I recently inherited a Hoover Convertible model U 4171.It is low end model one speed no grip, half bumper, short cord, but it works great! I would like to get a tool set for it. What number tool set does this take? It is the front conversion It is only 4.3 motor, but it lifts the carpet right off the floor. Gave away an Oreck which just seemed to pick up surface dirt. There was never anything in the bag!

Hi,

I think any of the pan converter tool sets should work with that model. Since it was a BOL, it probably would sell with the short set that included a hose, one wand, crevice tool and the furniture brush which was a combo dusting and upholstery tool.

I see it's a plastic base machine so my guess is the tool set is all white instead of taupe or greige, and might have a plastic wand instead of the metal one. It could have the plastic hose end with ring lock instead of aluminum but someone who knows more than I do can confirm or deny on that.

There are often tool sets on eBay complete with box for relatively inexpensive, so you might find what you're looking for once someone gives a number for the correct set.

That's a nice looking machine. As a kid I found the orange hood plastic base Convertible in the trash, whatever model, good shape, I wished I kept it, but I was too afraid to plug it in. Now I never see them.

Hi,

According to the 1982 updated Convertible owners manual the U4171's tool set would have been ...

(Model U4901) The Standard 5-piece Set, that included: 1) lightweight hose 2) converter *3) wand 4) crevice tool 5) multi-purpose brush

*Earlier sets have a curved wand, and later ones have a straight wand.

or

(Model U4903) The Deluxe 7-piece Set, that comprised: 1) vinyl hose 2) converter 3) wands 4) dusting brush 5) furniture nozzle 6) wall/floor brush 7) crevice tool

(Earlier cartons marked "Fits Hoover Convertible Cleaners with Front Conversion";
Later cartons marked "Fits Decade 80, All Convertible Cleaners with Front Conversion")

P.S.

Just read fan-of-fans comment regarding tool colors and materials. Here are my observations:

The tool colors went from white in the early- to mid-1960s, then seal greige in the mid- to late-1960s, then taupe in the late-1960s to early-1970s; then back to white in the early-1970s to early-1990s.

The curved wands in the earlier U4901 sets are aluminum, and the straight wands in the later ones are plastic.

hoover tools

Thank you so much for the help. Not sure if I should get them as they most likely won't work very well. I have an old Filter Queen with fantastic suction. but it is very heavy and clumsy to use. I have a Kirby too, but putting on the hose is very tough since I had a couple of surgeries. I thought maybe the lightweight tools would be good for when I don't want to haul the heavy duty machines.

The suction with the attachments like any pan converter set won't be very strong but it would be fine for light dusting of furniture of floors.

I'd probably get a set if I had one just for fun and for posterity. They are common on eBay with box, etc.

Hoover tools

Just received my Hoover tool set. Hooked them up and did my living room furniture.I must say they worked better then I expected. Very well made ,long hose, steel wand, sturdy tools. The suction is not like my Kirby or Filter Queen but, for a 1 speed upright it does quite well. I remember my Parent's model 1020 Convertible with the rear converter and it had very little suction through the hose. They went out and bought a GE swivel top for above the floor cleaning.

I had a Eureka ESP with the pan to do the cobwebs and stuff around the basement, and it is virtually the same as Hoover's toolkit. I always remembered it doing a great job and did the stairs and baseboards with it and everything. They have foam gaskets around the top (or bottom?) where it connects to the bottom plate of the vacuum, make sure those are in good shape so it gets a good seal.

Paul, do you know what attachment set the Hoover Convertible U4127 takes? Would it be the same kit?

Huskyvacs,

Yes, the tool set model options were the same for the U4127.

The specs sheet below, originally posted by constellation86, confirms it.

Fyi, I did an online search for the manual and found this 1982 updated version of the original 1972 one; posted as one for the U4345. It shows the tool set options sans the model #s:

Since c. 1966 Hoover has published multi-model manuals.
