes directly into the bag. The only solution to this is to tape the bag collar to the bag holder so it cannot slide up & cause a issue. Rob |

David - You are right, I have noticed with some generic brands the cardboard bag collar isn't constructed quite as well as the genuine Kenmore/Panasonic bags. But, since I tape the collar onto the bag holder, it doesn't make a difference because it the collar cannot slide up or bend away from the bag holder once it's taped in.

I heard a trick shared of putting a toilet paper tube into the bag opening, then close the lid and put the hose in place. This is supposed to force the dust into the bag and prevent leaking around the collar/hose connection.
I've never tried it so I don't know if it works. Maybe someone can try it and let us know. |
