Hey everyone, this is FantomVacuumFan. I have not been on here in a while and couldn't log into my old account for some reason, so I had to make a new one. I picked up a Westinghouse Wired Deluxe (very similar to the Fantom Crosswind 600 XL) The vacuum is in excellent condition, however, I was wondering if the pre-filter on the top of the bin is washable. The filter appears to be made of a combo of metal mesh and a pleated paper like material. Since I don't have a spare filter, and would be surprised if they are available still, I don't want to wash it unless I know for sure that it is safe. Can anyone help me? Does anyone have a manual for the Westinghouse? I am attaching a few pics below. Thanks in advance!

Does it say anywhere on the vacuum that the filters are washable? In the meantime you can vacuum them out as good as you can with another vacuum.

Hey there...

I might have to do some internet digging. If I am not mistaken, they had a downloadable PDF version of the manual for this online, as well as the other “Fury/Wired” model.

First off, welcome back.

Sadly, I won’t be able to help you figure out whether or not that filter is washable because I have never owned one of these. Hopefully someone here will be able to help you. I’m curious, myself.

Thanks for sharing your Westinghouse with us! As a Fantom vacuum enthusiast myself, I can really appreciate its rarity. Those cleaners are incredibly hard to come by. I like seeing all the Cyclone XT attachments in blue, too.

I find it very interesting that Westinghouse actually made at least one change to the design of that cleaner, deviating from Fantom’s design. Clearly, that pre-motor filter is different from that of the Fantom Crosswind 600XL, whose filter has the same footprint as that of the Cyclone XT. I realized this after watching FantomFan’s video below (great video, btw!). See the 1:20 mark.

Incidentally, I recently found one of my dream machines, a Fantom Cyclone XT, and a flawless one nonetheless!

Try this...

I know the filter is pretty dirty, but before you try washing it you can try to use compressed air (outside of course) to clean out some of the dust.

The link below is the manual for the Westinghouse Wired Special Edition (Fury look alike), and on page 12 it does say that the collection bin filter is washable, and it does look slightly similar to the one in this machine, so it in fact may be washable. Hope this helps!
Nick

No, sadly it doesn't. However, the most of the Fantoms, which the Westinghouses are based on, had washable prefilters. However, the Westinghouse Prefilter is different from the Fantom versions, hence why I am not sure. I plan on either using another vacuum to vacuum the filter off, or an air compressor to blow the filter out, however, due to the metal mesh, I am not sure how effective vacuuming will be. Thinking, if I can't wash it, the air compressor might be my best bet.

I once had a Westinghouse Unplugged. The premotor filter was similar and it was washable. Be sure you're able to let it dry in the sun immediately after washing so it doesn't end up taking too long to dry, it'll grow mold if it can't dry properly.

Is the instruction booklet that I sent a link to similar to how the XT lookalike is with the filter? It did say that the Fury version's filter was washable and it does look pretty similar in the photo of your filter.
