Exactly 4 months ago today, my Fantom Fury, which I bought refurbished from electroluxxxx here on Vacuumland, bit the dust (pun intended). I took it apart, and found out that somehow, the motor died.

So last month, I sent the motor to Mike for repairs. He couldn't find out exactly what was wrong with the motor, but he hooked it up directly to electricity and managed to get it working again!

I got the motor back today, and I had trouble getting it installed in my Fury. So we got on FaceTime, and with Mike's assistance, I got the motor installed correctly. Afterward, I put the vacuum back together, plugged it in and, lo and behold, it's revived! I've haven't run it to see how well it works, though.

Electroluxxxx, I owe you a very sincere thank you for repairing the motor, as well as teaching me how to install the motor correctly! Without you or Vacuumland, this would not have been possible. If it wasn't for Vacuumland, I wouldn't have this vacuum in my possession. Thank you, everybody!

The ugly truth

I tried taking the Fantom for a spin around the house. It seemed to work beautifully, devouring everything in its path. After about 5 minutes of cleaning, the vacuum cut out! Somehow, the motor overheated quickly. I also smelled an electrical burning smell. So I let the vacuum cool down. Once it cooled down, I pressed the reset button and tried vacuuming a rug. The Fury cut out after 2 1/2 minutes.

Later, I took the machine apart and got on FaceTime with electroluxxxx. He had me run the vacuum without the motor cover on. I held the motor in place with one hand, then used the other hand to turn on the vacuum. Turns out, it was arcing! Blue sparks were shooting out of the commutator. No wonder the vacuum was overheating and cutting out so quickly!

The solution? Fortunately, Mike has a spare motor that he's going to send me; I just have to pay the shipping. It's a used motor that came out of another Fury that he had. Hopefully, I won't have any more issues with my Fantom once I get that other motor!

Here is a pic of the bad motor.

I made a video of the motor arcing. Warning: it's loud.
