I was looking for a handvacs to replace my shark pet perfect (Good suction horrible quality) and came across the Ultra which appears to be a cheaped Royal Prince or Kirby Hachette.

Anyways it's on sale and I was wondering if it's worth picking up. I'm not going to heavly use it i just need for quick pick up and my cat's litter mat.

It's loud and it doesn't clean well. Would not recommend. You should just get an original Dirt Devil Hand Vac from the 90s. They're always at thrift stores.

Agreed. Original is better. I remember my parents owned one and they had to wear ear protection when they were using it. The Hoover brush vac is also a good choice.

I had one of these briefly. My dog found it and shredded the cord when he was a puppy. Bits of paper and rubber and copper strands all over the floor.

Why not try the Eureka Easy Clean hand vac? Though it’s bagless, it has a hose and a nifty way to wrap it’s long cord:

Hey

The late 80s early 90s dirt devil vacuums are garbage. My royal 501 prince my doublas bee and kirby vacuette are light years better. I have a 1930 pa geier handvac that is alot better. I also found dirt devil im providing a link to. It has alot of power. I don't mean to bash others opinions but the dirt devils dont suck.
I used new dirt devil on low pile stairs that are purple nylon carpet. I usually use my sentria with zipp attachment. I used this vac and if i closed my eyes it felt like a kirby. I also vacuum by the cat box and it made shortt work. Imagine the 90s dirt devils on horse steroids. It is a little pricey but it's worth it.

I really wish they still made more hand vacs like this. I like the idea of it being bagged.
Anyways I might get it just because it's on sale just to have it (I like the way it looks) and get a better one too.

But really guys. I appreciate your input!

The Dirt Devil Ultra is actually a decent cleaner; it's actually the cheap single-layer Dirt Devil Type G paper bags that choke the machine terribly.

I am not exaggerating when I say that the machine's power is almost instantly sapped by these bags as soon as you start cleaning. Case in point: I put a fresh, genuine bag in my Ultra and cleaned TWO of the carpeted steps in my flight of stairs and the cleaner had already lost about half of its suction. I do not have particularly dirty stairs; the bags are just that bad.

If you can come up with an alternative to the cheap-o paper bags, I think you will be happy with the cleaner.

I have one of these-it works well has a handheld----FORGET the hose and attachments-not enough suction to make them useable.A shutter closes the nozzle on the bottom. However enough air leakage makes it so the hose won't work.I thre the hose out-the useless hose made the machine awkward to use as a hand vacuum. The older machines where the hose was connected in the front were better!

Now that mention I found someone in the comments on Amazon who's using Kenmore cloth bags in it. It seems like a interesting project to try out.

I'm honestly surprised Royal themselves aren't selling a better version of it. They do make one of the bagless version.

I remember when these came out, wasn't it 1996 or so?

I'm assuming they don't make the bagless Classic model anymore. It looked similar to the original ones but it had a bagless cyclonic bin on the back. It had attachments but they used a pan style converter.

I wouldn't go with the Eureka either. It's very bulky and heavy. I would go with the Riccar Squire.

I never liked the Ultra, but I've always liked the way it looks so I wouldn't mind having one of these in my collection.

I went ahead and got it.

To my surprise it worked really well!
Only problem I have with it is I don't know how to properly loop the cord. Right here just wrapped it around the head and then put it in the loop.

BTW know of any better bags? I know the DD bags are single layer so if there's any multi layer bags please let me know.

I had forgotten I posted that!
I'm going to have to try that out pretty soon because it is a pretty powerful vac for it's price.

Man, I wish they'd make an Upright like their old Broomvac.

I came across one of these in my grandparents garage i guess they used it a couple times and forgot about it, it was extremely dusty and i thought for sure it was trash they just didn't throw away but i was board so i washed the bag and cleaned the machine with a couple Clorox wipes and it came out working well though the first couple of times it had a very distinct garage smell

Anyway it's not a terrible machine for what it is, generally use it on the front carpeted stairs as it's easier and lighter to use then my Kirby (though the Kirby cleans better, so i still use it from time to time) it's not a terrible choice if you have carpated stairs you need to clean quickly from time to time

My parents had a couple of these when they moved out of their house to a senior living facility three years ago. I left them behind because I already had two Royal 501's, which I love.

I was surprised that in an 90s DD catalog I saw they made an attachment set for these that you could use on the hose. Not that it has much suction, but I never knew that!

could some one cut a hepa bag to make it fit this machine that might help keep suction longer?

You would need the paper bag adaptor kit for these to start with. If you get one that can be washed or blown-out and reused, you might be able to. I think they make HEPA bags that can be, or even if they can't, just be lightly rinsed and then dried. Depending on use, it might only have to be done every few months per year, not so bad. It would have to be a custom job in any case.

Paper bag adaptor?

The ultra had the G bag tube built onto them.
Their hose suction was terrible due to design. The front of the nozzle has a cover which you rotate down to cover the brushroll chamber there was a little black door under the hose which was connected to the cover which would open when the cover was rotated. It was plastic on plastic so it really offered no seal. I never did measure the hose's performance but just going off of feeling it was pretty pitiful.

Dirt Devil Handheld

We had these in the UK and they were quite good and were really common in the 90s. They stopped selling them over hear in about 2007. Its a shame because they were decent and Corded handhelds are getting really hard to find over here now especially with a rotating brush. Next best thing is the Hoover Jovis+ corded handheld which is 49.99 and also pretty decent but its not bagged. If you could get the dirt devils over here I would buy one. I dont know why you can still get them in America though maybe they are more popular with you guys. I miss them.

I recently found the 3 best hand vacuums.
Riccar squire (7amp). Dirt devil ultra platinum edition,Iona formerly Regina vacuums, Iona dirt raider.
The are awesome. I'd recommend purple shark cordless it's really good.
The new dirt devil 2 I believe has power but it doesn't pick up it flings across the carpet.

On top of what I have mentioned I have a pa geier 1930 hand vac, a 1930s premier hand vac, 2 or 3 2950s royals. I think one may be electro hygiene. I have about 3-5 80s eArly 90s dirt devil, the one mentioned in the thread, platinum royal, a Douglas busy bee in original box it's sister vacuum to Kirby vacuette, the Craftsman hand vac similar to Kirby, 2 eureka hand vacs.
They all do a good job but Iona dirt raider, riccar and royal platinum take the cake.
I also have eureka Corvette hand vac.
What's cool is nice hand vacs don't kill you with price and don't take up much space.
Les

I like the Regina Dirt Magnet

kloveland's profile picture
and the first Electrolux hand vac which was also the same thing. They are very powerful but flimsy. The bag could have also been thicker. Both models have an aggressive brush roll. The original Royal and Dirt Devil 2 amp models barely have any power. But work for certain things. The ultra that I had was very loud and barely had any tool suction. Which was probably due to the plastic on plastic mentioned above.

I've been using my 2 Royal Prince 501's and my Dirt Devil hand vacs....found them all working nicely....aka not scattering small or larger pieces of 'stuff'. I mostly use these on microfiber covered sofa and love seats.
